Babe Ruth Threw Out the First Ball
Beginnings: Irish Thomas Dongan, appointed New York's royal governor by King James II in 1682, was so popular a change from his predecessors that the Towns of Hempstead and Flushing decided to give him 900 acres in what is now the North New Hyde Park area for a summer home. Dongan built a mansion on what is now Lakeville Road in 1688, but didn't have long to enjoy it. James was toppled by anti-Catholic forces, and Dongan fled to New England and then to Ireland in 1691. The Name: In 1715, Dongan Manor was sold to New York Lt. Gov. George Clark, who renamed it Hyde Hall after his wife, Ann Hyde. The name Hyde Park was applied to an area described as ``ye estate, North of Hempstead Plain - one-half mile southe of Lake Success.'' The estate was subdivided into farms in the 1800s. The mansion burned in 1819, was replaced in 1826 and survived into the 1940s. Because there was a Hyde Park upstate, the area was named New Hyde Park when a post office opened in 1871. Turning Points: It was cattle country until the mid-1800s when competition from the western plains squeezed out cattlemen, who turned to farming. Brothers Emanuel and John C. Christ and Philip S. Miller were young German immigrants who arrived after the Civil War and transformed the community. The Christs ran an inn, general store, sawmill and blacksmith shop; Miller built a meeting hall and planted hundreds of trees. John's son, Philip, became chairman of the Nassau County Board of Supervisors, 1907-16, and his son, Marcus, became a leading judge. A mile-square area was incorporated as the village of New Hyde Park in 1927. The population grew rapidly as farms were subdivided into housing developments starting in the 1920s.

In each of these stories, set in Australia, a character is confronted with the unexplainable: mysterious disappearing shapes in the elevator, an old woman who climbs to the roof of an apartment building, holds out her arms and flies off into the night, a rear-view mirror reflecting something that isn't there, a fur collar comes to life and an old car is haunted by the ghost of a man who drowned his family in it, to name a few. Each of these apparent apparitions helps the main character face something very real. These tales make good read alouds or read alones for kids who want to read Stephen King but aren't quite up to it.

A lively account of the history and culture of Sydney by a much-loved local author. The book is intended for residents interested in the history of their city, and for the more cultured tourist. Contains a great number of fascinating anecdotes about places and buildings and the historical figures associated with them. It serves as an admirable companion to the more practical guides to Sydney (eg. Lonely Planet) and is much shorter than its house-brick competitors. Contains six maps and 24 pages of colour photos. Brilliantly written, as if Ruth Park is actually there with you as a friend. ' Elizabeth Ellis in the Sydney Morning Herald The Park style is a perfectly tuned instrument, in charge of imagery and information, with a little picture bomb going off in the mind's eye every third line or so ' Alex Buzo, Sydney Morning Herald

    Ruth Park: A Celebration
Marion Halligan writes on Ruth Park's novels: 'Some Sorcery in the Subconscious' One of the delights of reading Ruth Park's autobiographies is the insight they offer into her novels. The rat, for instance, that in Fishing in the Styx (1993) sits on a window-sill, 'a composed leisurely rat . . . murderous as Set, a kitten-eater', the sneering and frightening but not otherwise harming rat we've already met in The Harp in the South (1948) nibbling a baby. It is ferociously murdered by the child's mother, the young and once more pregnant Roie, but not before it has run up under her skirt and needed to be beaten off. When Roie dies in childbirth shortly afterwards the reader remembers the rat and lives the horror of it all over again. That's what fiction does. It takes the events of the writer's life - lived through, heard of, read about - and turns them into powerful stories. It's a process that Ruth Park is aware of, has lived through many times, but never takes for granted, never pretends to understand: No one can truly tell how novels are written, least of all myself. Structure, plot, storyline, creation of many characters who must, absolutely must, walk, talk, and think for themselves - all that can be explained. But the primordium cannot be defined.
