Flannery OConnor: Spiritual Writings > Customer Review #1: A Treasure Trove of Flannery

Robert Ellsberg has come through again. He provides us with a marvelous review of the spiritual writings of Flannery OConnor, most famous for her short stories but neglected, up until now, for her deep analyses of the Catholic faith and salvation. Ellsberg selects the best from the voluminous collection of her letters, "The Habit of Being," and arranges them for accessibility and understanding in sections entitled "Christian Realism," "Mother and Teacher," "Revelation," "A Reason to Write," and "The Province of Joy." Flannery didnt want to be a voice crying in the wilderness. She wanted to reach an unbelieving audience even though she bridled at being called a "Catholic writer." She preferred to be called "a Christian realist" and said that "one of the awful things about writing when you are a Christian is that for you the ultimate reality is the Incarnation, and nobody believes in the Incarnation, that is, nobody in your audience." Flannery wanted her audience to be broad and for that she strove to become the best story teller possible, beginning with her stint at the Iowa Writers Workshop. She went on to become required reading in college English courses. There are PhD theses galore now on this most excellent of American writers.

A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery OConnor
In her short story "A Good Man is Hard to Find” Flannery O'Connor's seems to portray a feeling that society as she saw it was drastically changing for the worse. O'Connor's obvious displeasure with society at the time is most likely a result of her Catholic religion and her very conservative upbringing in the ‘old south.’ She seems to depict her opinion in this particular story by using the character of the grandmother to show what she saw was happening to the times. Evidence of society's "demise" is woven into the story, and presented through an interesting generation gap between the grandmother and her family. The grandmother is representative of devoutness and Christianity which O'Connor apparently believed to be more prevalent in the "glamorous" Old South. Attention to prim detail separated the grandmother from the rest of her family who see Approximate Word count = 580 Approximate Pages = 2 (250 words per page double spaced) Want to view this paper along with other term papers, essays, and book reports?

Introduction
Southern writer Flannery O'Connor and Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins , though a century apart, were fellow travelers in their belief in, and demonstration of, lit-erature's ability to guide the reader into an experience of God's transcendence. Both de-vout Catholics, they used their writing to reflect their conviction that God's grace was palpably evident in the created world. Hopkins' work is notable for his depiction of God's presence through the soaring beauty and profound tragedy of man's existence. O'Connor, though, demonstrates how God works through the ugliness of fallen man and man's mundane, sometimes, profane surroundings. In this particular essay, I draw upon another common theme in Hopkins' and O'Connor's work. Considering Hopkins' Ig-natian formation, and considering the Carmelite heritage to which both had access given their Catholic piety, Hopkins and O'Connor employed literature to underscore the essen-tial role of silence in the spiritual life of the believer. First, though, as a matter of human interest, it is worth noting the several instances in which O'Connor referred to Gerard Manley Hopkins.

Three by Flannery OConnor: Wise Blood/the Violent Bear It Away/Everything That Rises/Must Converge > Customer Review #1: perhaps our most underrated author

Wise Blood (1952)(Flannery OConnor 1925-68) All human nature vigorously resists grace because grace changes us and the change is painful. -Flannery OConnor Wise Blood is Flannery OConnors grotesque picaresque tale of Hazel Motes of Eastrod, Tennessee; a young man who has come to the city of Taulkinham bringing with him an enormous resentment of Christianity and the clergy. He is in an open state of rebellion against the rigidity of his itinerant preacher grandfather and his strict mother. So when one of the first people he encounters is the blind street preacher Asa Hawks and Motes finds himself both attracted and repelled by Hawks bewitching fifteen year old daughter Lily Sabbath, he reacts by establishing his own street ministry. He founds the "Church without Christ":

Flannery OConnor: A Life > Customer Review #1: This work is merely competent...

Flannery OConnor is arguably one of the most important writers of the twentieth century. She was passionately Southern and passionately Catholic, dedicated to her craft and a consummate professional. This is why I think she would have scorned her recent biography, written by Jean Cash. Cashs work is merely competent. She has all the facts straight. The book is well-researched, and well documented. Cash has flipped over every OConnor stone, but there are so few unpublished gems at this point, that the project seems to be simply one of repetition. What makes Cashs biography especially defective is that she seems afraid to make qualitative judgments regarding OConnor or her work. I suppose this can be good in other biographies of lesser-known literary figures. The biography falls short, in other words, precisely because of its attention to detail, and its lack of synthesis. There are times when it reads like a shopping list of OConnor things, places, friends and relatives. Cashs prose falls lifeless into the annals of poorly-written biographies.

An author is a person who has written a book or created a video or CD-ROM (such as Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut), but the creator of a work is not always one person. A work could be created by multiple people (such as Conceptual Physics by Jae R. Ballif and William E. Dibble). Sometimes when items are created by multiple people within an organization, the item is attributed to the organization as a whole (such as Military Forces in Transition by the United States Dept. of Defense). Despite her brief life and relatively modest output, her work is regarded as among the most distinguished American fiction of the mid-twentieth century. Her two collections of short stories, A Good Man Is Hard to Find (1955) and Everything That Rises Must Converge (1965), were included in (1971), which won the National Book Award. O’Connor inhabited simultaneously two radically different worlds. The world she created in her stories is populated with bratty children, malcontents, incompetents, pious frauds, bewildered intellectuals, deformed cynics, rednecks, hucksters, racists, perverts, and murderers who experience dramatically intense moments that surprise and shock readers. Her personal life, however, was largely uneventful. She humorously acknowledged its quiet nature in 1958 when she claimed that "there won’t be any biographies of me because, for only one reason, lives spent between the house and the chicken yard do not make exciting copy." Accent in 1946 and earned her master of fine arts degree in 1947. She wrote stories about life in the rural South, and this subject matter, along with her devout Catholic perspective, became central to her fiction.

There has been a considerable amount of hand wringing lately over contemporary students' reluctance to take courses in medieval studies in general and medieval literature in particular. Whether it is an issue of language difficulty, or cultural alterity, or apparent discontinuity between medieval concerns and present-day curiosities, enrollmentswe hearare dropping. Certainly I have experienced some reluctance on the part of students to tackle Middle English, but I have felt more strongly their tendency to marginalize medieval literature and its accompanying world view as too distant, too different from that own. In other words, they find medieval literature altogether too medieval in all of the word's pejorative connotations. In particular, I find young men and women of the Baptist/Methodist Southeast as either dismissive of or perplexed by medieval catholicism. One way to dispel such assumptions of dissimilarity and disconnection is to link medieval and contemporary texts within required reading lists to show modern writers still struggling with medieval concerns.
I've found such a link in Flannery O'Connor's short stories. Students feel comfortable with her rural southern settings, with the limited urban skylines of her southern cities, even with her grotesque and degenerate characters. They know of Bible salesmen, they remember disdain for niggers, and recognize all the undependable stereotypes of "good country people." As a result, O'Connor's catholicism, though theologically exotic and in need of a little special effort to puzzle through, is not completely foreign. If the message isn't clear at first, at least the overall picture is.

Flannery O'Connor - Southern Prophet
Summary:

When a woman wrote to Flannery O'Connor saying that one of her stories "left a bad taste in my mouth", Flannery wrote back: "You weren't supposed to eat it". Flannery O'Connor was one of the major American short story writers of the 20th century. The Complete Stories of Flannery O'Connor , posthumously collected in 1971, won the National Book Award for Fiction and has remained in print ever since. But her widespread success as a master of Southern Gothic belies the difficulty her work poses for many readers. The violence and "grotesque" elements of her stories often seem alienating and harsh but they incorporate her transcendent concerns. A devout Catholic in the heart of the fundamentalist Bible Belt, Flannery O'Connor spent most of her life on a dairy farm in Georgia with her widowed mother, raising peafowl, and died there of lupus in 1964, at the age of thirty nine. In this Encounter, Carmel Howard explores the paradoxical art of Flannery O'Connor - and the Southern culture that helped shape it. There will be no transcript available for this program.

When that work is so distinct and the characters so clear, you sometimes think you know something about that writer and who they were. It could be argued that a writer can be found in their words, but a good writer may be hard to find in those words which may often confound the reader rather than betray the writer. Maybe she would have had a good laugh over it. After reading some of her letters to her literary friends and after digesting her fiction, one can see the humorous side she pokes at the world and herself. Her writing, often deep, dark and violent has a flip side, a humorous yet serious commentary on humankind. She remains a powerful voice in literature today.

The Life You Save May Be Your Own: An American Pilgrimage > Customer Review #1: Moving Examination of Religious Belief in American Writing

Walker Percy also had to battle with despair. Both his father and grandfather committed suicide. The Percys were an aristocratic Southern family with a strong tradition of stoicism; that is, the nobility of suffering as the sole consolation. Percy eventually came to see that wasnt enough. In his first novel, "The Moviegoer", he examined "the greatest despair: that it does not know that it is despair." And in his best novel (in my opinion) "The Thanatos Syndrome" he explores the death wish of western civilization and the necessary faith-based cure. Elies accounts of the lives of Merton and Day are also very interesting, but those authors are perhaps not quite as prominent as they used to be. Day is better known for her many good works than her prosaic writing. And the monasticism of Merton seems to be a little esoteric and removed from quotidian, everyday life as it is lived by most of us. But they are still worthwhile as studies of what it means to take religion seriously in your life; to try to see the ultimate, luminous transcendental reality above and beyond the immediately visible one. This is a very moving, soul-satisfying book.
