Oates, Joyce Carol The Sepulchre
Genre Short Story Keywords Aging Caregivers Family Relationships Father-Daughter Relationship Summary A frantic phone call from an elderly mother to her middle-aged daughter opens this somewhat surreal and menacing short story. What follows is the daughter's search for her father who has been missing for one and one-half days. Is he lost because of the stroke he had suffered or merely being wickedly mischievous as his wife suggests? Or is he hiding in anger or seeking revenge? Or, is he dead? The menacing tone to this story is a result of the author's skillful use of the second person voice: "Dad? Daddy? you whisper. You imagine you hear low, throaty laughterunless it's the wind . . . the door to the closet is open, your mother preceded you here, desperate in her search; you know no one is hiding inside but you can't stop yourself from peering in, holding your breath. Then you switch off the closet light, you switch off the lights in the room, shut the door and walk away."

joyce carol oates. Big Mouth Ugly Girl joyce carol oates Loner Ursula Riggs has built an impenetrable persona for herselfwarrior woman, alias Ugly Girl.
http://www.childrenslit.com/f_joycecaroloats.html
Joyce Carol Oates Hot on the success of her first young adult novel Big Mouth and Ugly Girl , Joyce released Freaky Green Eyes . All this writing may be a result of spending a lot of time alone, she noted. She does however, have two cats, but they generally ignore her. Joyce has always been interested in literary forms and genres. She considers children's books a culture of its own, but she really wasn't aware of how they have changed from when she was a child-"there is no subject that cannot be dealt with in a young adult book these days." She feels that adult fiction is also a genre in itself. Each deals with human sophistication and situations. However, for children the work is more visual and for adult it is more monolithic-her adult books deal with irony, which you don't find in children's literature. She did make a lovely observation about the importance of reading-"children get read to by adults and then they read to themselves and once again they read to their children." (If that were only true in all households, then there would indeed be full literacy and a firmly instilled love of reading.) In her continuing comments about the differences between young adult and adult literature, Joyce noted that in looking at young adult literature as a genre, the form tends to be shorter, although, the Harry Potter series proves that this is not necessarily true and that kids do have long attention spans. Adult novels are more expository especially in setting scenes and backgrounds. That does not seem to be allowed much in young adult fiction. Descriptions of people are kept a lot shorter. Dialog, plot and character are developed quickly.

It was the mid-seventies, the ideals were already dead, the Vietnam war was over and nobody had a cause anymore. What is left of these historically charged years is the sexual liberation... Andre Harrow singles out girls from his class, and invites them at his house under the official pretext that they will become assistant to his wife, Dorcas, a sculptress whose disturbing works represents crude naked figures. Gillian, shy and pretty much inexperienced, can only begin to understand what happens at her professor's house. Andre Harrow justifies his hidden acts to his classes by quoting D.H. Lawrence, who inspires his way of life. When Andre finally singles Gillian out, she enters a nightmarish life out of which she can only find one issue. We discover while reading the book that not only the professor and his wife becomes beasts by letting their instincts take the lead, but the young compliant girls are ultimately dehumanized too...

"I'll Take You There"
The short and sweet of the novel is this: In a somewhat confounding move, she joins a sorority only to find out how unlike she is to all these women, who are the very embodiment of the American beauty; she has her first intimate relationship with an African American philosophy student named Verner Matheius who is ten years her senior, yet he refuses to participate in the civil rights movement; then, two years later she drives her Volkswagen bug from Vermont to Colorado to see her dying father (whom she believed was already dead) but when she gets there, she is not allowed to look at him. None of these events begins or ends the way one would expect because our narrator is not a typical girl having received very little emotional guidance growing up. Her distinct disadvantage began with having her mother die when she was only eighteen-months old. Her father, three brothers and paternal grandparents blame her for her mother's death. Her childhood is filled with made up memories of her mother and seeking acceptance from her alcoholic father, who doesn't ever call her anything but "You" and is often startled that she exists at all.

Joyce Carol Oates

Contributing Editor: Eileen T. Bender
Classroom Issues and Strategies
In a time of instant fareboth literal and intellectualJoyce Carol Oates is most demanding. Several of her more recent novels (she has published eighteen as of 1988) are, like the nineteenth-century work she parodies, voluminous. Oates has produced an amazing variety of excellent work in all genres: novels, short fiction, drama, critical essays, poetry, reviews of contemporary writing and ideas. She reads, edits, and teaches, currently holding a chair professorship at Princeton University. She defeats those readers who want artists to fit certain categories. Extremely well read and at home in the classroom, Oates is often deliberately elusive. While she calls her writing "experimental," Oates's individual works are highly accessibleat least at first glance. Often, as in "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" they begin in familiar territory. The central characters and the scenes are vivid and recognizable. Details (in this case, the drive-in teen culture, the sibling rivalry, the snatches of popular songs) enhance the sense of . Yet by the end, dark and violent forces surface to baffle conventional expectations of both character and plot. Once again, the so-called "Dark Lady of American Letters" creates a disturbance, challenging the reader to think of both fiction and reality with new and deeper understanding.
