'Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.
Thomas Paine (1737-1809) If there must be trouble let it be in my day, that my child may have peace.

    THOMAS PAINE
PAINE, THOMAS (1737-1809), English author, was born at Thetford, Norfolk, on the 29th of January 1737, the son of a Quaker staymaker. After several years at sea and after trying various occupations on land, Paine took up his fathers trade in London, where he supplemented his meagre grammar school education by attending science lectures. He succeeded in 1762 in gaining an appointment in the excise, but was discharged for neglect of duty in 1765. Three years later, however, he received another appointment, at Lewes in Sussex. He took a vigorous share in the debates of a local Whig club, and in 1772 he wrote a pamphlet embodying the grievances of excisemen and supporting their demands for an increase of pay. In 1774 he was dismissed the service for absence without leavein order to escape his creditors. At the downfall of Robespierre Paine was restored to his seat in the convention, and served until it adjourned in October 170c. In 706 he published a long letter to Washington, attacking his military reputation and his presidential policy with inexcusable bitterness. In 1802 Paine sailed for America, but while his services in behalf of the colonies were gratefully remembered, his Age of Reason and his attack on Washington had alienated many of his friends. He died in New York on the 8th of June 1809, and was buried at New Rochelle, but his body was in. 1819 removed to England by William Cobbett. See the biography by Moncure D. Conway (I892).

Essay by James Dye discusses David Hume's influence on the Deism of Ethan Allen, thomas paine, and Elihu Palmer.
    http://sun.soci.niu.edu/~phildept/Dye/Miracles.html
Enquiry concerning Human Understanding E the History of England , his reputation as a notorious infidel clearly stemmed from the Natural History of Religion and the Enquiry concerning Human Understanding Part I ad hoc , case-by-case route to their goal. Further, the cases considered were normally those which were most at issue, namely those pertaining to the foundations of Christianity. More importantly, these are only examples, not the actual targets of the critique. His argument comprises two parts. The first is an epistemological analysis of the criteria for rational assent to any possibly true. The second part is a more or less empirical survey of the historical conditions which prevent actual miracle reports from satisfying the criteria established in the first part. E Divines law , i.e. that it holds in all cases, including this one? moral law; and almost all instances of his using the term to refer to physical Enquiry E impossibility of miracles. seeming E A miracle may be accurately defined, a transgression of a law of nature by a particular volition of the Deity, or by the interposition of some invisible agent. A miracle may either be discoverable by men or not. This alters not its nature and essence. (ibid.)

    The Thomas Paine Library
Thomas Paine was one of the recognized legends in the founding of this country. He was an author and revolutionary activist who took part in three revolutions. His role in American history, as well as world history, is monumental. John Adams said: " Without the pen of Paine, the sword of Washington would have been wielded in vain. " Paine's impact on philosophy and politics helped mold the age of democratic revolutions and reverberates down to this day.

Common Sense "These are the times that try men's souls," begins Thomas Paine's Common Sense , the impassioned pamphlet that helped ignite the American Revolution. Published in Philadelphia in January of 1776, Common Sense sold 150,000 copies almost immediately. A powerful piece of propaganda, it attacked the idea of a hereditary monarchy, dismissed the chance for reconciliation with England, and outlined the economic benefits of independence while espousing equality of rights among citizens. Paine fanned a flame that was already burning, but many historians argue that his work unified dissenting voices and persuaded patriots that the American Revolution was not only necessary, but an epochal step in world history. Thomas Paine
By Punkerslut The author of the American Revolution and a strong Abolitionist, Thomas Paine was a political writer who dared to ask the questions that were punishable by death. He was as much defiant of the Monarch powers that hunted him down as he was defiant of the religious powers that ostracized him from civilization. When Paine was only eight years of age, he immediately began to doubt the Bible. He had heard a sermon on atonement; the sermon described how god had murdered his only son to revenge himself when there was no other way. Upon hearing this appalling doctrine, this child of innocence and beauty the young Thomas Paine became an infidel and disagreed with the Bible. From these bright, inquisitive beginnings in childhood, Thomas Paine made great strides for the advancement of Rationalism. Robert Green Ingersoll once said of Thomas Paine, "With his name left out, the history of liberty cannot be written." [ On Thomas Paine , by Robert G. Ingersoll, 1870.]

    Paine, Thomas (1737-1809)
English-born radical political writer who sailed for Philadelphia in 1774 and subsequently argued for American independence. After serving with the American army, he returned to England in 1787 and wrote in support of the French Revolution. Arraigned for treason, he fled to Paris but was imprisoned for offering the French king asylum in the USA. While incarcerated he wrote The Age of Reason (1793) in which he argued aggressively that Christianity and pluralism were incompatible: . . . to believe that God created a plurality of worlds at least as numerous as what we call stars, renders the Christian system of faith at once little and ridiculous and scatters it in the mind like feathers in the air. The two beliefs cannot be held together in the same mind; and he who thinks that he believes in both has thought but little of either. See Christian doctrines and pluralism

From the Modern History Sourcebook A brief comparative analysis by thomas paine.
    http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/paine-deism.html
    Back to Modern History SourceBook
    Modern History Sourcebook:
    Thomas Paine:
Of the Religion of Deism Compared with the Christian Religion
Every person, of whatever religious denomination he may be, is a DEIST in the first article of his Creed. Deism, from the Latin word Deus, God, is the belief of a God, and this belief is the first article of every man's creed. It is on this article, universally consented to by all mankind, that the Deist builds his church, and here he rests. Whenever we step aside from this article, by mixing it with articles of human invention, we wander into a labyrinth of uncertainty and fable, and become exposed to every kind of imposition by pretenders to revelation. The Persian shows the Zend-Avesta of Zoroaster, the lawgiver of Persia, and calls it the divine law; the Bramin shows the Shaster, revealed, he says, by God to Brama, and given to him out of a cloud; the Jew shows what he calls the law of Moses, given, he says, by God, on the Mount Sinai; the Christian shows a collection of books and epistles, written by nobody knows who, and called the New Testament; and the Mahometan shows the Koran, given, he says, by God to Mahomet: each of these calls itself revealed religion, and the only true Word of God, and this the followers of each profess to believe from the habit of education, and each believes the others are imposed upon. But when the divine gift of reason begins to expand itself in the mind and calls man to reflection, he then reads and contemplates God and His works, and not in the books pretending to be revelation. The creation is the Bible of the true believer in God. Everything in this vast volume inspires him with sublime ideas of the Creator. The little and paltry, and often obscene, tales of the Bible sink into wretchedness when put in comparison with this mighty work.
