Winter 2002/2003 the volcano sequence Alicia Suskin Ostriker University of Pittsburgh Press ($12.95) by Julie Drake f a reader is very lucky, maybe once a year will she come across a book of poetry that will change how she views the world. As 2002 comes to a close, this reader is happy to report the volcano sequence is that book. Ostriker's tenth volume of poetry begins with a section whose title could aptly sum up the entire book-"ruthless radiance"-and with a poem, "volcano," that lets us know this will not be a "feel-good" book, but that instead, it will burn: the volcano is a crack in the earth
the volcano is a bulge over a crack
a fault line runs under it something terrible happens
and the magma
coughs out hot beauty
thick and magnificent rage
so what if afterward everything is dead Ostriker has been called "a poet...who was raised an atheist (Jewish atheist-a special strand) and is seeking god-or the poems are." In this book, the poems continue the search for god, or rather it should be said they find god, as several of them carry on a conversation with him, as in "during the bombing of Kosovo": and you, you-

http://www.english.uiuc.edu/maps/poets/m_r/olds/about.htm
About Sharon Olds Jacque Kahn S haron Olds was born in 1942 in San Francisco. She was, in her own words, raised as a "hellfire Calvinist." After graduating from Stanford she moved east to earn a Ph.D. in English from Columbia University. Olds describes the completion of her doctorate as a transitional moment in her life: standing on the steps of the library at Columbia University, she vowed to become a poet, even if it meant giving up everything she had learned. In one respect, Olds’s imaginary sacrifice of her graduate education was an essential precondition for her artistic development. As a graduate student Olds had struggled to emulate the poets she studied. The vow she madeto write her own poetry, no matter how bad it might befreed her to develop her own voice. Olds has published eight volumes of poetry. Her first collection, Satan Says (1980), received the inaugural San Francisco Poetry Center Award. Satan Says responds to what Olds describes as some of her early poetic questions: "Is there anything that shouldn’t or can’t be written about in a poem? What has never been written about in a poem?" Startling readers with candid language and explicit imagery, Satan Says trangresses socially imposed silences. The poems explore intensely personal themes with unflinching physicality, enacting what Alicia Ostriker describes as an "erotics of family love and pain."(28).

Course Description This course focuses on contemporary women poets in the U.S. We will start off by reading Alicia Ostriker's Stealing the Language (1986) in order to provide a historical framework for the course. In her book, Ostriker argues that "'Women's poetry' exists in much the same sense that 'American poetry' exists. It has a history. It has a terrain. Many of its practitioners believe it has something like a language" (9). We will test this claim by attempting to locate elements that constitute the terrain of women's poetry; additionally, we will explore the "fit" of conemporary women poets in relation to this terrain. We will look for common "markers" in terms of themes, images, metaphors, and language. Required Texts Ostriker, Alicia. Stealing the Language: The Emergence of Women's Poetry in America . Boston: Beacon, 1986.
Course packet available at Clark's Requirements and Grade Percentages 1. Two 2-3 page papers that will serve as the basis for class presentations. (20% total)

Auden, but there are those of us who disagree." So begins Alicia Ostriker's Dancing at the Devil's Party . The nod to Auden is respectful, but it's clear that Ostriker is not in Auden's camp. Poetry "can tear at the heart with its claws, make the neural nets shiver, flood us with hope, despair, longing, ecstasy, love, anger, terror," she writes. For Ostriker, poems are both crucial and relevant. She respects poems, the way one respects magic or religion or anything that smacks of the ineffable.

classic American maverick. Author of eleven books and chapbooks of
poetry, most recently Ordinary Words (Paris Press, August 1999), she has
