WHEN ALLEN GINSBERG arrived in San Francisco in August 1954, the famed San Francisco poetry scene was thriving with such luminaries as Kenneth Rexroth, Robert Duncan, and William Everson. Ginsberg's recitation of Howl in November 1955, at the Six Gallery, galvanized that community and brought the Beat aesthetic to the West Coast: this signaled an era that would become known as the San Francisco Renaissance. A number of the younger poets followed Ginsberg's example and began producing poetry that owed more to the Beat experience of New York than to the older, established poets of San Francisco.
First Poem
Peter Orlovsky
ALLEN GINSBURG MET twenty-year-old Peter Orlovsky within a year of his arrival in San Francisco, and the two quickly became inseparable. Orlovsky traveled with Ginsberg to Tangiers to help Burroughs work on Naked Lunch and accompanied him on subsequent journeys to India, Nepal, and Japan. Peter Orlovsky, like his New York counterparts, Cassady, Huncke, and Solomon, contributed more to the Beat movement through his presence than from his actual literary output.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti
LAWRENCE FERLINGHETTI ATTENDED Columbia University at the same time as Allen Ginsberg and Jack Keroauc, but apparently never made their acquaintance. He shared with them a love of avant-garde literature, travel to exotic places, and libertarian pacifist politics; but he never identified himself as a Beat. In 1953 Ferlinghetti, with Peter D. Martin, founded a bookstore in San Francisco that sold only paperbacks called City Lights (after Charlie Chaplin's movie of the same name). After buying out Martin in 1955, Ferlinghetti began publishing a series of avant-garde poetry and fiction under the imprint of City Lights Books. Howl by Allen Ginsberg was number four in the series and became City Lights Books' first major success. A highly successful poet himself, Ferlinghetti published most of the influential Beat writers, including Kerouac, Burroughs, Corso, Snyder, Di Prima, and Jones.

Nyitray March 2002 [Introduction] [Collection Note] [Box and Folder Listing] Introduction return to top Acclaimed poet Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) was born in Newark, N.J. and was raised in Paterson, N.J., where his father, Louis Ginsberg, himself a poet, taught high school English. Allen Ginsberg's mother was confined for years in a mental hospital. He mourned for her in his long poem titled Kaddish (1961). In 1943, while attending Columbia University, Ginsberg befriended Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs, who later established themselves as significant contributors to the Beat Movement. After leaving Columbia in 1948, Mr. Ginsberg traveled widely and worked at a number of jobs, including cafeteria floor mopper to market researcher. In 1956, Allen Ginsberg's first published book of poetry

It's The Arnold Show
by Scott Orlovsky
October 6, 2003 We witnessed a rare event in the California recall election debates on September 24, 2003, as gubernatorial candidates from the Green, Democrat, and Republican parties, and an Independent, were given equal time to voice their political, economic, and social platforms to a national audience. Outside of the scripted catch-phrase one-liners and personal character jousts, viewers participated in an intelligent and civil form of direct democracy as they listened to opinions on major policy issues from voices representing a broad band of the socio-political spectrum.
However, before people had time to sit and think, and weigh the estimations of Mr. Camejo, Mr. Bustamante, Mr. McClintock, Ms. Huffington, and Mr. Schwarzenegger, MSNBC, FoxNews, and CNN jumped in to think for many Americans in the elitist carnival those same many misinterpret as fair and balanced news reporting.
Before the anchors at these stations placed Republican candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger in the spotlight and rated his performance on a scale of 1-10, CNN handed the Austrian-born actor a live propaganda conference to have the last word with voters, a despicable tactic not offered to the other candidates and worth millions of dollars in free publicity. Arnold captured the moment to reiterate a few inane platitudes such as "I'm going to bring the economy back" and "I am not only the Terminator but the Collectinator." He also strategically invited McClintock, his Republican antagonist, into his government in Sacramento if he gets elected. And he even had time to guffaw at Ariana Huffington when he said that she is "entertaining" and a "comedy show."

78. Peter Case - Journal
After that, everything changed. Allen Ginsberg and peter orlovsky came out. Allenwould make up songs on the corner, Play some country blues he d request.
http://www.petercase.com/journal/journal.htm
Where were you in 1974?
1974 was the year I started getting proficient at "living on the street". I had come west on the Greyhound from Buffalo, New York in early 73,a young acid casualty looking for someplace to land...Got off the bus one morning at the foot of Mission Street, in San Francisco, and dove in. I was 19, hair down to my shoulders, and playing a cheap Japanese guitar (the Yamaki deluxe:$99.95: it had a rockin' buzz to it). I was carrying a fork in my coat pocket, in case I ran into dinner somewhere. I was drinking THE WINE, as it would come to be known in numerous songs of the day.
Today it's called "homeless", but that term never occurred to me at the time. I was "on the street", a street singer, crashin around, a wanderer...that was my deal through '73,'74, and into '75. It came naturally, and SF was a good place for it.
'74: the last gasp of the '60s. After that, everything changed.
