Thomas Paine: Citizen of the World
By Professor John Belchem Page 2 of 6 1. Common Sense 2. Rights of Man 3. Members unlimited 4. Age of Reason ... Print entire article Rights of Man On Paine's return to England in 1787, this democratic republicanism reached its most influential expression in his two-part Rights of Man (1791-2), prompted by the need to refute Edmund Burke's critical Reflections on the Revolution in France. For citizen Paine the French Revolution represented a much-needed new beginning, an age of reason in which universal and natural rights (at least for men) were no longer denied by privilege and the past, by spurious argument premised on dubious history, bogus constitutionalism, invented tradition or inherited superstition. A talented writer, Paine deployed his 'intellectual vernacular prose' to render natural rights and rational republicanism accessible, uncompromising and all-embracing, including the 'swinish multitude' disparaged by Burke. 'Paine found both the language and the programme to attract working people to politics, underlining its relevance to their experience of economic hardship.'

Paine, Thomas Revolucionario liberal (Thetford, Norfolk, Inglaterra, 1737 - Nueva York, 1809).

(Elihu Palmer was a contemporary of Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson, and this work, along with Age of Reason and Reason the Only Oracle of Man was one of the leading statements of Deism in the American Founding Period.)

The purpose of this page is to provide a resource for people interested in exploring American Deism, particularly as presented in Thomas Paine's Age of Reason It is not the purpose of this page to serve as a focus for across-the-board anti-Christian propaganda. In fact, many of the positions stated by the Deist authors referenced here are compatible with basic Christian precepts. More importantly, even a cursory reading of these authors establishes that they were not Atheists, as they are sometimes painted today, but instead held a deep belief grounded in reasoned analysis that God exists, and that Atheism is to be resisted no less than is religious fanaticism. An understanding of the views of these authors is essential to an understanding the American Founding Fathers, who incorporated many of these ideas in their natural law political philosophy..

Etext of paine's pamphlet.

Common Sense
by Thomas Paine Introduction Perhaps the sentiments contained in the following pages, are not yet sufficiently fashionable to procure them general favor; a long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right, and raises at first a formidable outcry in defence of custom. But the tumult soon subsides. Time makes more converts than reason. As a long and violent abuse of power, is generally the Means of calling the right of it in question (and in matters too which might never have been thought of, had not the Sufferers been aggravated into the inquiry) and as the King of England had undertaken in his own Right, to support the Parliament in what he calls Theirs, and as the good people of this country are grievously oppressed by the combination, they have an undoubted privilege to inquire into the pretensions of both, and equally to reject the usurpation of either. In the following sheets, the author hath studiously avoided every thing which is personal among ourselves. Compliments as well as censure to individuals make no part thereof. The wise, and the worthy, need not the triumph of a pamphlet; and those whose sentiments are injudicious, or unfriendly, will cease of themselves unless too much pains are bestowed upon their conversion. The cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind. Many circumstances hath, and will arise, which are not local, but universal, and through which the principles of all Lovers of Mankind are affected, and in the Event of which, their Affections are interested. The laying of a Country desolate with Fire and Sword, declaring War against the natural rights of all Mankind, and extirpating the Defenders thereof from the Face of the Earth, is the Concern of every Man to whom Nature hath given the Power of feeling; of which Class, regardless of Party Censures, is the

PAINE’S FOOTNOTE ON THE TRANSIT OF VENUS
by
Robert J. Havlik, Emeritus Librarian
University of Notre Dame
Thomas Paine ( 1737 -1809) was an English born, American political figure, philosopher and author of FOOTNOTE ON THE TRANSIT OF VENUS. The works of Thomas Paine are said to have influenced many of the founders of the United States. Paine's The Age of Reason: Being an Investigation of True and False Theology , 1794-96, was the results of Paine’s years of study and reflection on the place of religion in society. It was very popular and controversial in its time. It also touches on Paine’s interest in science and astronomy. The work is still in print. The excerpt below is part of Paine’s introduction to his theories on the plurality of worlds. In it he describes the planetary system, as known at the time, in terms of Kepler’s Laws. He then uses the observation of the Transit of Venus as a practical application of the laws. The footnote is presented here in BOLD for emphasis.

" Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one " INTRODUCTION
All the books in this 'Squashed Philosophers' series are impressive. But few of their author's lives are as impressive as that of Thomas Pain. Born in Thetford, Norfolk, in 1737, he achieved little at school and left aged 12. He was apprenticed to his father, a corset-maker, but failed to take up the trade. He briefly went to sea, and then worked as an excise officer until he was dismissed for agitating for improved pay. In 1774, a chance meeting with Benjamin Franklin in London led him to abandon his wife and travel to America, where he added the 'e' to his surname and established his fame by writing the pamphlet Common Sense (1776), an explanation of the war with England. He was appointed secretary to the Committee of Foreign Affairs in 1777, but lost his post two years later after making indiscreet revelations about the French alliance.
In 1776 he returned to England to promote new ideas about ironfounding, and there wrote

PAINE, Thomas,
born in Thetford, Norfolk, England, 29 January, 1737; died in New York, 8 June, 1809. His father was a Quaker and stay-maker, and Paine was brought up to the trade. He left home before reaching his majority, and went to London, but soon moved to Sandwich, where he married the daughter of an excise man and entered the excise service. On the death of his wife, who lived but a year, he returned to London, and, after teaching, re-entered the excise service, in which he remained for some years, employing some of his leisure time in writing prose and verse and preaching from dissenting pulpits. He was selected by his official associates to embody in a paper their complaints and desires regarding the management of the excise: and on this work he displayed such ability as a writer that Benjamin Franklin , then the Pennsylvania colony's agent at London, suggested that America would be a more satisfactory field for the exercise of his special abilities. Naturally a republican and radical, and so persistent a critic of England's government and political customs that he seemed almost to hate his native land, Paine came to this country in 1774, and, through letters from Franklin, at once found work for his pen. Within a year he became editor of the

78. Thomas Paine / Dissertations On First Principles Of Government
Written by thomas paine, July 1795.
http://www.cooperativeindividualism.org/paine_dissertations_on_first_prin.html
Dissertations on First Principles of Government Thomas Paine There is no subject more interesting to every man than the subject of government. His security, be he rich or poor, and in a great measure his prosperity, are connected therewith; it is therefore his interest as well as his duty to make himself acquainted with its principles, and what the practise ought to be. Every art and science, however imperfectly known at first, has been studied, improved and brought to what we call perfection by the progressive labors of succeeding generations; but the science of government has stood still. No improvement has been made in the principle and scarcely any in the practise till the American Revolution began. In all the countries of Europe (except in France) the same forms and systems that were erected in the remote ages of ignorance still continue, and their antiquity is put in the place of principle; it is forbidden to investigate their orgin, or by what right they exist. If it be asked how has this happened, the answer is easy: they are established on a principle that is false, and they employ their power to prevent detection. Notwithstanding the mystery with which the science of government has been enveloped, for the purpose of enslaving, plundering and imposing upon mankind, it is of all things the least mysterious and the most easy to be understood. The meanest capacity cannot be at a loss, if it begins its inquiries at the right point. Every art and science has some point, or alphabet, at which the study of that art or science begins, and by the assistance of which the progress is facilitated. The same method ought to be observed with respect to the science of government.
