    CHARLES OLSON
Más szóval, mi magunk egyszerre vagyunk mind a felfedezés, mind a meghatározás eszköze.

Project 1: Charles Olson, an example of the Avant-Garde spirit? by Nicholas Cappas [Coverpage] Cappas 2 Charles Olson makes for an interesting study. After hearing his name mentioned in some postmodern circles, I became curious about his poetry. Reaching for Rothenberg's Poems For the Millenium, I hedged my bets that there ought to at least be some representation of his work. Rothenberg and Joris sought poetry and art that were used as agents of change within society. In their own words, they attempted to assemble a global anthology of twentieth-century modernism with "an emphasis on those international and national movements that have tried to change the direction of poetry and art as a necessary condition for changing the ways in which we think and act as human beings" (Rothenberg 2) Relaxing with my shoes kicked off and my feet up on a chair, I turned on Enya's first song "Watermark". The sun was shining and managed to make its way through the window. I was ready to let Postmodern Poetry "sweep through my body like the wind" as Cappas 3 I wrote in my journal that morning (or at least something similar to that effect). Finally I turned to page seven hundred seventy-five and read the first few lines of "The Song of Ullikummi" :

    Classroom Issues and Strategies
It will be most practical to approach Olson after some detailed work with poems by Eliot Ezra Pound , and William Carlos Williams . Despite many stylistic similarities, Olson's poetic "enactment" dictates a different kind of progression and a different use of literary and other allusions. The teacher might suggest that the formalist concept of a "speaker" or "protagonist" (a character in a poetic drama outside of which the poem's maker is imagined to stand) might be replaced by the poet himself in the act of writing (a self-reflexive Charles Olson in the drama of making this poem). Although Pound's Pisan Cantos , Eliot's Four Quartets , and Williams's Paterson are partially amenable to this approach, Olson commits himself to it more fully in both shorter and longer forms. His abstract style, his refusal to commit himself to the modernist "image," may also be a difficulty. The student can be reminded that all speech, all thought, even an "image," is the result of an abstractive process. Olson characteristically works with syntax and conceptual reference that are "in process"often fragmentary, self-revising, incrementalas he struggles to "say" what is adequate to his present (and always changing) moment. Comparisons with Robert Creeley's often abstract and stammering forward motion may be illuminating.
