The Shawl
Author Info: Cynthia Ozick
This slender volume consists of two award-winning short stories, both originally published in The New Yorker . In The Shawl (1980), Rosa Lublin is reduced to having her baby, Magda, suck on a shawl, in order to keep her quite enough to escape the notice of concentration camp guards. But when her niece, Stella, takes the shawl the baby is discovered and murdered in a particularly brutal fashion. Rosa (1983) takes place thirty years later in Miami. Rosa has recently destroyed her antique/junk shop in New York City. Now she barely scrapes by in a dingy hotel room, funded by Stella, the two joined to each other by secrets and guilt. She spends much of her time writing letters to Magda, on any pieces of paper she can scrounge. Though Stella says that life is divided into three parts for survivors : "The life before, the life during, the life after", Rosa finds herself eternally stuck in "during." The awful experiences of the past continue to dominate her life. For much of this story she is awaiting a package from Stella, a package that will contain the shawl : "Magda's shawl! Magda's swaddling cloth. Magda's shroud." Stella is a difficult woman, loathing everyone and everything around her. But then, who can blame her ? It is more a testament to the resilience of the human soul in general, than an indictment of this particular character, that more of the survivors of the Holocaust were not so embittered.

www.ReaAward.org References The Jewish Student Online Research Center (JSOURCE) profile of Cynthia Ozick Bedford/St. Martin's ... with Cynthia Izick Cynthia Ozick was born in New York City, the second of two children. She subsequently moved to the Bronx with her parents, who owned a pharmacy in the Pelham Bay section. Her parents had emigrated to America from the northwest region of Russia. At the age of five and a half, Ozick entered heder, the Yiddish-Hebrew "room" where, in the America of those years, Jewish pupils were sent for religious instruction. There she was confronted by a rabbi who told Cynthia's bobe [grandmother], who had accompanied her granddaughter to school, in Yiddish, "Take her home; a girl doesn't have to study." Ozick dates her feminism to that time and is especially grateful to her grandmother for bringing her back to school the very next day and insisting that she be accepted. While Ozick describes the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx as a lovely place, she found it "brutally difficult to be a Jew" there. She remembers having stones thrown at her and being called Christ's killer as she ran past the two churches in her neighborhood. She was particularly uncomfortable at school because she would not, on principle, sing Christian Christmas carols, and was humiliated as a public example for that. While writing The Cannibal Galaxy, a novel set in a Jewish all-day school, she asserts, "I thought of my own suffering, deeply suffering wormlike childhood in grade school; of my mother's endurances in grade school as an immigrant child.... Carelessness in a teacher of small children can burn in impotence for life, like a brand or horrible sign."

Cynthia Ozick
(b.
Cynthia Ozick was born in New York City on April 17, 1928, to Russian Jewish immigrants, William and Celia Regelson Ozick. Her childhood was spent in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx, where her parents worked long hours to maintain a pharmacy during the Depression. She recalls these years as an idyllic time of reading and dreaming of writing; she also remembers being made to feel “hopelessly stupid” at school and being subjected to overt anti-Semitism. After graduating from Hunter High School, Ozick went on to complete a B.A. at New York University and an M.A. in English Literature at Ohio State University, where she wrote a thesis on the late novels of Henry James. James became a kind of obsession for her, both inspiring and inhibiting her burgeoning writing career. For nearly seven years she struggled to write a long, “philosophical” novel entitled Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love
