INTRODUCTION
Records of a small poetry and review magazine. Consists of general, contributor, and publication correspondence. Includes materials primarily pertaining to the magazine's last six years of publication, 1981-1987. See Collection 3705 for material relating to the magazine's first fifteen years.
DONOR INFORMATION
Open Places was loaned to the University of Missouri for copying by Eleanor Bender, the editor of Open Places , on 2 August 1988 (Accession No. 4863).
HISTORICAL SKETCH
Eleanor M. Bender began editing Open Places , a contemporary poetry and review magazine, out of her New York City apartment in 1966. With the support of private monies and subscriptions, the magazine was published sporadically. From its first appearance, Bender intended Open Places to be a quarterly publication, but this was not realized until 1968 when she moved to Columbia, Missouri. Through the assistance of Max Baird, Bender began printing the magazine quarterly as a Southern Critic publication. Together Bender and Baird produced issues 5 and 6. With issue 7/8

    Introduction
    c) Mass-market paperback editions will not be acquired, even if they are the only edition available, unless they are housed in Spencer Research Library; d) Non-sf works by authors who are listed because of their prominence as science fiction writers will not be automatically acquired; e) It can not be guaranteed that every anthology and literary magazine in which these authors' new work appears can be acquired. (Most work that appears initially in little magazines or anthologies will eventually be published in a monograph by the author.) Although authors listed in Parts I-III of the previous edition of this list who died before 1980 have been removed, any previously unpublished work and new editions of their work will be bought as published.

    Kulchur Foundation
    New York NY
Poetry video. An experimental art film of seething, coming-to-the-surface violence and raging, polyphonous voices. The collaged surface of images and rich, color-saturated shots of artists speaking and repeating Owens' poetry from behind veils or screens of rain-splattered glass or meshes of ropes suggest new ways of reading Owens' poetry. One motif predominates: a strong, white-robed Native American woman striding through tall green marsh grass. This image connects the visceral with the earth, and suggests that colonized or exterminated peoples (or genders) still live in the core of the cultural imagination. Skip To Performing Arts Collection List
From 19th century American vaudeville to 20th century British experimental theatre, materials in the performing arts category form research collection emphasizing stage productions. The personal papers of theatrical personalities and the archives of theatre groups and agencies are collected, as well as ephemeral and promotional materials. Collections reflecting experimental theatre's challenges to convention range from the Ballantine papers, chronicling the development of the Provincetown Players in the early 20th century, to the archives of the Living Theatre, whose purpose was to advocate anarchy and radical social change beginning in the 1950's. Other theatre groups and collectives focus on alternative theatrical methods: the archives of the Bread and Puppet Theatre, for example, show their efforts at communicating through puppets and realia, rather than verbal dialog, and the Firehouse Theatre archives was interested in new staging techniques. The Joint Stock Theatre Group archives show the efforts made towards "new" writing, and in the powerful collaboration between playwright, director, and actors. Radical political commentary is reflected in the collections of the San Francisco Mime Troupe and the Squat Theatre, whose productions were powerful enough to force their exile from Hungary. Theatrical agents' archives provide a wealth of research potential. Arthur Bertram was a theatrical agent and business manager for theatres, touring companies, and individual actors. His clients included Mrs. Patrick Campbell, Marie Tempest, and Henry Irving. Toby Cole operated as a theatrical-literary agent in New York City, representing such notables as Saul Bellow, Zero Mostel, and Sam Shepard. The Universal Movement Theatre Repertory was the only booking agency for experimental theatre groups in the United States and Europe.
