(Used in Dr. Bollinger's class) The Climax of "I Want You Women Up North to Know"
Lines 85-97 of Tillie Olsen's first published poem "I Want You Women Up North to Know" contain the climactic turning point of this poem, and the language and form reflect this change. Instead of being humble and disjointed victims who remain mostly anonymous, the workers are transformed into an angry and unified group of distinct individuals. This shift in mood is accomplished by three devices: imagery, grouping, and capitalization of proper names. The imagery in this passage helps turn the tone of the poem from victimization to anger. In addition to fire images, the overall language is completely stripped down to bare ugliness. In previous lines, the sordidness has been intermixed with cheerful euphemisms: the agonizing work is an "exquisite dance" (24); the trembling hands are "white gulls" (22); the cough is "gay" (25). But in these later lines, all aesthetically pleasing terms vanish, leaving "sweet and …blood" (85), "naked… [and]…bony children" (89), and a "skeleton body" (95). Another way this passage turns the mood of the poem is by using grouping and form to link the workers together, both in inference and appearance. Previously, each worker’s situation has been treated as an isolated story, literally separated from the others by a blank line. However, lines 85-97 are crowded together without spaces, suggesting unity by the very appearance of the lines. All of the grievances are briefly repeated, and then a sequence of "ands" binds the one-sentence recaps together. Yet in spite of this sense of solidarity, each person’s story is given its own sentence with a period boundary, subtly emphasizing their individual importance: solidarity is acceptable, but anonymity is not.

Youngest of 13 children of poor Protestant parents (8 died in infancy). Grew up frail and undernourished in appalling Dublin slums. His schooling was hampered by eye disease. Didn't read properly until 13. Early working life as casual road labourer. Learnt Gaelic. Became active trade unionist. Helped organise Irish Citizen Army (1914) incl its constitution. Took part in the Easter Uprising (1916). Viewed as cantankerous idealist. Wrote 3 plays which were rejected by Abbey Theatre. Fourth - 'The Shadow of a Gunman' - produced 1923 - about residents of tenement during an Irish rebellion, as was 'Juno and the Paycock' (1924). 'The Plough and the Stars' (1926) caused a riot because of its alleged unpatriotic portrayal of events of 1916. Its reception prompted O'Casey to move to England. Later plays incl anti-war, anti-clerical and Socialist ideals - but didn't have the same power as those written in his home country. Also wrote several autobiographical books. [CGEL, RE, DWB]

Peacework has been published monthly since 1972, intended to serve as a source of dependable information to those who strive for peace and justice and are committed to furthering the nonviolent social change necessary to achieve them. Rooted in Quaker values and informed by AFSC experience and initiatives, Peacework offers a forum for organizers, fostering coalition-building and teaching the methods and strategies that work in the global and local community. Peacework seeks to serve as an incubator for social transformation, introducing a younger generation to a deeper analysis of problems and issues, reminding and re-inspiring long-term activists, encouraging the generations to listen to each other, and creating space for the voices of the disenfranchised. Views expressed are those of the authors, not necessarily of the AFSC.

Earlier today you said that Henry Roth misconstrued-or distorted, I think you said-the reality of the Thirties as far as the "silencing" influence of the Communist Party on him was concerned. You said that you disagree with that.

Well, I did not express myself with clarity then, if I used only the word "distorted." Because I have no doubt that he speaks with absolute integrity: that's how he looks back on how he lived the time. I am being rather circular in speaking about this. I've only had a chance to skim quickly this piece in The New Yorker that appeared recently, in which he spoke with such vehement bitterness and sorrow about all those lost years that were lost, he felt, in which be attempted to please what he understood was the way he should be writing-a way that was not at all natural to him, or had to do with what he most needed to say, and credited his years of silence and the loss to us, to the treatment that he felt Call It Sleep bad received. Tillie Olsen TILLIE OLSEN is the highly praised author of Tell Me a Riddle Silences , and Yonnondio . She is a Nebraska native (born in 1912 or 1913) who began writing in the 1930s. The necessity of raising and supporting four children through "everyday jobs" silenced her for twenty years. Public libraries were her college. Among the colleges where she has taught or been writer-in-residence are Amherst College, Stanford University, MIT, and Kenyon College. She is the recipient of five honorary degrees, National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, the O Henry Award for best short story, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Her Afterword to Rebecca Harding Davis's Life in the Iron Mills is a moving account of her commitment to labor issues and feminist values. Regarded as one of the earliest spokesperson's for the women's movement, she has said, "Be critical. Women have the right to say: This is surface, this falsifies reality, this degrades." She was raised in the Russian Jewish and Socialist community in Omaha and now lives in Berkeley. (short bio courtesy of Nebraska Center for Writers

MLA Style The MLA style of writing was developed by the Modern Language Association to provide writers with standard writing guidelines. A complete MLA stylebook like the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (Gibaldi) provides a complete guide to writing according to MLA style. This handout provides information on the MLA style of documentation. Documentation is information about outside sources that writers have used in their papers. The sources can be books, magazines, interviews, the World Wide Web, etc. The main purpose of documentation is to help readers locate and judge the original source(s) of information. This handout contains information on documenting or citing sources in the paper and in the “Works Cited.” Examples are written in italics
    In-text citations
An in-text citation identifies within the paper where you are using another’s words, facts or or ideas and from what part of the source they come. In-text documentation should be brief, including only what is necessary to identify the source in the list of works cited. It may include one or more of the following: 1 – the author’s last name

Lost and Found in Space: Using Tillie Olsen's "I Stand Here Ironing" to Encourage Resistance and Identification in the Introductory Literature Classroom
    by Linda Cullum
"Dead, but still with us, still with us, but dead."
    The Dead Father

    by Donald Barthelme

The opening words of Barthelme's The Dead Father describe the great paternal figure of Modernism as he is dragged to his grave. They describe also the apprehensive and passive attitudes that students, weighed down by a conventional pedagogy that has denied them access to their own unique and valid responses to literature and the world around them, drag into introductory literature classrooms. In this essay, I discuss my efforts to invigorate my introductory literature students and to draw them into a more active relationship with texts and with one another by using the feminist teaching and learning strategies of resistance and identification. Specifically, I focus on the methods and results of one such activity in which students read Tillie Olsen's "I Stand Here Ironing" resistively, in search of what seems missing from the story, and then participated in the construction of new meaning by contributing their own "additions" to the text. My challenge in my introductory literature classes is to counter years of exposure to the conventional pedagogy that privileges the authority of the text and teacher by creating a classroom environment in which the text is only one among many potential sites of meaning and my voice as teacher is softened so that it is only one possible response. I do this to encourage students to shift their own reading stance from that of passive acceptance to active production of meaning and to respect both their own constructions and those of the other class members.
