Books on Economics
Eat The Rich By P.J. O'Rourke (1998)
Why isn't everybody rich? That's the question that drives libertarian humorist P.J. O'Rourke in his latest book, Eat the Rich. O'Rourke draws on his personal travels to answer, as he puts it, "Why do some places prosper and thrive while others just suck?" O'Rourke seems to be reaching out to an audience beyond his traditional "Republican Party Reptile" (libertarian-ish) readers. By using humor to compare economic systems, O'Rourke tries to soft-sell the free market, arguing that it is the best engine of abundance and human vitality. Most of the book is O'Rourke at his wonderful best. His whirlwind tour of societies from Albanian anarchy to Swedish drabness to Tanzanian emptiness keeps the reader on a roller coaster thrill. O'Rourke's descriptions transport the reader as any good travel writing does, but with the added advantage of having a drunken H.L. Mencken as a traveling companion. In all cases the free market emerges as the winner for creating abundance, and in general a life worth living. After decades of totalitarian communism in Cuba erased such luxuries as cars and gasoline, Cubans were "so used to empty streets that anyone who looked both ways before crossing was probably a paranoid schizophrenic." The Cuban peso is so worthless that even the Cuban government has "dollar stores" that only accept U.S. currency. Outside dollar stores, goods are hard to find. "The Cuban rationing system is simple," says O'Rourke. "They're out of everything."

Guidelines for Bias-Free Writing, by Marilyn Schwartz and the Task Force on Bias-Free Language of the Association of American University Presses A review by P.J. O'Rourke [From The American Spectator August, 1995.] Says the press release that arrived with this volume, "Anyone who spends even a few minutes with the book will be a better writer." And, indeed, I feel a spate of better writing coming on. The pharisaical, malefic, and incogitant Guidelines for Bias-Free Writing is a product of the pointy-headed wowsers at the Association of American University Presses, who in 1987 established a "Task Force on Bias-Free Language" filled with cranks, pokenoses, blow-hards, four-flushers, and pettifogs. The foolish and contemptible product of this seven years wasted in mining the shafts of indignation has been published by that cowbesieged, basketball-sotted sleep-away camp for hick bourgeois offspring, Indiana University, under the aegis of its University Pressa traditional dumping ground for academic deadwood so bereft of talent, intelligence, and endeavor as to be useless even in the dull precincts of Midwestern state college classrooms. But perhaps I'm biased. What, after all, is wrong with a project of this ilk? Academic language is, I guess, supposed to be exact and neutral, a sort of mathematics of ideas, with information recorded in a complete and explicit manner, the record formulated into theories, and attempts made to prove those formulae valid or not. The preface to Guidelines says, "Our aim is simply to encourage sensitivity to usages that may be imprecise, misleading, and needlessly offensive." And few scholars would care to have their usages so viewed, myself excluded.

All the Trouble in the World : The Lighter Side of Overpopulation, Famine, Ecological Disaster, Ethnic Hatred, Plague, and Poverty
    Author Info: P.J. O'Rourke
    [Patrick Jake]
Amidst all the whining, race-baiting, name-calling, and other dishonest defense mechanisms, there's one frequent ploy of the Left that is actually clever : first, they choose to believe in an idealized version of mankind (man as a naturally peaceful and sharing creature), espouse utopian political philosophies based on that fantasy, and advocate a set of egalitarian policy prescriptions which flow from their delusions, and then they have the gall to castigate conservative critics of their foolhardiness by saying that they are attacking straw men. It's kind of like Jimmy Stewart's character, Elwood P. Dowd, turning the tables on his psychiatrists and calling them crazy for bringing up Harvey all the time. Such is the nature of most of the criticism of this very funny book by P. J. O'Rourke, in which he sets out to test big government liberalism by seeing how it is playing out in the real world, on a series of issues : overpopulation, famine, ecological disaster, ethnic hatred, plague and poverty. For making this effort to scientifically test the ideology of the Left, in the laboratory of reality, he has been accused of practically fabricating the issues in order to shoot down their solutions. If only....

    American Spectator's Enemies List
    Author Info: P.J. O'Rourke
    [Patrick Jake]
The American Spectator is sadly gone now (what's left of it is called the American Prowler), a victim of its own overzealous pursuit of President Clinton and its dalliance with the loathsome David Brock. But many of the best writers on the Right once wrote in its pages, among them P. J. O'Rourke. Mr. O'Rourke is one of those writers who entertains us often enough that he can be forgiven for cashing in once in awhile, which is fortunate, because this is only barely a book. It starts with a very funny column, A Call for a New McCarthyism (American Spectator, July 1989), in which he calls for a new blacklist. Unlike the McCarthy era list though : "The distinguishing feature of this cluster of dunces is not subversion but silliness." And rather than barring these dunces from working and trying to hush up their views, he has the more diabolical idea of exposing them and their ideas to the harsh light of day : [T]he worst punishment for dupes, pink-wieners, and dialectical immaterialists might be a kind of reverse blacklist. We don't prevent them

O’Rourke has established himself as America’s premier political satirist. O’Rourke is known as a hard-bitten, cigar-smoking conservative. In fact, he bashes all political persuasions. O'Rourke the American political satirist P.J. O'Rourke recently published Age And Guile , which gathers together previously uncollected material spanning his 25 years of journalism. PJ has built his merciless literary reputation on three things: irritating American liberals, abusing chemicals and visiting every warzone in the world. Usually all at the same time. As he puts it, "I deal with curses of Western society of the past two hundred years starting with the French Revolution. I don't start with the American Revolution for the simple reason it wasn't a revolution. It was some form of parliamentary disagreement, who's in charge here, sort of thing." So you've never tried to keep pace pharmaceutically with Hunter S. Thompson, your long-time friend and political sparring partner? Medical textbooks are being written about that man's constitution... "Hunter's very shy. People don't really understand that. He has to get loaded to deal with strangers, he can't do it otherwise. He takes on that gonzoid persona as a kind of armour against the world. I watch other people gonzoing around, I don't so much do it myself. Hunter's very funny if you know him, because after he's done all those appalling things, wrecking all the furniture and scaring everyone out of the room and terrorising the place, he turns round and says, "Do you think they were upset? Did I embarrass anyone?" "No, you just set fire to the rug..."
