Tom Paine, the son of a Quaker corset maker, was born in Thetford in Norfolk on 29th January, 1737. After being educated at the local grammar school Paine became an apprentice corset maker in Kent. This was followed by work as an exciseman in Lincolnshire and a school teacher in London
In 1768 Paine moved to Lewes where he was employed as an excise officer. Paine became involved in local politics, serving on the town council and establishing a debating club in a local inn. Paine upset his employers when he demanded a higher salary. Paine was dismissed and he responded by publishing a pamphlet The Case of the Officers of Excise . While in London Paine met Benjamin Franklin who encouraged him to emigrate to America.

Make a signal
In honour of my Father's birthday, I bought him two books by Jack Broome, another Navy signaller, and author of "Convoy is to scatter". They are "Make a Signal" and the ingeniously named sequel, "Make Another Signal". They're full of information about naval signalling through the ages, and include some of the Royal Navy's trademark drollery. Examples include: From Senior officer to submarine, apparently in difficulties: WHAT ARE YOU DOING? From Submarine: LEARNING A LOT. Convoy escort destroyer to anonther Destroyer:
COMMENCE HOSTILITIES WITH JAPAN
Destroyer replies:
PERMISSION TO FINISH BREAKFAST FIRST? From Admiralty to Destroyer:
PROCEED WITH ALL DESPATCH.
From Destroyer to Admiralty:

From Admiralty to Destroyer:

From Destroyer to Admiralty:

The first ship rounded a bend and slowed down to wait for the other. As her consort did not appear, she called her up by radio.

"The Seven Stars is one of the oldest pubs in London, built in 1602, and it still looks ancient. Nowadays it lies behind the Royal
Courts of Justice, and a lot of the customers are lawyers, court reporters,etc. Hence Tom's name, because the famous libertarian of the US revolution came from Norwich and always remained British. You probably know that solicitors and barristers here still wear wigs and gowns in court. Tom has a set of "tabs" that he wears in sympathy the small white tie, like two ribbons in an upside-down V. He sometimes also wears a chorister's ruffle, as worn by boy choristers at Westminster Abbey. Tom is entirely at home on top of the glass washer, alongside people on the velvet seat cushions, or on top of the bar, where he is photographed daily by admirers. He is extremely phlegmatic, and enjoys putting his front paws on a table to see what customers are eating. He is known around here as our weapon of mouse destruction." To the Legislature and the Executive Directory of the French Republic THE plan contained in this work is not adapted for any particular country alone: the principle on which it is based is general. But as the rights of man are a new study in this world, and one needing protection from priestly imposture, and the insolence of oppressions too long established, I have thought it right to place this little work under your safeguard. When we reflect on the long and dense night in which France and all Europe have remained plunged by their governments and their priests, we must feel less surprise than grief at the bewilderment caused by the first burst of light that dispels the darkness. The eye accustomed to darkness can hardly bear at first the broad daylight. It is by usage the eye learns to see, and it is the same inpassing from any situation to its opposite. As we have not at one instant renounced all our errors, we cannot at one stroke acquire knowledge of all our rights. France has had the honor of adding to the word Liberty that of Equality;

Well, yes its true we have our problems in the west, and one of them is the price of oil. So what do we do as citizens to voice our concerns? We write letters to the editor or we get our politicians to blame GW Bush. But that is so booring isnt it? What we need to do is protest like they do in Lebanon. And then see how the Lebanese government responds to the concerns of the local populous Of course this is the BBC and you didnt hear it here first Posted by Kiwi Bob at 03:32 PM Comments (1) TrackBack (0)

Envisioning A Just World Order via
Fair-Sharing of Income from Our Common-Heritage Wealth
The following suggestion for sharing income from invested capital (as distinct from applied labor) derives from a basic concern about justice/fairness. It is based on some crucial insights set forth in Tom Paine's 1797 pamphlet called Agrarian Justice . In that pamphlet, Paine noted the crucial distinction between (1) natural wealth (from which all life on earth should derive a fair-share benefit) and (2) those "improvements" on natural wealth (such as cultivation, buildings, factories, tools, etc.) which are the result of private effort, and should, therefore, be the private property of those who contributed the "improvement." Paine attributed the growing gap between rich and poor (even evident in his time) to the fact that those who "improved" natural wealth were permitted to have private ownership of both (1) the natural wealth itself and (2) the improvement of it. This, he noted, results in a basic economic rip-off on the part of the most aggressive and acquisitive down through the ages, which must be remedied if we are to have global economic juctice. We agree!! The issue of fairness arises in noting the extent to which the already rich are getting very much richer while the already poor, or those just "getting by," are getting poorer and that this is happening at an especially alarming rate within virtually every one of corporate America's trading partners. All over the world the pattern is the same the rich get their income from capital, especially productive capital-goods, while the rest of every population get their incomes from wages and salaries in return for working

Tom Paine: The Man Who Inspired the United States War of Liberation
January 1995
Hans Peterson recently presented a widely acclaimed one-hour drama of the life of Tom Paine on local PBS television stations. He is a well-known local radio personality. His presentation to The Humanists of Utah contained much of the same material. Thomas Paine was one of the most admired and respected men in America in 1776. Twenty years later, he was one of the most hated and vilified men in the country. What happened? He spoke his mind. Without hesitation, without spin, without polls, without compromise. All of you know two things that Tom Paine wrote. The first I will share with you in just a moment. They are eight words that you hear once a year but probably don't focus on the man who said it. The man who gave our country its official name died alone, shunned and despised, in a seedy hotel in New York City. During the Revolutionary War, almost every American soldier carried a copy of a pamphlet by Paine in his pocket. At George Washington's orders, his officers would read these words by Thomas Paine to the soldiers before a battle: "Oh, the summer soldier and the sunshine patriot, will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered. Yet we have this consolation with us: The harder the conflict the more glorious the triumph."

Tom Paine, Tom Tomorrow, and Michael Moore By Brian Carnell Monday, January 13, 2003 This week there were a couple of amusingly odd observations about America's number one stupid white man, Michael Moore. Writing for TomPaine.Com, Richard Blow used Moore as a launching pad for an article wondering why Left wing authors are excluded from American mass media. Blow wrote, Michael Moore has a problem: Nobody wants to put him on television. "I’ve been on a total of two network shows in nine months," the lefty filmmaker and author recently told The New York Times. "What’s going on with that?" It’s a fair question. After all, Moore’s book, Stupid White Men, has spent months on bestseller lists. His film "Bowling for Columbine," is the most explicitly political film in recent memory. Its concluding interview with Charlton Heston reduced one of America’s leading gun fanatics to a state of embarrassing, self-incriminating incoherence and not, as his apologists insist, because Heston has Alzheimer’s. Richard Blow has a problem he took the inveterate liar Moore at his word. Moore's two network claim that he has been shut out is easily debunked by a quick Lexis/Nexis search. As weblogger Tim Blair noted back at the beginning of December when Moore was trying to sell this line of nonsense

Tom Paine, Tom Tomorrow, and Michael Moore Previous Topic Next Topic Topics Page Page: 1 Chronological Order Roger Aramayo Friday, January 17, 2003 Reply New Topic Single Message View There shouldn't be a dilemma. There are things that people say that are based on facts. Then there are things that are clearly based on humor. If Moore says the election in 2000 was stolen, and then proceeds to talk about what happened to voter rolls etc..., then he's saying something but on what he thinks is fact. If he says that Florida Jews are assassinating German tourists, that's obviously not to be taken seriously. If Moore makes humorous observations, that's one thing. However, you guys have been saying he's a liar. That means some of the factual things he's been saying, or what he's been representing as facts, are false. I fail to see what the source of confusion is. It isn't like you, Brian, haven't had a chance to prove his dishonesty. Instead I was treated to Robert's assertions that the Bank scene was misleading, eventhough most of the facts he took issue with were apparent from listening to the bank employee describe what turned out to be called the "more bang for your buck" promotion. When you said he didn't deal with African-American violence, you were only partially correct anyway. I agreed with your basic point, but I don't happen to think he lied on screen or anything. In any case, I have no problem distinguishing between jokes and errata that permeate the writings of PJ O'Rourke or someone like that.

Abstract Born in 1790, the son of a shoemaker from Ashburton, Devon. He received six years education from the local Church of England school, learnt to read and write and at age of twelve left school and was apprenticed as a tinplateman in Plymouth. In 1813 he married a local woman and moved to London where he tried to earn a living by selling the writings of reformers such as tom paine. He also began publishing a radical newspaper called The Republican and became involved in the campaign against child labour. Ultimately, he ended up living in poverty but when he died in 1843, a large number of people attended his funeral in recognition of his important role in achieving a free press.

Richard found work as a tinsmith but in the winter of 1816, Carlile had his hours reduced by his employer. Short-time work created serious economic problems for the Carlile family. For the first time in his life, Carlile began attending political meetings. At these meetings Carlile heard speakers like
