"Art is a lie that helps us see the Truth." Pablo Picasso "All good books are alike in that they are truer than if they really happened.... and afterwards it all belongs to you." Ernest Hemingway "His langu age is infused with a lyrical melancholy deftly balanced by a touch of Irish gallows humor. He is solidly within the tradition of midwestern soldier-poets, which includes Hemingway, Dos Passos, Jones, and O'Brien's fellow Minnesotan, Fitzgerald.... Richard Cacciato, O'Brien's commanding officer in Vietnam... was upset that, in fiction, he had been demoted from lieutenant to private, and transformed from a good soldier into a deserter. [Upon being told this, O'Brien] chuckled and said "If you see him again, tell him I only borrowed his name."

Tim wrote this for our show. We're not sure how to take that... He recorded it with Shawn Camp. Tim was the lead singer with the group Hot Rize. He has written a number one song for Kathy Mattea, "Walk The Way The Wind Blows." He is currently achieving recognition simultaneously by the old timey, bluegrass, and songwriting communities, which is hard to do. He has new recordings in all those categories. Tim is one of the few triple threats: a very strong singer, musician and writer, considered an expert as any of those. This summer he toured with Bela Fleck in support of "The Bluegrass Sessions," their collaboration with Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Tony Rice, and others. Tim O'Brien Website:

Tim O'Brien Appointed IBMA President
Tim O'Brien, IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year in 1993 and one of the first recipients of the award for Entertainer of the Year back in 1990 along with his band mates in Hot Rize, has been appointed president by the IBMA Board of Directors. O'Brien replaces Pete Wernick, who has served as IBMA's president for 16 years. A recent change in the bylaws adds a three-year maximum term limit to the office, which continues to be a one-year position appointed by the board.
A singer of unusual clarity and originality, a self-taught multi-instrumentalist of rare ability, and a talented songwriter, O'Brien has made a lasting mark on bluegrass music, as well as the wider ranging "Americana" genre, through his innate musicianship and wide-ranging tastes. Whether it's an old-time fiddle tune, a revitalized honky-tonk shuffle from the 1950s, or an original, bluegrass-edged folk song, Tim's music feels familiar and comfortable while never lapsing into the predictable. The Wall Street Journal called Tim "a player who updates and clarifies classic repertoire without stripping it of its earthy essence, and who writes classic-sounding material stamped with his own perceptive personality." O'Brien himself describes what he does in simpler terms: "making something new out of something old."
Originally from Wheeling, West Virginia, Tim's early influences were live performances by artists like Charley Pride, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Country Gentlemen and Jimmy Martin at radio's famous WWVA Jamboree. After moving to Colorado, Tim met the other three members of Hot Rize and performed with this immensely popular and entertaining bluegrass group from 1978-1990. Never straying far from a traditional sound, the quartet distinguished itself with fresh harmony singing and original material, Pete Wernick's melodic banjo playing, Charles Sawtelle's inimitable guitar and O'Brien's easy-going rhythmic drive. Sailing at the top of the Hot Rize sound was Tim 's soulful, high lonesome lead vocal line. Tim O'Brien is a natural, when it comes to musicone of the rare artists from any genre of music who makes what he does look simple, while at the same time overwhelming audiences with his virtuosity and originality.

Clink Album Reviews Tim O’Brien
Traveler [Sugar Hill Records]
by Steve Cooper Tim’s last all-solo, all-the-time CD was 1997’s When No One’s Around . In between, he has released albums with La Grange, the Crossing, Powell/Herrmann, Darrell Scott, and Hot Rize (a live one). I was beginning to wonder if Tim would ever release another 100% Tim album. Finally, at long last (six years), we have another solo Tim O’Brien. And, it is (to quote myself) one of the best solo albums Americana has to offer. Traveler has eleven Tim originals and one cover of an obscure Olla Belle Reed song. Let us begin with the cover song, Reed’s “I’ve Endured.” Tim’s easy, agile tenor delivers this tale of poverty and endurance with style and grace. He hits high and low notes with seamless ease. Darrell Scott sings high harmonies on the choruses, and Dirk Powell plays a mean clawhammer banjo. And I should mention Casey Driessen on fiddle because Tim usually multitracks mandolin and fiddle (but not on this album). The sound could be called neo-oldtime except for the soulful, almost-jazzy dip and dive of Tim’s vocal. His intricate interplay on the mandolin with Powell’s clawhammer is also more dangerous than your average oldtime. Yet none of the spirit of this simple song of overcoming hardship is lost. “Turn the Page Again” showcases Tim’s lightning fast mandolin runs. Vocally, as ever, he nails it with seemingly little or no sweat. Tim’s vocal style is hard to categorize. It is a mixture of bluegrass high-lonesome and singer-songwriter conversational. There are also hints of jazz and soul. His delivery is smooth, with no huffing and puffing, and yet he can blow your house down. The lyric to this fine song concerns seasons changing and, metaphorically, the ebb and flow of a loving relationship: “Summer days are longer, I’m still waiting for your call/Left hanging like a promise, like summer leaves that fall/Sometimes she’s a stranger, sometimes she’s my friend/Seasons change, turn the page again.”

Biography
a rare duo who really transcend all musical boundaries It's commonplace these days to find musicians described as transcending boundaries; to find one who really does it is more unusual, and to find two at the same time is rarer still. That is the only way, though, to describe Tim O'Brien and Darrell Scott. But how else can you characterize musicians who can write songs for the likes of Garth Brooks, top the Americana airplay chart, win the respect of bluegrass audiences and make albums that carry echoes of Celtic, reggae, blues, and rock'n'roll, all while recording with everyone from bluegrass patriarch Ralph Stanley to young country favorites like John Berry? If variety is the spice of musical life, then these two men are master chefs, and when they get together, the result is guaranteed to be a tasty stew indeed. Tim O'Brien is widely known as a veteran roots music performer. With a background in bluegrass (his band, Hot Rize, won an International Bluegrass Music Association Entertainer of the Year award) and recordings ranging from three Americana chart-topping solo albums to acclaimed projects with his sister Mollie to work with Dwight Yoakam, Robert Earl Keen, Robin and Linda Williams, Jerry Douglas, Charlie Sizemore, Ralph Stanley and even a Top 10 duet with Kathy Mattea, Tim puts his mastery of acoustic instruments to work in a variety of settings that reflect his love for blues, calypso and other styles. His bluegrass singing earned him a 1993 Male Vocalist of the Year award from the IBMA, while his interpretation of Bob Dylan songs (1996's Red on Blonde) won him a Grammy nomination. As a vocalist and performer, Tim has an easy going manner that nevertheless has a streak of intensity running through it to guarantee that listeners will not only be entertained but moved.
