Often this poet, strolling through the noisy splintered glare of a Manhattan noon, has paused at a sample Olivetti to type up thirty or forty lines of ruminations, or pondering more deeply has withdrawn to a darkened ware- or firehouse to limn his computed misunderstandings of the eternal questions of life, co-existence and depth, while never forgetting to eat Lunch his favorite meal....* Welcome to FRANK O'HARA.COM Please Come In For Some Lunch

    Ohara Shoson (Koson, Hoson) 1877-1945
Japanese-style painter and printmaker. Ohara Shoson began as a student of Suzuki Koson. He painted flora and fauna between 1895-1902 becoming recognized as a "Nihonga" painter in the 'Kacho-ga' (nature print) genre. During the Russo-Japanese war he produced a few ' Senso-e ' (war prints). The majority of his early prints (1900 -1912) were published by Kokkeido and Daikokuya and were designed for the foreign market. All were signed " Koson ". Between 1912-1926 he again devoted himself to painting. Using the name ' Shoson ', he returned to the woodblock medium, collaborating with Watanabe. Shoson did produce some prints using the name "Hoson' which were published by Kawaguchi between 1930-1931, but the majority of his prints were published by Watanabe. While the artists' prints had always been sold abroad, his success in the West was assured as a result of the 1930 and 1936 Toledo Museum exhibitions. More prints by Shoson were sold during these shows than any other artists' due to their artistic/decorative nature and the fact that they sold for one-quarter the price of the works of Yoshida and others. Shoson reached his peak in the mid 1930's. His work is realistic, based mainly on his own sketches and watercolors. It is estimated that he produced more than 450 designs of birds. That lesson is contained in a number of OHaras best known poems, somewhere be-tween the construction workers, sandwiches, cheap copies of Genet and lonesco, in the voice of Billy Holiday or in a painting of Mike Goldberg~s. This excerpt contains the most famous elements of OHaras aesthetic in naked paradigm: the ubiquitous lunch, numbers (very Charles Demuth), the real concerns of a young poet in the city but also the victorious optimism. Trivial objects with a right all their own brush tq
Which means that you can be perfectly g1oon~y and read OHara, too; he knew how to move among and excite the tangle of constructs that are, generally, ones strength and burden: the personality. He was one of the few poets who could use

Not everyone liked Frank O'Hara's poetry, but they all had something to say about it.
Most of the following quotes and/or snippets are taken from Frank O'Hara: To
    Be True To a City
, a collection of writings on O'Hara edited by Jim Elledge and
published by the inimitable University of Michigan Press (1990). "To see what really moves an O'Hara poem involves considering O'Hara as
an unusually conspicuous example of the interaction between American
poetry and modern painting.... Even those O'Hara poems which accept linear progression often follow [Jackson] Pollock in abandoning ordinary visual imagery." Anthony Libby, from "O'Hara on the Silver Range," Contemporary Literature 17, no. 2 (Spring 1976). "Just as thinking of Leaves of Grass [Walt Whitman] as a city helps to
deal with its disparate parts, so does entering the city of O'Hara's
Collected Poems help, because the collection is a city, as diverse
and incoherent as any city is likely to be, and yet whole. In fact, it is
useful to approach each O'Hara poem as a citynot as a microcosm
but as that part of a city immediately available through the consciousness of Frank O'Hara, the part that contains the whole."

comparison of prints by ito sozan and ohara shoson Many prints by Ito Sozan and Ohara Shoson (also called Koson) are noticeably similar in subject matter and composition. Shoson's prints tend to be very realistic and precise in their details, while Sozan print's are more stylized, often reminiscent of Japanese ink paintings. Some of their similarity in subject matter is likely due to the fact that both men worked with the same publisher

Notes for talk and reading given at Frank O'Hara Night
    Tallulah's Cabaret
    Buddies in Bad Times Theatre,
    Toronto April 2/96 10pm
Programme organized by Charlie Huiskin of This Ain't the Rosedale Library, the Church Street bookstore, in honour of the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Frank O'Hara this summer and the seventieth anniversary of the birth of Frank O'Hara this spring.
Sky Gilbert of the Buddies and Bad Times Theatre Group read the very campy "Lana Turner Has Collapsed," "Having a Coke with You" and something else. He also directed a short seven-character play of Frank O'Hara's. And, though declaring that he didn't pretend to be in league with O'Hara, read some of his own very excellent and very O'Hara-ish poems, which sounded great.
Jay MillAr, a young Toronto poet who is on a year-long project involving writing poems in imitation of Frank O'Hara, read from his latest Boondoggle Books "sampler," Frank Talk. It's obvious that the great O'Hara spirit has taken over this young fellow's life for the nonce, and it seems like a wondrous thing.
David W. McFadden delivered a talk that went something like this. These were originally notes for the talk, but some of the changes were inserted so it is partial notes, partial transcription.
