O'Neill, Eugene Gladstone (1888-1953), American dramatist, Nobel laureate, winner of four Pulitzer Prizes, who attempted to define fundamental human problems in his works. He is considered by many to be the most important writer in the American theater. O'Neill was born in New York City, the son of the Irish-American actor James O'Neill. He accompanied his father on theatrical tours during his youth, attended Princeton University from 1906 to 1907, and worked subsequently as a clerk in New York City. From 1909 to 1912 O'Neill prospected for gold in Honduras, served as assistant manager of a theatrical troupe organized by his father, went to South America and South Africa as a seaman, toured as an actor with his father's troupe, and worked as a newspaper reporter in New London, Connecticut. After contracting a mild case of tuberculosis in 1912, he went to a sanatorium, where he wrote his first plays. After leaving the sanatorium, O'Neill studied the techniques of playwriting at Harvard University from 1914 to 1915 under the famous theater scholar George Pierce Baker.

things? I sometimes think that the United States for this reason is the greatest failure the world has ever seen. eugene O NEILL.
http://www.geocities.com/snoopythewriter/ONEILL.html
None of us can help the things life has done to us. They're done before you realize it, and once they're done they make you do other things until at last everything comes between you and what you'd like to be, and you have lost your true self forever.
The past is the present, isn't it? It's the future, too. We all tried to lie out of that but life won't let us.
We talk about the American Dream, and want to tell the world about the American Dream, but what is that Dream, in most cases, but the dream of material things? I sometimes think that the United States for this reason is the greatest failure the world has ever seen. EUGENE O'NEILL

He won the Pulitzer Prize four times, for Beyond the Horizon Anna Christie Strange Interlude (1928) and Long Day's Journey Into Night (published posthumously in 1956), which also won the New York Drama Critics' Award for best American play. O'Neill became a major influence on the development of the modern American theatre by exploring difficult subjects and experimenting with dramatic styles. He was influenced by the Greek tragedies, by Ibsen and Strindberg. Mourning Becomes Electra (1931) was a reworking of Aeschylus' Oresteia in the context of the American Civil War. Long Day's Journey Into Night and The Iceman Cometh (1946) were written whilst O'Neill was suffering from Parkinson's Disease and alcoholism.

He attended a Catholic boarding school and a preparatory school in Connecticut, when not travelling around with his actor parents. He enrolled at Princeton for a year, 1906-7, then held a series of jobs. These included secretarial work in New York, gold prospecting in Honduras in 1909 where he contracted malaria, assistant manager in his father's company, journalist, and seaman on a freighter to Buenos Aires and later on the New York-Southampton run. In 1912, after an unsuccessful marriage, he attempted suicide and spent six months in a sanitorium recovering from TB. At this time he realised he wanted to be a writer. His first plays were staged by the Provincetown Players. He also helped in managing the Greenwich Village Theatre (1923-7), but became increasingly absorbed by his writing. Named and shamed
Mayo 13, 2004 Here's a meme that's been doing the rounds recently. Out of a particular list (see below) of classic novels, exactly how few have you actually read? Honestly now. "Studying" the novel at school doesn't count, because as every fule kno, you just get the video out, innit, and don't bother actually reading the thing. The books I have read are in bold (in the exztended entry): Beowulf
Achebe, Chinua - Things Fall Apart
Agee, James - A Death in the Family
Austen, Jane - Pride and Prejudice
Baldwin, James - Go Tell It on the Mountain
Beckett, Samuel - Waiting for Godot
Bellow, Saul - The Adventures of Augie March
Brontë, Charlotte - Jane Eyre
Brontë, Emily - Wuthering Heights
Camus, Albert - The Stranger no, but I have read 'Nausea'
Cather, Willa - Death Comes for the Archbishop Chaucer, Geoffrey - The Canterbury Tales Chekhov, Anton - The Cherry Orchard Chopin, Kate - The Awakening Conrad, Joseph - Heart of Darkness Cooper, James Fenimore - The Last of the Mohicans Crane, Stephen - The Red Badge of Courage

The Travels of Marco Polo , dictated by Polo several years after his return from decades in the land of Kublai Khan, became an influential book in Renaissance Europe though some publishers were so dubious of the hyperbole that they titled the book, "The Million Lies." The path to Xanadu led to New York via Eugene O'Neill: his Marco Millions opened on Broadway, this day in 1928.
