Ovid was born in Sulmo, in central Italy. His family was of equestrian rank and therefore fairly well off (cf. Catullus' family background). Ovid was given the standard education for a young man of his rank and was groomed for a career in law (the ancient equivalent of the civil service). He held a couple of minor posts, but then turned to poetry, for which (he tells us) he had displayed a natural talent since youth. He soon won the patronage of M. Valerius Messalla Corvinus (64 B.C. - A.D. 8), a patrician who had won fame as an orator, soldier, and linguist and was a well-known patron of the arts. [Messalla fought on the Republican side at Philippi but later became a supporter of Antony. He transferred his allegiance to Octavian in disgust at Antony's liaison with Cleopatra and fought against Antony at Actium. He was the man who proposed the title of

The Roman Poet Ovid

Tristia and Letters from Pontus ) have no other topic than the poet's sorrows, his exquisite taste and fruitful invention have redeemed them from the charge of being tedious, and they are read with pleasure and even with sympathy. The two great works of Ovid are his Metamorphoses and his Fasti . They are both mythological poems, and from the former we [note - "we" here means Bulfinch] have taken most of our stories of Greek and Roman mythology. A late writer thus characterizes these poems: "The rich mythology of Greece furnished Ovid, as it may still furnish the poet, the painter, and the sculptor, with materials for his art. With exquisite taste, simplicity, and pathos he has narrated the fabulous traditions of early ages, and given to them that appearance of reality which only a master hand could impart. His pictures of nature are striking and true; he selects with care that which is appropriate; he rejects the superfluous; and when he has completed his work, it is neither defective nor redundant. The Metamorphoses are read with pleasure by youth, and are re-read in more advanced age with still greater delight. The poet ventured to predict that his poem would survive him, and be read wherever the Roman name was known."

Beauty and the Paradigm
by Mark K. Anderson
The following essay was originally published in two parts in the Summer 1997 and the Fall 1997/Winter 1998 Shakespeare Oxford Newsletter. Last year, I wrote an article for the Shakespeare Oxford Newsletter on Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Kuhn's concept of "paradigm shifts" and the Oxfordian movement. ( "A Little More Than Kuhn and Less Than Kind," Newsletter, Winter 1996.) In the interim, the essay's reception outside the Oxfordian enclave has been delightfully mixed. It has been assigned reading lists in higher education, while in the Internet's online world, the Obfuscation Police were apparently called on to disperse the growing crowds around Kuhn's work. "Ever since Kuhn's book came out in the 1960s, every crackpot whose ideas are rejected by the establishment has piously declared that they represent a new 'paradigm,' and that the old guard is just clinging to their outmoded ideas because they can't see beyond the old paradigm," wrote Shakespeare Authorship Page co-manager David Kathman earlier this year. "This does not mean that everyone who invokes Kuhn is a crackpot, only that many of them are, and that just invoking Kuhn in favor of your cause doesn't mean a whole lot." Online correspondent Caius Marcius went Kathman one better. He stated that the authorship controversy was about a "fact" -i.e. whether Oxford or Shakspere of Stratford was the author-and not a theory. Therefore Kuhn's findings were irrelevant to Oxfordianism. (Never mind that the same sleight-of-hand can be performed with Kuhn's own case study. Namely, the stir Copernicus caused was merely about a "fact"-i.e. whether the Sun or the Earth is at the center of the Solar System. Argal Kuhn's findings are irrelevant to Kuhn's data.)

Some information on Publius Ovidius Naso (Ovid)

Recent Ovidian Bibliography

Ovid's poetry falls into three divisions: the works of his youth, of his middle age, and of his years in exile. In the first period, Ovid continued the elegiac tradition of Roman poets Sextus Propertius and Albius Tibullus, both of whom he knew and admired. Ovid's Amores are erotic poems centered on Corinna, but they display little real feeling and are characterized by artificiality and cleverness. Other works of his are didactic poems, including Medicamina Faciei Femineae , a fragment of writing on cosmetics; and Remedia Amoris , a kind of recantation of the Ars Amatoria . Ovid's Medea , a tragedy highly praised by ancient critics, has not been preserved. His interest in mythology is reflected in his Heroides , or Epistulae Heroidum , 21 fictional love letters, mostly from mythological heroines to their lovers.
In his middle period Ovid wrote the Metamorphoses (8 A.D.), his greatest poetic achievement. Using Greco-Roman mythology as the material of his 15 books and change as his theme, he particularly isolates love as the agent of change, love now seen in its more profound ethical dimensions. Among readers of the late Middle Ages, the

56. The Classic Text: Ovid
ovid s fame as a poet came not from his lofty poetical achievements, but from his keen ability to interpret his age through poetry designed to amuse and cheer
http://www.uwm.edu/Library/special/exhibits/clastext/clspg049.htm
P ublius Ovidius Naso (Ovid, 43 B.C.- 17 A.D.?) was born into an aristocratic family and educated in law and rhetoric in Rome. Ovid found his true calling however in poetry, and following the completion of his education in Athens, he settled in Rome. His first love poems, Amores , brought him instant celebrity and his subsequent work The Art of Love marked him as the chief of erotic poets. H is publication of The Art of Love was however, ill-timed as it followed closely the banishment of Augustus' daughter Julia for profligacy despite her father's attempts at moral reforms. Ovid was soon exiled from the city under two charges one for his poem, and the other for not revealing evidence relating to the royal family. Ovid maintained his property but left Rome in 8 A.D. for Tomis, a frontier fortress. He died in exile in approximately 17 A.D. O vid's fame as a poet came not from his lofty poetical achievements, but from his keen ability to interpret his age through poetry designed to amuse and cheer the cultured society of Rome. His success was due to his vivacity, sparkling wit, and creative imagination. His texts have remained popular because of their studied movement, grace, and music, which appeal to readers and writers with an ear for technique. The Bible Homer Aristophanes Virgil ...
