The Omar Khayyam is a correspondence chapter of STARFLEET: The International Star Trek Fan Association. We are home-ported in Watertown, Massachussetts, and are part of STARFLEET's Region Fifteen. As a correspondence chapter, the crew of the Omar Khayyam perform most of their duties through the Internet. Hakim Omar Khayyam Iranians used to praise AHURA MAZDA, during their prayers in about 2500 years ago, for the enjoyment granted to them. This enjoyment-loving became a secondary nature and as a part of Iranian habitudes. But due to wars imposed to Iran and the influence of Greek Philosophy, such enjoyment-seeking morale mixed with grief and pain, manifested eventually in eternal Quatrains of OMAR KHAYYAM (about l048-1123) of Nishabour-Khorasan, Iran. Although Khayyam is considered to be a pessimist poet, like most Iranian poets, to Khayyam, it has a high philosophical aspect. On one hand, his thoughts are always mixed with sorrow, grief, death and annihilation, and at the same time, he invited human beings to happiness and enjoyment. "Let us be happy, Time is passing by. There is no return, when you go, you are gone." We observe such reflection at Hafez Poems about 250 years after Khayyam, as well. Edward Fitzgerald (1809-1883), of BRITAIN was the first who keenly and sharply found that Khayyam's Quatrains would reflect the common spritual needs of human beings. By receiving inspiration from the quatrains, he published 75 Rubaiys, at London, for the first time, without mentioning the name of the translator. At first no one paid much attention to it, but later on, when the scholars discovered the philosophical and literary values, the public paid a welcoming attention as well, praising the totality, comprehensiveness of Khayyam thoughts and elequence of Fitzgerald. The Second, third and fourth editions of the book were sold as if they were precious jewels, bringing about the worldwide fame.

The Rubayyat of Omar Khayyam The character of Safar Timura is loosely based on Omar Khayyam, the ancient Persian poet and astronomer. The son of a tentmaker, Khayyam rose to become the chief astrologer of the sultan, his boyhood friend. Just as Safar, the son of a potter, rose to become the chief wazier of the king, his boyhood friend. Khayyam (A.D. 1044-1123) is best known to us today for his poetry, collected in the remarkable "Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam." Of all the many English translations of this work, I prefer Edward Fitzgerald’s. For the edification of my readers, I offer all of Khayyam's remarkable poetry below. If you want to buy it in book form - which I highly reccommend, most editons will cost you less than six dollars. But, more about Omar: Students of mathematical history also know him as a pioneer in algebra and geometry. Experts say his mathematical discoveries remained unmatched for centuries - to the time of Descartes(A.D. 1596-1650). I first came across "The Rubaiyat" in a bazaar when I was a boy living on the island of Cyprus. Battered and torn, I only paid a few pennies for it. But the first words I read tumbled out like upturned chests of gold: "Awake! for the morning in the bowl of night Has flung the stone that puts the stars to flight. And lo! the hunter of the east has caught The sultan’s turret in a noose of light."

Glossary entry for Khayyam, Omar Khayyam, Omar Omar Khayyam was a twelfth-century mathematician, astronomer and teacher from Nishapur in Persia. He was also a poet, the author of numerous rhymed quatrains or four line poems, a verse form called in Persian "rubai". These four-lines epigrams were brought together in collections called Rubaiyat. Over 700 years later, in 1857, one such Omar manuscript came into the hands of Edward FitzGerald, who made from it one of the most popular poems in the English language. Experts have argued at great length whether FitzGerald's adaptation of Omar's poem is a faithful translation, but no one argues its beauty. The themes are earthy, yet infused with speculations on man's spiritual destiny. Perhaps the strong feeling of "Carpe Diem" or "seize the day"-motifs explains Van Morrison's attraction to these poems. After all he writes elsewhere: These are the days now that we must savour And we must enjoy as we can These are the days that will last forever You've got to hold them in your heart This echoes some of the sentiments in The Rubaiyat, as in these stanzas:
