(Extract letter, October 1937 written by George Orwell to his friend Jack Common). "Spanish anarchism shaded off into Utopianism at one end and sheer banditry at the other". (Observer 10th Nov 1946). George Orwell (nee Eric Blair) is best known for his seminal works, Animal Farm and 1984. It's impossible to read these works and not come away with the impression that Orwell was familiar with anarchist ideas and views. Anybody who is familiar with Orwell's work and has read Homage to Catalonia will know that Orwell was not only familiar with anarchist ideas, he saw anarchists in action and witnessed the Spanish anarchists attempts to make their ideas a reality when he was fighting in Spain in 1937. Interestingly the first edition of 1500 copies of Homage to Catalonia still hadn't sold out when he died 12 years later in 1949.

Orwell, George born 1903, Mot i h a ri, Bengal, India died Jan. 21, 1950, London Pseudonym of Eric Arthur Blair English novelist, essayist, and critic famous for his novels Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-four (1949), the latter a profound anti-Utopian novel that examines the dangers of totalitarian rule. Born Eric Arthur Blair, Orwell never entirely abandoned his original name, but his first book ( Down and Out in Paris and London ) appeared as the work of George Orwell (the surname he derived from the beautiful River Orwell in East Anglia). In time his nom de plume became so closely attached to him that few people but relatives knew his real name was Blair. The change in name corresponded to a profound shift in Orwell's life-style, in which he changed from a pillar of the British imperial establishment into a literary and political rebel. Such, Such Were the Joys Orwell won scholarships to two of England's leading schools, Winchester and Eton, and chose the latter. He stayed from 1917 to 1921. Aldous Huxley was one of his masters, and it was at Eton that he published his first writing in college periodicals. Instead of accepting a scholarship to a university, Orwell decided to follow family tradition and, in 1922, went to Burma as assistant district superintendent in the Indian Imperial Police. He served in a number of country stations and at first appeared to be a model imperial servant. Yet from boyhood he had wanted to become a writer, and when he realized how much against their will the Burmese were ruled by the British, he felt increasingly ashamed of his role as a colonial police officer. Cons Alas, he was taken from us too early. Full Review "Underneath the spreading chestnut tree, I sold you and you sold me." If for some strange, hypothetical reason I was forced to choose one favorite writer or else suffer some violent, permanently disfiguring consequence, my choice would have to be George Orwell. His fiction (1984) is profound, his satire (Animal Farm) is keen, and his reporting (Homage to Catalonia, Down and Out in Paris and London) puts today's sages of journalism to shame. Although 1984 remains one of my absolute favorite books (it's worth a read a year, just to see how we're doing), Orwell's deserves most credit for his essays. Never content to merely write about something, Orwell would immerse himself in his subjects, be it Burmese colonialism, poverty-stricken Parisians, English socialists, or the Spanish Civil War. In each case, Orwell forewent the life of Eric Blair to experience firsthand the passions and problems of his protagonists. Yet, in his compositions, he states his biases outright and takes pains never to declare himself absolutely objective. Orwell's journalistic devotion and sensibility are simply amazing. He spent his life delineating the differences between idea and fact, and his greatest novel attests to his understanding of the perils of this divide. Like no other, Orwell explored the human realities so often obscured by rhetoric or ideology.

His family having moved to England in 1907, he commenced studies at Eton in 1917, where he contributed to several college magazines. Orwell served with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma from 1922 to 1927. Years of poverty followed. In 1936 he fought for the Republicans in the Spanish civil war, and was wounded. He was admitted to a sanitorium in 1938. During World War II, Orwell served in the British Home Guard, and subsequently (from 1941 to 1943) worked for the BBC Eastern Service. He was the literary editor of the Tribune, and contributed to the Observer and the Manchester Evening News. George Orwell is most famous for his books Animal Farm (published in 1945) and 1984 (published in 1949). He died in London, England in January of 1950.
