The Reaping Race
by Liam O'Flaherty
At dawn the reapers were already in the rye field. It was the big rectangular field owned by James McDara, the retired engineer. The field started on the slope of a hill and ran down gently to the sea-road that was covered with sand. It was bound by a low stone fence, and the yellow heads of the rye-stalks leaned out over the fence all round in a thick mass, jostling and crushing one another as the morning breeze swept over them with a swishing sound. McDara himself, a white-haired old man in grey tweeds, was standing outside the fence on the sea-road, waving his stick and talking to a few people who had gathered even at that early hour. His brick-red face was all excitement, and he waved his blackthorn stick as he talked in a loud voice to the men about him. "I measured it out yesterday," he was saying, "as even as it could be done. Upon my honour there isn't an inch in the difference between one strip and another of the three strips. D'ye see? I have laid lines along the length of the field so they can't go wrong. Come here and I'll show ye." He led the men along from end to end of the field and showed how he had measured it off into three even parts and marked the strips with white lines laid along the ground.

My newest book, features an introduction by the noted Irish-American artist Edmund Sullivan, while one of Mr. Sullivan's wonderful west-of-Ireland paintings graces its front cover. The book is a thoughtful blend of history, travelogue, literature, essay, memoir and poetry that is Irish through and through. I like to think of it as 'Irish stew' for the heart and soul. If your local bookseller does not have it on the shelf, ask them to order you a copy or two. Your request should be in-stock in less than a week. The book makes a great gift for anyone going to or having recently visited Ireland. You may also order a copy through this website or on-line from any number of other reliable book distributors. I thank you in advance for your support of my writing and for letting your friends know about this new title. God bless and all the best, always, Cathal Liam

Bibliography Download the PDF Introduction This story was included in a collection of early stories titled Spring Sowing . When O’Flaherty’s friend and mentor, the critic Edward Garnett, told him to write about those things with which he was familiar, he naturally turned to the scene of his childhood: the bleak Aran Islands. Many of his stories are graphic descriptions of the peasant life on these nearly barren rocks, as human beings grapple with the unforgiving elements of nature. There are also stories, nine of them in this collection, that have to do with animals and their treatment by human beings. In ‘‘The Wave,’’ however, there are neither human nor animal characters, but one part of nature against another. Liam O’Flaherty became famous because of his novels, especially

Skills:
Becoming a Strategic Reader
Identifying a Metaphor
  • Identifying Conflict Identifying and Dealing with Ambiguity
Becoming a Strategic Reader I want you to practice close reading, reading as if every word were important. I want you to s l o w l y r e a d. I want you to develop reading habits that keep you thinking and keep you in the game of reading. “The game of reading?” you ask. Yes, the game. It is a competition. It is a puzzle. It is a game between you and the author. In this case, O’Flaherty tries to get you to think in certain ways. He wants to surprise you and pull you in at the same time. He pulls you in so he can surprise you and he surprises you to pull you in to his way of thinking. Your role is to get in to the story without letting O’Flaherty do the leading. Your job is to not be surprised without missing the surprises. Get it? Does this sound confusing or does this sound like fun? Take it as a challenge that you are going to meet, because you are in the game for the next few decades whether you like it or not. O’Flaherty isn’t the only opponent you’ll be meeting and the others are going to be playing whether you are in the game or riding the bench. Don’t worry. I’m a good coach, but I can’t do it for you. You have to be a good player that will show up, will practice hard and will want to compete.

The Unofficial Homepage for Liam O'Flaherty Capturing the Rotunda, 1922 An extract from Liam O’Flaherty’s Ireland by Peter Costello, Wolfhound Press, Dublin . . . The key factor, it seemed to Liam, was the unemployed, largely ex-soldiers – his kind of people. He clashed with the leadership of the CPI over this. He advocated supporting the workers who were taking over factories in several parts of the country, especially at Cork Harbour and in Limerick. But this suggestion was turned down on the grounds that Communists did not lead putsches. This incident was merely one symptom of the general disorder in the country, which was reflected in countless strikes and stoppages of all kinds. In February the new National Army was established by the government, but this soon came into collision with the IRA which opposed the treaty. On April 14, Rory O’Connor seized the Four Courts; other anti-Treatyites took over other buildings in Dublin. The standoff between the two sides continued. In June Liam returned from the south. He was now writing for Republican papers such as The Plain People: an article on Larkin’s imprisonment in America (a cause close to Liam’s brother Tom) appeared on June 18. Ten days later, following the murder of General Wilson in London, the government’s hand was forced. The new army fired on their former comrades in the Four Courts and the Civil War began in real earnest. The members of the Communist Party were also members of the Irish Citizen Army and joined several of the garrisons in the city supporting O’Connor. Liam was one of those occupying Vaughan’s Hotel, a rambling set of houses on the corner of Parnell Square and Granby Row – this had been a haunt of Collins and other Republicans during the earlier troubles. Other Communists were in Moran’s Hotel and in the Hammam Hotel in O’Connell Street.

Thanks for your help. A tribute to Liam O'Flaherty in honor of an August birthday by Bridget Haggerty My maiden name is O'Flaherty and, while I cannot claim any direct kinship with Liam, I am very proud to be a member of his clan, if only by name. So, it is with a great deal of respect and admiration that I'd like to share with you something of his background and his life. He began his education on the island; however, when he was 12, a visiting Holy Ghost priest arranged schooling for him at Rockwell College, County Tipperary, Blackrock College, Dublin, and then, University College Dublin as a diocesan seminarian. His family was anti-clerical, but if you were a boy from a poor family, the only way to get an education was to train for the priesthood; young Liam indicated that he had a vocation simply to ensure his education was funded by the Church. The idea of becoming a priest was abandoned in 1915 when he joined the Irish Guards and was sent to the trenches in France during World War I. In 1917, he was badly wounded by a German shell and hospitalized for shell shock, a condition that haunted him for many years and which was probably responsible for two nervous breakdowns.

    BOOK REVIEW
    Famine
by Liam O'Flaherty (Wolfhound Press, 2002; first published in 1937)
Reviewed by Rick Price, owner of ExperiencePlus!
Liam O'Flaherty's Famine brings the history of the Great Famine (1846-50) in Ireland alive through the story of three generations of Irish peasants, just as Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath documented the dustbowl migration of poor, starving families from Oklahoma to California. It is a story of poverty, starvation, disease, and socio-political struggles of a suppressed class caught by chance in the wrong place at the wrong time. This class, though, involved nearly three million Irish who either died or emigrated as a result of this great historic event. Liam O'Flaherty was born on Inishmoor, largest of the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway in the west of Ireland. Not only was he born in one of the most remote places in Ireland (see photo), he grew up in a remote village on the island where life consisted of fabricating soil to grow potatoes and raising the bare minimum of livestock, namely chickens and a cow for milk. O'Flaherty writes of the subsistence existence of these peasants from first-hand experience and writes of the devastation that results when these meager assets are taken from the peasants one at a time. O'Flaherty's father forbade him from speaking Irish, the better to make an educated man of him. Of course, the rebellious boy spoke Irish with his friends until the age of 12 when he went to mainland Ireland to religious boarding school and, eventually, higher education, never to return to Aran for any length of time.
