Cooney, John. The American Pope: The Life and Times of Francis Cardinal Spellman. New York: Times Books, 1984. 364 pages.
Author John Cooney interviewed dozens of priests who worked with Cardinal Spellman, many of whom would only speak on background. He also filed the usual FOIA requests with the FBI and State Department. The records of the Archdiocese of New York, where Spellman reigned for 28 years, are closed to researchers, but one priest slipped Cooney a copy of Spellman's diary. This is the first major biography of Spellman (1889-1967), who was a major figure in American politics during the first half of the Cold War. A consummate politician, Spellman laid low at first and cultivated key people in Rome. After his friend Cardinal Pacelli became Pope Pius XII in 1939, Spellman was appointed an archbishop. During the war, he travelled to war zones and acted as FDR's secret agent. After the war he allied himself with Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn, and became a kingmaker in New York City politics. He continued to support U.S. military adventures by visiting the troops, attending Pentagon briefings, discussing strategy with generals, and gathering intelligence for the CIA and State Department. Were it not for Spellman's early (beginning in 1950) efforts to support Ngo Dinh Diem, South Vietnam's puppet government might not have emerged. Ultimately the Vatican became wary of Spellman's power. So did antiwar activists, who demonstrated against "Spellman's War" outside his residence and cathedral.

From Frank O'Hara: Poet among Painters , new ed. U of Chicago Press, 1997
INTRODUCTION, 1997

by MARJORIE PERLOFF When Frank O'Hara: Poet Among Painters was published twenty years ago, O'Hara was a coterie figure, adored by his New York School friends and acolytes, especially by the painters whose work he exhibited and wrote aboutbut otherwise regarded (when regarded at all) as a charming minor poet. Herbert Leibowitz, in a largely generous review of O'Hara's Collected Poems for the New York Times Book Review in 1971, called O'Hara "an aesthetic courtier who had taste and impudence and prodigious energy." Even the avant-garde poet/novelist Gilbert Sorrentino, whose New York literary world intersected with O'Hara's through the mediation of Amiri Baraka (then LeRoi Jones) and his magazine Yugen , described Lunch Poems as "mov[ing] in a world of wry elegance, of gesture, a world made up of a certain kind of strictly New York joie de vivre : slightly down at heels and rumpled, but with the kind of style always a step above current 'style'." What is not said in these or the other reviews of O'Hara's poetry in the late sixties and seventies is that the "style" to which Sorrentino draws our attention was a style recognizably gay. Indeed, neither in the moving memorial essays by John Ashbery or Kenneth Koch nor in the many critiques, from Francis Hope's dismissal of the "puppyish charm of [O'Hara's] occasional good impromptus," to Marius Bewley's bemused characterization of the poet's "long invertebrate verse lines" as so many "streamers of crepe paper fluttering before an electric fan," is direct reference made to the poet's homosexuality. When, for example, Thomas Byrom reviewed my book, along with O'Hara's

Dara W. Frank, Ph.D. Professor University of Texas at Austin (1984) Microbiology and Immunology Genetic Regulation of Exotoxin Synthesis Bacteria monitor and adapt to environmental changes through alteration in gene expression. Pseudomonas aeruginosa , normally a soil and water inhabitant, can adapt to the environment of a compromised human host to cause serious and sometimes lethal infections. Patients that are predisposed to P. aeruginosa infection include burn victims, leukemic patients, and individuals with cystic fibrosis. Adaptation to the compromised host correlates with the expression of virulence determinants that allow P. aeruginosa to evade the host immune response and spread or disseminate to different tissues. The production exoenzyme S, an extracellular virulence determinant, has been correlated with the ability of P. aeruginosa to disseminate from epithelial colonization sites to the bloodstream. My laboratory uses genetic approaches to study the mechanisms governing production and secretion of exoenzyme S and other coordinately regulated virulence determinants in response to host environmental signals. Exoenzyme S is a member of the ADP-ribosyltransferase family of bacterial toxins. Exoenzyme S covalently modifies vimentin, a cytoskeletal component, and small GTP binding proteins of the H- and K-ras family. In this reaction ADP-ribose is transferred from NAD to arginine residues on eukaryotic target proteins. A eukaryotic activator protein, called FAS, is also required for exoenzyme S activity. Although exoenzyme S activity has been detected in animal tissues infected with wild-type

Digressions on Some Poems by Frank OHara: A Memoir > Customer Review #2: When NY was the center of the art world and friends mattered

At Frank OHaras funeral, composer Virgil Thomsom turned to the poets longtime friend Joe LeSueur and said, "Baby, I hope you kept a journal." Though clearly not drawing upon stale journal entries, LeSueurs memoir of his relationship with OHara (which survived the vicissitudes of its ever-changing status...friends to lovers to friends, etc.) is a nice blend of personal memories and feverish impromptu research (Brad Goochs biography seems to have been ever at his elbow). LeSueur is neither vindictive nor pointlessly benign. He truly understood and appreciated OHaras central position in the explosion of art that was happening in New York in the 50s and 60s. Unlike Ginsberg and the Beat poets, OHara was equally at ease among literary folk, musicians, and painters (especially the abstract expressionists). To read about OHara is to read about the greatness of post-war New York.

The First Time I Met Frank OHara: Reading Gay American Writers > Customer Review #2: Small Book With Large Sensibility

Well, not just an interesting glimpse at over a dozen gay American writers by a young writer himself. (Thoreau, Melville, Whitman, Wilde, Firbank, Baldwin, and minors such as Halleck, Fuller, Van Vechten, Ford, Purdy...) But also a valuable concept of "gay sensibility" in writing. Whitaker describes this as "original and fresh," but also "clever, scornful of laws, introspective, energetic, and sexy." Often it imports irony and wit. Usually also some melancholy. This concept usefully expands the concept of "camp," and it refreshes the shopworn query, "But is there such a thing as gay literature," etc. Less unique but valuable is the book noting again the idea that earlier gay writers had to encode, be dualistic and dissimulating and duplicitous to get their message across under the radar of prohibitions. And that gay readers drew great sustenance from this covert communication in an earlier wasteland. These are useful perspectives to recall, for gay history, and also for all diversity-minority-multicultural concerns as well.

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) In 1939, an Irish miss of 18 landed in Hollywood not knowing what to expect. Her education came swiftly as she was thrust into stardom with her first movie and became a pawn in the big-studio system. With customary frankness, Maureen O'Hara recounts her life story in "'Tis Herself," written with John Nicoletti. She tells it all: her love-hate relationship with mentor John Ford; her devotion strictly platonic to co-star John Wayne; the misbehavior of Errol Flynn; the rudeness of Rex Harrison; two failed marriages and a happy marriage that ended in tragedy; a phony scandal that helped put Confidential magazine out of business. O'Hara, with her flaming red hair and a startling beauty that belies her 83 years, came here from her current home in Arizona to talk about the book and her life.
