HISTORY OF UNITED WAY OF OLMSTED COUNTY
United Way of Olmsted County began as the Community Chest of Rochester , which was organized at a joint meeting of the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs at the Arthur Hotel on October 29, 1925. The first campaign raised $26,727. Funds were allocated to the Boy Scouts of America, Gamehaven Council, Civic League Day Nursery, American Red Cross, YWCA, The Salvation Army, Rochester Athletic Association and the Rochester City Band. The stated purpose of the Community Chest was “to seek to harmonize the efforts of civic, charitable and philanthropic organizations for the sake of civic unity and greater efficiency.” In May of 1962 the Community Chest reorganized and changed its name to the United Fund of Greater Rochester . Its first campaign produced $68,307. Nearly ten years later on February 15, 1972 the membership unanimously adopted the name of United Way of Olmsted County, Inc. Now past its seventy-fifth year

Circle Celebrations: Olmsted's Corridor of Light Along Richmond Avenue
West Side Neighborhoods United and Beautified with Completion of Circles WHAT : Celebration of newly completed Olmsted Circles along Richmond Avenue WHEN : Friday, November 1, beginning at 4:45 p.m. WHERE : 4:45 p.m. Ferry Circle at Richmond Ave., 5:10 p.m. Symphony Circle WHY PRESENTED BY : The Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy and the City of Buffalo Completion of a decade long project was heralded today when Buffalo Mayor Anthony M. Masiello, along with the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy, Richmond Neighborhood Community Association and Symphony Circle Steering Committee unveiled the newly installed center lighting located in the two newly restored Olmsted Circles along Richmond Avenue. "Many people have waited a long time for this day and the glow of these spectacular lights brings a deep sense of pride to this neighborhood and the city as a whole." said Mayor Masiello referring to the historically restored Olmsted-designed West Ferry and Symphony Circles. "Had it not been for the true dedication and tireless effort of community members, these beautiful Circles would not be here today." The Olmsted Circles on Richmond Ave., (also known as roundabouts,) were part of Buffalo's original 1868 parkway design and built in the 1870s (Symphony) and 1890s (Ferry). They were designed as a way to bring an ornamental green space complemented with a 16-foot high lamp standard into an urban area and to guide travelers along the route of Olmsted's parkway as it weaves through the heart of Buffalo. Both the Ferry and Symphony Circle center islands and ornate light fixtures were removed in 1938 in preparation for what was to be an extension of Richmond Avenue easterly to the waterfront, which never took place. The "Corridor of Light" ceremony is the culmination of many years of volunteer research into what the roadway looked like over a hundred years ago when first designed by America's greatest landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted.

ENTIRE POPULATION OF IRAQ WIPED OUT: I get this number by taking the Iraqi claim of 250 civilian casualties, which I just heard on Fox, and then multiplying it by the Marc Herold polypseudomathicator. . . . UPDATE: Actually, as H.D. Miller points out, even Marc Herold can't seem to spin this into a massacre: So, one is left with the conclusion that if even Marc Herold can produce a credible number of no more than 8 civilian deaths, after three days of intense warfare, then American forces are certainly taking extreme care in conducting this war. And, unfortunately for Marc Herold and company, the point is also proven that when you're forced to use real numbers in your statistics you often end up making the case for the very people and causes you vociferously oppose. The Country in the City olmsted s Centennial Survival (barely). how about the woodlands, the general plantings, the maintenance? asks one olmsted activist.

The Country in the City: Olmsted's Centennial Survival (barely)
By Jane Holtz Kay "OLMSTED: NOW MORE Than Ever," announced one of many recent anniversary events celebrating the work, the man, and the firm. And celebrate they should: Frederick Law Olmsted is the father-figure of the greening of American cities, including Boston. The seminal landscape architect, politician, writer, and ecological thinker who died 100 years ago this August has become a cultural hero for his fusion of grid and green. Since surfacing from decades of neglect a generation ago, Olmsted has become the model urban planner for an environmental age. Olmsted pioneered the idea of an urban life enhanced by green spaces and the Olmsted Brothers firm he founded created superb parks and green networks that have transfigured cities from Boston to Chicago to Seattle. In celebrating the 150th birthday of Central Park, the centennial of the Seattle system, and the renovation of Brooklyn's Prospect Park and Boston's Emerald Necklace, city dwellers have paid homage to the designer. It's about time. By the 1950s and '60s, this city had slighted Olmsted's work, let his groomed open spaces languish, and even misspelled his name - Jamaica Plain's Olmstead Street is an example. Fairsted, the spacious Brookline home and office from which Olmsted and his partners shaped Boston's 2,000-acre park system, had become dilapidated, and its priceless documents were crumbling. Like the phragmites that clogged the Fens, poor maintenance and misuse had obscured the founding father's work. Olmsted's vision of an Emerald Necklace linking Boston's parks and parkways into a green chain was tarnished by neglect and automobile exhaust. Olmsted masterpieces from New York to Louisville to Atlanta also languished in disrepair, unrecognized as "signed" pieces.
