Peter Orlovsky, poet, musician, farmer, teacher, and companion of poet Allen Ginsberg , was born July 8, 1933, on the Lower East Side of New York City to Oleg and Katherine Orlovsky, one of five children who grew up in the Northport section of Long Island, New York.
When he was still a teen, his parents separated after a series of failed business ventures and bouts with alcoholism. Orlovsky moved to Queens with his mother and siblings. Orlovsky dropped out of school in his senior year and began supporting himself at age 17 due to family economic problems. After many odd jobs, he began working as an orderly at Creedmore State Mental Hospital in New York giving him an opportunity to complete the requirements for a high school diploma. In 1953, Orlovsky was drafted into the military as the Korean War began. Due to his erratic behavior and conspicuous anti-military sentiments at boot camp, army psychiatrists ordered his transfer. He spent the rest of his military service as a medic in a San Francisco hospital.

Peter Orlovsky was staying with painter Robert LaVigne in San Francisco in 1954 when Allen Ginsberg dropped by for a visit. The two fell together almost instantly, and remained a couple for three decades. Their relationship had rocky periods and was never monogamous (Peter Orlovsky had heterosexual leanings, for one thing), but it apparently survived, as a close and important friendship at least, until Ginsberg's death. The relationship apparently provided enormous inspiration for Ginsberg, and the two were inseperable for much of the 50's, 60's and 70's. Orlovsky has written and performed his own poetry, though he never fully established a literary identity for himself that transcended his status as Ginsberg's lover. His poems have a charm and a certain logic, though, and his legacy may someday find its own enthusiastic fan club. He can be seen romping in a meditation circle with Ginsberg, Mick Ronson, Roger McGuinn and many others in Bob Dylan's great but difficult-to-find 1997 movie 'Renaldo and Clara.' Literary Kicks

Peter Orlovsky was staying with painter Robert LaVigne in San Francisco in 1954 when Allen Ginsberg dropped by for a visit. The two fell together almost instantly, and remained a couple for three decades. Their relationship had rocky periods and was never monogamous (Peter Orlovsky had heterosexual leanings, for one thing), but it survived, as a close and important friendship at least, until Ginsberg's death. The relationship provided enormous inspiration for Ginsberg, and the two were inseperable for much of the 50's, 60's and 70's. Orlovsky has written and performed his own poetry, though he never fully established a literary identity for himself that transcended his status as Ginsberg's lover. Interestingly, one of his biggest fans seemed to be Jack Kerouac , whose letters contain many admiring comments about Orlovsky's work (as well as a personal respect for him that is uncharacteristic for the curmudgeonly Kerouac). Orlovsky's poems do have a definite charm and a certain logic, and his legacy may someday find a larger fan club. Peter Orlovsky shows up as Simon Darlovsky in Kerouac's novel 'Desolation Angels'. In the novel, as in real life, he often travels with one or both of his demented but sweet-tempered brothers, Julius and Lafcadio Orlovsky (in the novel, Lazarus Darlovsky).

Tharmas: the Physical Poetry of Peter Orlovsky
by Kirby Olson, Ph.D.
To the Puritan Pilgrims who founded America, Peter Orlovsky might appear to be the beast from the Bible, but Orlovsky is a pilgrim in his own right, if we begin with the premise that the body is as important as spirit, and that the body is a new world waiting to be discovered. Allen Ginsberg's boyfriend for several decades, Orlovsky's one volume of verse, published in the late 1970s, is a hymn to a kind of physical life which was glorified and exemplified by the hippies, and perhaps taken to its highest poetic incarnation in the work of Orlovsky.
, with its naked celebration of the physical aspect of life, such as in these lines: "There aren't maney people in the world this summer
who can boast working tan assed man on the job
nailing roff on
painting rafter beams waterproof
a wooden jem retreat meditation little house
we built in Sierra Nevadas
the sun gave me a warm kiss
on the center of my ass hole
wile bending deep down doing some funny work" (lines from "Good Fuck With Denise," in CA Poems 115-116).

Biographical Sketch
Allen Ginsberg, American poet and one of the founders of the Beat movement, was born in 1926, the second son of Louis and Naomi Ginsberg. His father was an English teacher, a poet, and a socialist; his mother was a communist and an active member in the Party; both were children of Russian-Jewish immigrants. Naomi also suffered from paranoid delusions and Ginsberg often stayed home from school to take care of her during her depressions. She entered several institutions for varying lengths of time and eventually had to be permanently committed. The experience of watching the decline of his mother's mental health made Ginsberg very sensitive to and uniquely qualified to deal throughout his life with people of varying mental states. A good student despite his difficulties at home, Ginsberg entered Columbia in 1943 as a pre-law student, but with a strong interest in poetry. He contributed frequently to various student publications. He was expelled for one year in 1945 after he scrawled obscene phrases in the dust on his dorm window and was subsequently found in bed with Jack Kerouac. The issue of homosexuality was not brought up at his disciplinary hearing with the Dean, rather he was fined for having an unregistered overnight guest and for the obscenities, and expelled for one year in the hope that he might mature enough to continue his education.
