    1. Charles Olson Collection
Charles Olson lived from 1910-1970. He was quite possibly one of the most influential American poets of the 1950s and 1960s, known mostly for, "The Kingfishers," and the Maximus poems (a work at least equal in scope to Pound's Cantos ).He is also intimately associated with the legacy of the Black Mountain College, where he taught from 1948 until the school's close in 1956.
Olson's reputation has suffered in recent years, possibly for two reasons. First, he is a complex poet, and the reader is forced to confront the massive scope of Olson's intellect. Secondly, though Olson was one of the first poets to describe his work as "Postmodern," he really hadn't drifted that far from Pound's Modernism, and perhaps his work was dismissed by later critics who couldn't fit Olson into their schemata of cultural history.
Charles Olson taught briefly at UCONN before his death, and bequeathed all of his papers to the library. Extensive manuscript materials exist, and Olson left copious (though hard to decipher) marginal notes on many of the books in his personal library.
For any English grad. student looking to do firsthand work with poetic manuscript materials and to study the "process" of poetry, the Olson collection is an invaluable resource. The Dodd Center also has a good deal of Olson material and correspondence pertaining to Black Mountain College, an experimental farming Community/arts college that flourished briefly in North Carolina. The library also holds the papers of Joel Oppenheimer, one of Olson's students at Black Mountain College.

Add to a Notebook Charles Olson Charles Olson, the son of Karl Joseph Olson, a postman, and Mary Hines, was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1910. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Wesleyan University. Olson taught English for two years at Clark University then entered Harvard University in 1936, where he completed coursework for a Ph.D. in American civilization. By the age of twenty-nine, he had received his first Guggenheim fellowship for his studies of Herman Melville . Rather than pursuing an academic career, Olson became active in depression era politics. He served as the assistant chief of the foreign language section of the Office of War Information (OWI). In 1941, he began to live with Constance Wilcock in a common-law marriage; they had one child. In 1944, Olson became disillusioned with the OWI over an issue of censorship. To more fully dedicate himself to his writing, he left his job and moved to Key West, Florida, in 1945. He published his influential essay "Projective Verse" in 1950; among other things, the essay posited that poetry should embody the rhythms of natural breath and thought. Olson claimed "a poem is energy transferred from where the poet got it . . . by way of the poem itself to, all the way over to, the reader . . ." In 1951, Olson was hired as a visiting professor at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. He would eventually succeed the artist Josef Albers to become the school's rector.
