He has monthly column in the Los Angeles Daily Journal called "Bench Press" and is judicial editor of the court newsletter (a 30-page journal published quarterly). He was also editor of the California Judges Assn. newsletter for four years. In 1984, Greg wrote a political satire (novelette) called "Lenin Lives," published by Stein and Day (New York) in both hard cover and paperback. Burning the Empty Nests is Gregory Orr's earliest full-length collection. Filled with surrealism, these are poems steeped in emotion. Even if you are not quite sure what is going on, Orr's linguistic playfulness and experimentation will move you. A black biplane crashes through the window of the luncheonette. The pilot climbs down, removing his leather hood. He hands me my grandmother's jade ring. No, it's two robin's eggs and a telephone number: yours. There are very few long poems in this collection. But the myriad of short poems are a bit like snow globes in that they present to the reader these tiny, yet fully-developed and contained worlds. Despite the lightness of most of these poems, evidence of Orr's troubled childhood are visible if you know what to look for. When Orr was only twelve years old, he shot and killed his younger brother in a tragic hunting accident. Many poems in his later collections, as well as his memoir, The Blessing , deal directly with this event. But traces of this past are evident in the poems of Burning the Empty Nests I carry you in a glass jar.

The program, presented under the auspices of the Gertrude Clarke Whittall Poetry and Literature Fund, will be at 6:45 p.m. in the Montpelier Room on the sixth floor of the James Madison Memorial Building, 101 Independence Ave., S.E. Tickets are not required. Dorianne Laux, who teaches in the Program in Creative Writing at the University of Oregon, is the author of three collections of poetry: Smoke What We Carry (1994), and Awake (1990), all published by BOA Editions; and a textbook, The Poet's Companion: A Guide to the Pleasures of Writing Poetry , which she wrote with Kim Addonizio (1997). She has participated as a teacher in many community writing programs across the country, as well as at writing festivals and conferences. Her many awards and honors include the Pushcart Prize (1999 and 2000), a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship (1990), a Bread Loaf fellowship as the Margaret Bridgeman Fellow in Poetry (1990), and the 1988 Isabella Gardner Fellowship for Outstanding Young Woman Poet from the MacDowell Colony.

-Chapter 5 - Part 2 Isaac Gregory Mary Gregory , who married -?- Walker, is shown living with her parents in 1850. She has two children, Minerva, age 14, and John, age 10, with her. She was 42 and listed herself as born in South Carolina. The children were born in Alabama. Terrell Gregory (ca. 1811) and his wife, Eleanor Anderson (ca. 1814), lived near Jeremiah and Theresa in St. Clair County, Alabama, in 1850. Both are listed as being South Carolina natives. All their offspring were Alabama natives. They were (ages shown from 1850 census): William I., 17; Thursday M. (Theresa?), 16; Sara T., 13; Jeremiah, 10; James A., 4; and Martha, 2. Theresa (Thursday) Gregory married Francis Marion Little in St. Clair, Alabama, 30 November 1854. This record was derived from St. Clair County Marriage Records ( as listed in the Gandrud Collection, vol. 156, p. 90 - Benton County ISAAC GREGORY, JR. , son of Isaac, grandson of Isaac, married Harriet Johnson. He probably left Union County about 1815. He is lost to follow up. JOHN WESLEY GREGORY (ca. 1791, Union County, S.C. -1869, Pickens County, Ala) was referred to as "Wesley" in Isaac's will.
