Flannery O'Connor
© eMe Textos:

http://www.storybites.com/oconnor.htm
Flannery OÂ’Connor (1925-64)
Commentary by Karen Bernardo Flannery OÂ’Connor has the reputation of writing some of the quirkiest fiction in the annals of American literature. Her characters are strange, if not downright bizarre. But there was a message behind OÂ’ConnorÂ’s madnessand that was contained in her conviction that we are all, even those of us who seem most "normal," wanting in the sight of God. A devout Catholic, OÂ’Connor expressed her belief in humanityÂ’s need for salvation in every story. All O'Connor's stories deal with the workings of grace in the everyday world. O'Connor saw grace all around her, but no radiant angels "sent by God" appear in her fiction; rather, she believed that it often takes a rude shock - if not an outright trauma - to jolt people out of their complacency and into an awareness of their need for salvation. In both "Revelation" and "Greenleaf," this comes through the encounter of smug, self-righteous female protagonists with secondary characters they consider to be inferior. Because we tend to read literature from a secular viewpoint, we want the central question in the story to be whether bourgeois propriety gives one the right to demean others.
But that isn't really O'Connor's point. The epileptic girl who attacks Mrs. Turpin in "Revelation," the "common" Mr. Greenleaf who rankles Mrs. May in "Greenleaf," or the serial killer in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" are not merely symbolic of the world's "have-nots." They are catalysts in the process of spiritual redemption. Like their counterparts in other O'Connor stories, they jar their respective protagonists out of their easy assumptions about life, and catapult them into a new relationship with the Divine.

A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery OConnor
In her short story "A Good Man is Hard to Find” Flannery O'Connor's seems to portray a feeling that society as she saw it was drastically changing for the worse. O'Connor's obvious displeasure with society at the time is most likely a result of her Catholic religion and her very conservative upbringing in the ‘old south.’ She seems to depict her opinion in this particular story by using the character of the grandmother to show what she saw was happening to the times. Evidence of society's "demise" is woven into the story, and presented through an interesting generation gap between the grandmother and her family. The grandmother is representative of devoutness and Christianity which O'Connor apparently believed to be more prevalent in the "glamorous" Old South. Attention to prim detail separated the grandmother from the rest of her family who see Approximate Word count = 580 Approximate Pages = 2 (250 words per page double spaced) Want to view this paper along with other term papers, essays, and book reports?

Mayo 13, 2004 Here's a meme that's been doing the rounds recently. Out of a particular list (see below) of classic novels, exactly how few have you actually read? Honestly now. "Studying" the novel at school doesn't count, because as every fule kno, you just get the video out, innit, and don't bother actually reading the thing. The books I have read are in bold (in the exztended entry): Beowulf
Achebe, Chinua - Things Fall Apart
Agee, James - A Death in the Family
Austen, Jane - Pride and Prejudice
Baldwin, James - Go Tell It on the Mountain
Beckett, Samuel - Waiting for Godot
Bellow, Saul - The Adventures of Augie March
Brontë, Charlotte - Jane Eyre
Brontë, Emily - Wuthering Heights
Camus, Albert - The Stranger no, but I have read 'Nausea'
