Chronology
Introduction
George Orwell
is not only a major figure in twentieth -century literature but, more than fifty years after his death, he remains a best-selling author. Much of his work is still in print. In 1984 there were more than thirty new editions or reissues of his most famous novel, Nineteen Eighty Four , in at least sixteen languages.
From the early 1930s until his death in January 1950 Orwell earned an income as a novelist, editor, essayist, journalist, reviewer and broadcaster. He wrote novels, essays, contemporary social history, reviews, and even poetry. Eric Blair's and, later, George Orwell's writing life ranged from unpublished letters to his mother from his Eastbourne boarding school in 1911, to his first publication in 1914- a stirring, poetic call to arms, 'Awake! Young Men of England', to essays anthologised and eulogised a thousand times, such as 'Politics and the English Language', 'Shooting an Elephant', and 'The Prevention of Literature', to his best-known works, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four , the novel he completed as he was dying. His words have become part of the English language -'Newspeak'; 'Big Brother is watching you'; 'All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others'. In 1946 Orwell wrote that 'the English language is in a bad way', and that, 'Probably it is better to put off using words as long as possible.' He offered a set of maxims on word use, though concluding, 'Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous'. Orwell cared passionately about his writing and taught himself to write well.

47. Sowing Seeds Of Compassion - By Joanne Stepaniak
There is a degree of irony in selectively applying compassion. It is as if there were truth to the slogan george orwell's characters in Animal Farm came to believe, 'All animals are created equal, but some are more equal than others.' One example of this paradox is consumers who intentionally purchase dolphinfree tuna (i.e. tuna fishes that were caught and killed without injuring dolphins in the process). Their concern is solely for the dolphins (apparently because they are mammals, like us) with no regard for the dead tunas.
http://vegsource.com/joanne/seeds.htm
Compassion can be described as "empathy in action." Vegans have not cornered the market on compassion — there are many types of compassion and many ways to be compassionate. However, most people construe compassion strictly in terms of human-to-human interaction, and even then often only in light of certain groups. For example, it's common to feel empathic towards children; victims of crime, illness or tragedy; single mothers; the elderly; etc. However, some people who express compassion for one group of humans may withhold it from another. For instance, we may be compassionate towards our own ethnic group but not towards someone else's. This does not in any way diminish or devalue the emotion itself nor the positive outcomes it might proffer. Nevertheless, the compassion is confined to a very limited segment of the population; and, consequently, its ability to ignite inclusive and far-reaching social change is stymied.
There are some people or groups of people who do include non-humans in their circle of compassion, but frequently this involves just a few specific "special interest" animals (such as spotted owls, wolves, bears, tigers, elephants, whales, etc.) who may be abused, threatened or endangered. Other people focus their attention exclusively on domestic companion animals and issues related to their safety, overbreeding and adoption. Although these pursuits are unquestionably important, urgent, and have great merit, the scope of the compassion is often relatively narrow.

This site is dedicated to the poignant vision of George Orwell and his insightful novel "Animal Farm". It is the story of a utopian dream gone horribly wrong. It tells the tale of oppressed farm animals who win their freedom from their human masters, only to develop a totalitarian society that was increasingly worse than the system they rebelled against, a system full of suspicion, intolerance, and mind control.
I am Snowball, the virtuous pig that was exiled and vilified by his fellow pigs. The dark warning messages draw many parallels to the plight of the totalitarian religious organization known as "Jehovah's Witnesses", of which I was a part of for over 30 years until I was expelled for daring to question the leaders.

A Few Words from the Editor of this Website
I created this website in hopes of re-introducing Orwell to a wider readership, who may only know him through his most famous novel Nineteen Eighty Four . Seeing how frequently Orwell is quoted out of context in political discussions on the Internet often to support spurious arguments and political causes which he might have condemned in his own lifetime I hope to create a resource for political philosophers of all stripe. Some Orwell scholars might claim that the title of this website is redundant (since nearly all of Orwell's writings were political) but I deal here with his political observations, not with an appreciation of his literary skills. The works presented here, although written immediately for his own time (specifically the World War II years, 1937-1945) are still in many ways analogous to our current age. I've taken the liberty of adding a few questions at the end of certain passages which may help the modern reader see their relevence to our own time. A few biographical notes about Orwell are in order: First, Orwell identified himself as a Democratic Socialist. Secondly, he died a relatively young man. Orwell was 47 years old when he succumbed to tuberculosis in January 1950. Given the astuteness of his observations on the World War II era, can we even begin to imagine what books he might have written had he lived through the Fifties? What would he have said about the Cold War? Sputnik? Television? The JFK assassination? The Beatles? Vietnam, Watergate, the moon landing? Perhaps, had he lived past the year 1984 itself, might he have commented on the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union? Unfortunately we'll never know.

53. Principles Of Newspeak
The appendix to george orwell's 1984, analyzing totalitarian abuses of language.
http://www.newspeakdictionary.com/ns-prin.html
Home Excerpt from
"The Principles of Newspeak"
An appendix to 1984
Written by : George Orwell in 1948
Newspeak was the official language of Oceania, and had been devised to meet the ideological needs of Ingsoc , or English Socialism. In the year 1984 there was not as yet anyone who used Newspeak as his sole means of communication, either in speech or writing. The leading articles of the Times were written in it, but this was a tour de force which could only be carried out by a specialist, It was expected that Newspeak would have finally superseded Oldspeak (or standard English, as we should call it) by about the year 2050 . Meanwhile, it gained ground steadily, all party members tending to use Newspeak words and grammatical constructions more and more in their everyday speech. The version in 1984, and embodied in the Ninth and Tenth Editions of Newspeak dictionary, was a provisional one, and contained many superfluous words and archaic formations which were due to be suppressed later. It is with the final, perfected version, as embodied in the Eleventh Edition of the dictionary, that we are concerned here.
The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view and mental habits proper to the devotees of IngSoc, but to make all other modes of thought impossible. It was intended that when Newspeak had been adopted once and for all and Oldspeak forgotten, a heretical thought that is, a thought diverging from the principles of IngSoc should be literally unthinkable, at least so far as thought is dependent on words. Its vocabulary was so constructed as to give exact and often very subtle expression to every meaning that a Party member could properly wish to express, while excluding all other meaning and also the possibility of arriving at them by indirect methods. This was done partly by the invention of new words, but chiefly by eliminating undesirable words and stripping such words as remained of unorthodox meanings, and so far as possible of all secondary meaning whatever.

    Orwell, George
The critical essays and reviews that George Orwell (pen name of Eric Arthur Blair) (1903-50) began to publish in the 1930s are not "literary" in the familiar, narrow sense. Part of the politically committed, "semi-sociological" criticism (Orwell's phrase) that rose up in response to fascism and the Great Depression, they posed from the outset the question whether there is anything strictly "aesthetic" in literature that evades social explanation and moral or political evaluation. Moreover, writing for a livelihood in the periodical press, rather than occupying an academic post (he never attended university), Orwell largely wrote about books as they appeared on the market. To him "literary" thus referred to works on many subjects, not just to "imaginative" or "creative" literature. It did not indicate a canon of long-dead masterpieces to be revered and transmitted, but new and revived texts whose current usefulness was always in doubt. Without the institutional commitment to the past as such, a commitment that Matthew Arnold bequeathed to university-based criticism, Orwell could become, paradoxically, just the sort of critic Arnold had imagined, ranging over many fields in order to intervene in the most urgent public debates of his time.
