Some would have it that children's literature is literature written specially for children, though many books that were originally intended for adults are now commonly thought of as works for children, for example Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper , or Huckleberry Finn . The opposite has also been known to occur, where works of fiction originally written or marketed for children are given recognition as adult books. Witness that in recent years, the prestigious Whitbread Awards were twice given to books marketed as children's books: Philip Pullman's

Boyds Mills. $14.95 (1-878093-22-3) Galley. Ages 6-9. In a quiet story with just the right touch of sentimentality. Oberman beautifully evokes a sense of continuity across generations Enhancing his third-person narrative with a smattering of dialogue, he tells of the Jewish boy Adam growing up in a shtetl, whose life drastically changes when famine and chaos in old Russia force his parents to immigrate to America. At parting. Adam's beloved grandfather gives the boy a gift. a prayer shawl ("my always prayer shawl"), which was presented to the grandfather by his grandfather, for whom Adam was named. Lewin's first paintings, in black and white, show the white-bearded grandfather in the shtetl, the soldiers with their guns, the tall buildings in America dramatically dwarfing Adam and his parents. Then, in one double-page spread that telescopes Adam's growing into manhood, the artwork leaps into glorious color. While Oberman's controlled text capsulizes the passage of time in words, the color paintings show Adam the man proudly wearing his Russian grandfather's shawl, then Adam the grandfather, passing the shawl and what it represents on to his own young grandson. As good as any of Lewin's best work, the watercolors are abundantly detailed and wonderfully expressive (the grandfathers and grandsons are at once different and the same).

How to Interview for a Life story
by Sheldon Oberman
Gathering a life story can be a wonderful experience as well as an honor for both the interviewer and the person interviewed. It strengthens the bonds between generations and enriches both family and community. When done as a class project, it can connect the school to families in very special way. A good interview establishes a comfortable rapport with sincere interest in someone's life story. You can gather a life story in different ways - objectively in the manner of a reporter historian or academic researcher or else more subjectively in a personal search for roots or as a storyteller looking for a good tale. For me, what began as a personal recollection of my grandfather's life led to my writing a children's book, The Always Prayer Shawl . Whatever your purpose, it is important that the interview itself is satisfying for everyone. The right question asked in the right way brings out great treasures - not highly priced objects but the stories and insights that give events and objects their personal value. I suggest it is best to gather both the hard facts, as well as personal insights. The facts establish the

TV Sal and the Game Show from Outer Space is a zany story about a girl who watches too much TV. Sal is at the cottage, where she has been watching TV all week long. Her family invites her to go for a walk with them, but she declines because she wants to watch more TV. After her family leaves she notices that there is something wrong with channel 2. The game show host of "Let's Make a Trade" hands her a list and tells her to go and get whatever is on that list so she can make a trade. Sal proceeds to do this and then jumps into the TV. Sal makes her trade and wins the "Universal Channel Changer," which allows her to participate in any TV show in the universe. Sal is trapped in bizarre, alien TV shows until the next day, when "Let's Make a Trade" is on again. She wins a trip back home again and rewinds the time so that she doesn't get into trouble for being away from home. At the end of the story her family is astounded when Sal says she doesn't want to watch any more TV.

Mythology, Greek-Juvenile literature. Grades 4-8 / Ages 9-13. Review by Valerie Nielsen. excerpt:
"I will protect you from Cronos," the Goddess Rhea whispered to her unborn baby. She would not let him take this baby as he had taken all others. Cronos was the Angry God who ruled from a stormy sky. He had seized power from his father, Uranos, the first god to rule the world. Hungry for power, Cronos attacked Uranos with a curved stone knife as he lay sleeping in his bed.
In Island of the Minotaur , author and storyteller Sheldon Oberman has woven 12 mythic tales of the Minoan civilization into one continuous narrative. For young readers who are not familiar with the beginnings of Greek mythology, Oberman opens with the story of Zeus' defeat of his child swallowing father, Cronos. Well known characters who have found their way into this collection of stories include Europa, Theseus, Jason and Medea, Daedalus and Icarus and King Minos of Crete. Oberman manages to introduce the major gods of the Greek pantheon into his story, as well as other fascinating creatures such as the satyr like goat man Pan, Talus the bronze giant, Cerberus, three headed guardian of Hades and the monstrous Minotaur, offspring of Queen Pasiphae and the Great White Bull.
