A Cynthia Ozick Reader from the University of Indiana
An interview with Cynthia Ozick from the Atlantic Monthly A National Book Foundation conversation with Cynthia Ozick, with a biogaphical note Ruth Puttermesser, yearning for a life of the mind (her idol is George Eliot), finds herself mired in the lowest circles of city bureaucracy. Her love life is hopeless. Her fantasies are more influential than reality - she takes Hebrew lessons from an uncle who died before she was born; she makes a golem out of the earth of her houseplants. Still, she turns out to be the best mayor New York City ever elected. Soon enough, though, paradise gained becomes paradise lost, and the impact of getting exactly what you want and then losing it plays itself out in dramatic and surprising fashion. Cynthia Ozick has won many awards and prizes for her writing, including the American Academy of Arts. She lives near New York City.

Ozick, Cynthia The Shawl
Genre Collection (Short Stories) (69 pp.) Keywords Abandonment Aging Children Human Worth ... Trauma Summary The Shawl is comprised of two stories, "The Shawl" and "Rosa," originally published in The New Yorker respectively in 1980 and 1983. The first and much shorter of the stories is an extremely powerful account of the brutality of the Nazi concentration camps. Rosa, (who we meet again 30 years later in the second story), has been hiding and protecting her daughter Magda in a shawl. Rosa's 14 year old niece, Stella, (who also is central to the second story) takes the shawl from the child for her own comfort. The horrific events that follow, tiny Magda's search for her shawl and discovery by a German soldier who hurtles her to her death against an electrified fence, shape the remainder of Rosa's lifeand this book. In the sequel, Rosa, now 59 years old, has moved to Miami (a "hellish place") after literally destroying the junk shop in New York which she had owned. She lives an isolated life in a dilapidated one room apartment. Stella, who remained in New York, supports her financially, and is her primary source of contact with the outside world. A serendipitous meeting at a laundromat with a Mr. Persky, however, changes Rosa's life.

Learn More About
After a certain number of years our faces become our biographies. We get to be responsible for our faces.
If we had to say what writing is, we would define it essentially as an act of courage
I'm not afraid of facts, I welcome facts but a congeries of facts is not equivalent to an idea. This is the essential fallacy of the so-called "scientific" mind. People who mistake facts for ideas are incomplete thinkers; they are gossips.
The engineering is secondary to the vision.
To imagine the unimaginable is the highest use of the imagination.

Criticism
Fall, 1998 by Arlene Fish Wilner
Ironically, the disjunction between thought and feeling which some feel characterizes her fiction is decidedly absent in her rare personal memoir, "A Drugstore in Winter." Unsentimental, lyrical, and moving, the essay recounts childhood moments recollected in tranquility as the young Cynthia escapes the banal cruelties of early schooldays by losing herself in Lang's fairy tales, borrowed from the Traveling Library, and absorbed within the warmth of her father's Bronx pharmacy. The books "transform" her: "I am a luckless goosegirl, friendless, and forlorn. In P.S. 71 I carry, weighty as a cloak, the ineradicable knowledge of my scandalcross-eyed, dumb, an imbecile at arithmetic; in P.S. 71 I am publicly shamed because I am caught not singing Christmas carols; in P.S. 71 I am repeatedly accused of deicide.... I am incognito. No one knows who I truly am."(6) Next
