The original O'Keefe family coat of arms is said to be unique? family folklore has it that there is a horse on one side and a noose on the other?which leads some to suggest ?that the family was run out of town as horse thieves. In fact, one O'Keefe back in County Cork said about a relative who was hanged that "he died during a tightrope performance." Our family sense of humor has stood me in good stead?and God knows you need one in Washington, where we walk a tightrope every day?often with similar results.
But tonight I wanted to spend a little time reflecting on the great contributions of the Irish ? and Irish Americans particularly to the spirit of adventure and display of gallantry that so uniquely defines Americans as explorers. Virtually every ethnic group in the vast melting pot on America can point with pride to the contributions made by their sons and daughters to the American achievements in exploration?.. and the Irish may very well lead the way.

Radio 1 phoned my mother (Mrs. Bridget Jones, Glountane) asking her if she could make contact with the person running Charlie Horans Bar in Castleisland because he wanted to do some recordings there of people who knew Patrick OKeeffe and learned music from him. Later that week, Peter phoned me and he was amazed at the fact that he had met a Glountane person running the bar he had selected to do his recordings. We arranged a date for him to carry out his work and then it all started. So began my interest in the life and times of my neighbour Patrick OKeeffe. Peter Browne and myself got on very well from the moment we met. I developed a great interest in what he was doing and traveled around to lots of local musicians with him. The Securities and Exchange Commission ("Commission") announced that it filed a Complaint today in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan against seven former executives of MCA Financial Corporation ("MCA"). The defendants are Patrick Quinlan, MCA's former CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Lee Wells, MCA's former President and Chief Operating Officer and member of the Board of Directors, Keith Pietila, MCA's former Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer, Alexander Ajemian, MCA's former Controller and Treasurer, John O'Leary, MCA's former Senior Vice President of Corporate Finance, Cheryl Swain, MCA's former Vice President of Marketing Syndication and Kevin Lasky, MCA's former Vice President of Portfolio Management. The Complaint alleges that all seven defendants violated, or aided and abetted violations of, the antifraud provisions of the federal securities laws as a result of their conduct in connection with MCA's fraudulent sale of securities. In addition, the Complaint alleges that Quinlan, Wells, Pietila, Ajemian and O'Leary violated, or aided and abetted violations of, the periodic reporting and corporate record-keeping provisions of the federal securities laws.

PERMANENT INJUNCTION AND OTHER EQUITABLE RELIEF Plaintiff, the Securities and Exchange Commission ("Plaintiff" or "Commission"), alleges as follows: NATURE OF THE ACTION 1. This action involves a large scale securities offering and accounting fraud perpetrated by senior officers and personnel of MCA Financial Corporation ("MCA") to buttress a failing, high-risk mortgage banking business. As a result, the investing public lost at least $68 million. 2. From 1994 through 1999, MCA sponsored and sold approximately 73 series of pass-through certificates with assets totaling approximately $71 million. Each series corresponded to a distinct pool ("pool") of mortgages and land contracts (collectively referred to as "mortgages"), and each pass-through certificate represented ownership of an undivided fractional interest in a pool. In addition, MCA sold approximately $19 million of debentures pursuant to registration statements filed with the Commission to raise working capital for its mortgage banking operations. 3. From at least 1994 through 1999, MCA, through the Defendants, engaged in a scheme to defraud the pass-through certificate investors by distributing offering materials to investors which contained material misstatements and omissions concerning, among other things, the risk, rate of return and historical performance of the pass-through certificates causing investors to lose at least approximately $49 million. Also, from at least 1994 through 1999, MCA, through the Defendants, engaged in a scheme to defraud the debenture investors by materially misrepresenting, among other things, MCA's poor financial condition in registration statements and periodic reports filed with the Commission causing investors to lose all of the approximately $19 million invested.

All the trappings of what has become a pretty big day for fun in the US are described (for young readers-so no green beer). The kids dress up wearing green and in this case they look a little bit like leprechauns. They hunt for four leaf clovers, dance an Irish jig and even have some Irish stew. The drink green juice and listen to some Irish music, sing songs, parade around and just generally have a good time. The little lass has bright red hair and a very jaunty manner. The text is fairly simple and not particularly exciting although the illustrations show plenty of activity and enthusiasm and are much stronger than the text. There is really nothing outstanding about this offering-it is just a pleasant early reader with a focus on a special holiday. South Boston
This year's 104th annual parade takes place the Sunday after St. Patrick's Day. This year's parade celebrates the 200th anniversary of South Boston (1804-2004). The parade features marching bands and pipe bands throughout North America. South Boston is Boston's most Irish neighborhood and has a glorious tradition of helping others while keeping Irish heritage alive. The parade committee is headed by John Hurley, a Navy veteran and South Boston native.

by Dan O'Leary A modern day miracle occurs each year as part of the St. Patrick's Day Parade celebration when the Chicago River turns an incredible shade of Irish green. This spectacular transformation ranks right up there with the parting of the sea by Moses and the Pyramids of Egypt. For the past 43 years the Chicago River turns green for the St. Patrick's Day Parade celebration. One would ask how this is different from the rest of the year when the river is always a murky shade of green. The difference is both significant and breathtaking because the color green is identical to the greens of Ireland from where it got its name "The Emerald Isle."

"I don't know this guy Patrick Street, but I tell you, the boys in his band are really good." This comment was heard in line just a few minutes before the start of the very first concert on the very first tour ever played by Patrick Street. Well, Patrick never did show up, but the "boys" are still doing fine without him! The Irish "supergroup" Patrick Street began with four recognized masters joining forces for a tour in 1986. Fifteen years and seven albums later, the group has reached "legendary" status. Billboard has called their music "mesmerizing" and their albums "a must for those who love Irish music."

PATRICK , St., Apostle of Ireland. The early references to St. Patrick are few, The first is made by Cummianus in A.D. 634; Adamnan, in time same century, also makes reference to the saint; and of later authorities there is no lack. Prosper of Aquitania, the Venerable Bede , Columban, and others are silent on the subject: the remoteness of Ireland is sufficient to account for this. Our chief sources of information are two writ. ings which seem undoubtedly to be the work of St. Patrick, - the Confession , and the Epistle to Corolicus. The former is found in the Book of Armagh , an Irish manuscript of about the year 800; and both, in later but independent manuscripts. The Armagh copy professes to be transcribed from an original in the handwriting of the saint. The earliest lives extant quote from the Confession, showing tleat at an early date the work was considered genuine: so time external evidence is not without value.
