Omar Khayyam the Mathematician
He was famous during his lifetime as a mathematician and astronomer who calculated how to correct the Persian calendar. On March 15, 1079, Sultan Jalal al-Din Malekshah Saljuqi (1072-1092) put Omar's corrected calendar into effect, as in Europe Julius Caesar had done in 46 B.C. with the corrections of Sosigenes , and as Pope Gregory XIII would do in February 1552 with Aloysius Lilius ' corrected calendar(although Britain would not switch from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar until 1751, and Russia would not switch until 1918). He is also well known for inventing the method of solving cubic equation s by intercepting a parabola with a circle

- Return to top of the page - Our Assessment: B- : while perhaps truer to Khayyam, this translation is uneven and not entirely satisfactory. See our review for fuller assessment. The complete review 's Review The Ruba'iyat of Omar Khayyam is generally known in the translation(s) created by Edward FitzGerald in the nineteenth century. It is generally acknowledged that, for all their capturing the spirit of Khayyam's originals and so on, they are not truly faithful to the Persian verses. In addition, FitzGerald worked from a specific manuscript, which included verses that are now considered certainly not to have been by Khayyam. In an attempt to offer a truer picture of Khayyam's poetry Peter Avery and John Heath-Stubbs presented this version in 1979 (now available as a Penguin Classics paperback). It differs from FitzGerald's in that it contains considerably more verses (235 quatrains, as opposed to less than half as many in Fitz's versions), that the order differs (making comparison difficult), and that they try to be more faithful to the original Persian. This book also offers a thirty page introduction by Peter Avery, addressing many of the questions about the ruba'i form, Omar Khayyam, and his times, though many questions we had remained unanswered there. In particular, there is little explanation of their differences with FitzGerald, which we would have found useful.

The Rubaiyat and Paramahansa Yogananda's Commentary
Many who read form wrong opinions.
HERE IS a condensed version of a series of essays that took a look into the Persian poem Rubaiyat (or Rubaiyyat) by Omar Khayyam (he died in AD 1122) through a rendering (by Edward FitzGerald) and a commentary (by Paramahansa Yogananda), and a translation by the eminent Robert Graves and Omar Ali-Shah.
Many who read the FitzGerald rendering form wrong opinions due to it. What did Yogananda do? He asserted: Omar, by a very large number of Western readers, has come to be regarded as a rather erotic pagan poet, a drunkard interested only in wine and earthly pleasure. This is typical . . . [ Link My presence here has been no choice of mine;
Fate hounds me most unwillingly away.
Rise, wrap a cloth around your loins, my Saki,
And swill away the misery of this world. [ Graves and Shah, What, without asking, hither hurried whence?

Apoio cultural A TRADUÇO DA TRADUÇO DA TRADUÇO DA TRADUÇO Alfredo Braga Noite, silêncio, folhas imóveis; imóvel o meu pensamento. Onde estás, tu que me ofereceste a taça? Hoje caiu a primeira pétala.

The Rubaiyat of omar khayyam. Quality of Poetry. Poetry is nothingbut right words in right place. But Khayyam. omar khayyam s Poetry.
http://pachome1.pacific.net.sg/~makhdoom/ruba1.html
The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
Quality of Poetry Poetry is nothing but right words in right place. But, it is much more than mere words - it is food for the soul and a fire that keeps eternally burning at the gateway of love. It has touched my soul as well, as it has touched countless others' all over this kingdom of God. The people need poetry that will be their own secret to keep them awake forever, and bathe them in the bright-haired wave of its breathing. Poetry can communicate the actual quality of experience with a subtlety and precision unapproachable by any other means. But, if the poetry and the intelligence of the age lose touch with each other, poetry will cease to matter much and the age will be lacking in finer awareness. When power narrows the areas of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, potery cleanses. Poetry is not concerned with telling with telling people what to do, but with extending our knowledge of good and evil, perhaps making the necessity for action more urgent and its nature more clear, but only leading us to the point where it is possible for us to make a rational and moral choice. Poetry keeps people alive, because poetry itself lives - it has a life of its own. It has an extra hand, which can caress or tickle. This hand can even clench and fight. The hand is hot! Take it or leave it.
