Transcript of The Book Show (July 16, 1992)
Smith: Welcome to The Book Show . I'm your host, Tom Smith, of the New York State Writers Institute which is located at the University of Albany as part of the State University of New York system. It’s a great pleasure to welcome back to The Book Show the internationally acclaimed Irish writer Edna O’Brien, author of many lovely and lyrical and compelling works of fiction. Edna O’Brien first achieved literary fame back in the 1960s with her trilogy of novels, The Country Girls which focused on the romantic and marital adventures of two unforgettable heroines Kate and Baba and their pilgrimage from rural Ireland to sophisticated London. Since that time Edna O’Brien has continued to write superb fiction, beautifully crafted novels such as Night A Pagan Place , and The High Road . And she has demonstrated her mastery of the short story with luminous collections like Fanatic Heart published in 1985 and Lantern Slides which won the Los Angeles Times fiction award for 1990. Her new book

Illustration by Charlie Powell D omesticity, death, erotic love the stark simplicity of Sharon Olds' subjects, and of her plain-spoken language, can sometimes make her seem like the brooding Earth Mother of American poetry. ("I have learned to get pleasure," Olds wrote in her last book, "from speaking of pain.") In photographs she tends to look somewhat dark and remote, too; there's a sense of brewing drama. She seems a natural heir to such melancholy talents as Ann Sexton and Sylvia Plath. It's a happy surprise, then, to discover that the 54-year-old Olds is anything but withdrawn and more-serious-than-thou. In fact, she comes across as a bundle of nervous energy, slightly neurotic, a bit like an intellectual Julie Haggerty. It's the end of the semester at New York University, where Olds has taught in the Graduate Creative Writing Program for the last 12 years, and the atmosphere outside her small office is chaotic. Olds herself arrives a few minutes late, looking slightly harried, and apologizes profusely while pulling two paper cups of tea from a brown bag one for herself, one for a visitor. It's hard to blame her for seeming a little breathless. In addition to her multiple duties at NYU, Olds runs the poetry workshop she founded in 1984 at New York's Goldwater Hospital for the severely disabled, and she reads at numerous speaking engagements. What's more, she claims to have such a backlog of poetry that when she does find the time to issue a new book such as "The Wellspring" (Knopf), published earlier this year it is generally made up of work written more than a decade earlier.

Olds, Sharon Waste Sonata
Genre Poem Keywords Alcoholism Children Empathy Family Relationships ... Trauma Summary A powerful lament over a father's wasted life, and the "purgatory" of living in a household dominated by alcoholism and marital discord. Strong and graphic language weaves a complex web of conflicting emotions: hatred and self-hatred, scorn and pity, condemnation and forgiveness. Commentary This is from the collection of poems written by Olds about a father's terminal illness and death, and retrospectively, about a life together (see also in this database "The Waiting" "The Pulling" "The Dead Body" "Beyond Harm" Source The Father Publisher Knopf (New York) Edition Annotated by Aull, Felice

Olds is fascinated by the spell of sensuality and the subtleties of inheritance and ponders with forthrightness and vigor the forces that propel us through life—the sweep of sexual desire, the ache of love, the astonishment of birth, the net of motherhood, the horror of disease, the distortions of age, the certainty of death. As she has been in each of her previous precipice-pacing collections, including Blood, Tin, Straw (1999), Olds is exhilaratingly frank in her celebration of the erotic and in her ongoing analysis of her wounded life with abusive parents and bliss in marriage and parenthood. But here she adds a new dimension to her family saga by owning up to her WASP heritage and expressing shame and guilt over her culture’s prejudices. This gives rise to some stunningly visceral poems about suffering and death that are rendered as unsparingly and transcendently as the most explicit and demanding of religious paintings and charged with a fierce holiness. Olds, fiery, penetrating, and unnerving, uses words as kindling, so that “fear flamed into ecstasy,” anger is tempered into mercy, and redemption is found in a courageous openness to all of life. —
