The first link directs users to a U.Va.-hosted version of the Latin text (apparently from Ehwald's edition, ca . 1904), while the second points users to five English translations by Golding, Sandys, Garth, Brookes More, and Kline, and to six earlier editions of the Latin, the last two in html-format (1509, 1518, 1540, 1582, 1820, and 1892). The Ehwald Latin text and the 17th-c. Introduction ovid s influence on Western art and literature cannot be exaggerated. The Metamorphoses is our best classical source of 250 myths.
http://larryavisbrown.homestead.com/files/xeno.ovid1.htm
An introduction and commentary with discussion of myths and links to sources and influences in art and literature Larry A. Brown, Nashville, TN Introduction: Ovid's influence on Western art and literature cannot be exaggerated. The Metamorphoses is our best classical source of 250 myths. "The poem is the most comprehensive, creative mythological work that has come down to us from antiquity" (Galinsky). Based on its influence, "European literature and art would be poorer for the loss of the Metamorphoses than for the loss of Homer" (Hadas). Ovid was a major inspiration for Dante, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton (see bibliography on last page). If Virgil is Rome's greatest poet, Ovid is the most popular (even in his own time; Ovidian graffiti has been found on the walls of Pompeii). As one example of Ovid's influence on Western art and literature, read the famous story of Daedalus and Icarus in Book 8. Ovid's account is the earliest in extant literature, although the story is much older, found on 6th century vases. Christopher Marlowe alludes to this story in his tragedy of Dr. Faustus

Ovid
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Portrait of the poet Ovid Publius Ovidius Naso, March 20 BCE CE ) Roman poet known to the English -speaking world as Ovid , wrote on topics of love , abandoned women , and mythological transformations. Ovid wrote in elegiac couplets , with the exception of his great Metamorphoses, which he wrote in dactylic hexameter in imitation of Vergil's Aeneid and Homer's epics. Ovid does not offer an epic narrative like his predecessors but promises a chronological account of the cosmos from creation to his own day, incorporating many myths and legends from the Greek and Roman traditions. Augustus banished Ovid in CE to Tomis on the Black Sea Ars Amatoria , which had been available for some time.
  • Amores ('The Loves'), 5 books, written after 20 BCE (revised into 3 books c. 1 CE Heroides ('The Heroines') or Epistulae Heroidum BCE CE Ars Amatoria ('The Art of Love'), 3 books, the first two written about 1 BCE to 1 CE and the third somewhat later.

Study Guide for Ovid: The Art of Love
Using this Guide List of other study guides Notes for the translation by Rolfe Humphries of selections from the Amores and the Ars Amatoria. Publius Ovidus Naso (Ovid): The Loves (25-16 BCE?) Metamorphoses , by far the most important source for Greco-Roman mythology for later Europeans. His Tristia recount his lonely banishment away from Rome at the end of his life. It is sometimes suggested that the puritanical Emperor Augustus exiled him because he was offended by Ovid's love poetry, but this is uncertain. Book I: Elegy I Ovid's contemporary Virgil had begun his most famous poem, the Aeneid, with the line "Arms and the man I sing." These elegies are written in lines shorter by one foot than the hexameters that are used for more solemn epic works like the Aeneid. Minerva (Greek Athena) is the goddess of wisdom, not normally mixed up with the love-goddess Venus. Ceres is the grain-goddess, Diana the huntress of the forests. Apollo is the god of peaceful arts like poetry and music, Mars the god of war.
