Naomi Shihab Nye
by Mindy S. Howie Anyone who feels poetry is an alien or ominous force should consider the style in which human beings think. 'How do you think?' I ask my students. 'Do you think in complete, elaborate sentences? In fully developed paragraphs with careful footnotes? Or in flashes and bursts of images, snatches of lines leaping one to the next, descriptive fragments, sensory details?' We think in poetry. But some people pretend poetry is far away. Naomi Shihab NyeALAN Review Web site Naomi Shihab Nye was born on March 12, 1952, in St. Louis, Missouri to an American mother and a Palestinian father. At the age of seven, she published her first poem, and at age 14, her family moved to Jerusalem, where she attended a year of high school. Her family then moved to San Antonio, Texas, where she lives today with her husband and son. In her writing, she draws on the voices of the Mexican-Americans that live near her, as well as the perspectives of Arab-Americans like herself and the ideas and practices of the different local subcultures of America. Nye has gained a reputation for poetry that shows ordinary events, people and objects from a new perspective. She says, "For me the primary source of poetry has always been local life, random characters met on the streets, our own ancestry sifting down to us through small essential daily tasks" (Contemporary Authors).

sweetening winter
What does "going up/into the air" mean?
their stones glisten under the sun but one by one we are losing their housecoats their formal phrasings their cupcakes How/why does the speaker move from "we" to "I" after stanza three? When I string their names on the long cord when I think how there is almost no one left who remembers what stood in that brushy spot ninety years ago What connection is made between the old people and the speaker when she is also up in the air near the end of the poem? when I pass their yards and the bare peach tree bends a little when I see their rusted chairs sitting in the same spots what will be forgotten falls over me like the sky over our whole neighborhood or the time my plane circled high above our street the roof of our house dotting the tiniest "i"

Naomi Shihab Nye Rain A teacher asked Paul what he would remember from third grade, and he sat a long time before writing "this year somebody tutched me on the sholder" and turned his paper in. Later she showed it to me as an example of her wasted life. The words he wrote were large as houses in a landscape. He wanted to go inside them and live, he could fill in the windows of "o" and "d" and be safe while outside birds building nests in drainpipes knew nothing of the coming rain.

Letter from Naomi Shihab Nye, Arab-American Poet: To Any Would-Be Terrorists
I am sorry I have to call you that, but I don't know how else to get your attention. I hate that word. Do you know how hard some of us have worked to get rid of that word, to deny its instant connection to the Middle East? And now look. Look what extra work we have. Not only did your colleagues kill thousands of innocent, international people in those buildings and scar their families forever, they wounded a huge community of people in the Middle East, in the United States and all over the world. If that's what they wanted to do, please know the mission was a terrible success, and you can stop now. Because I feel a little closer to you than many Americans could possibly feel, or ever want to feel, I insist that you listen to me. Sit down and listen. I know what kinds of foods you like. I would feed them to you if you were right here, because it is very very important that you listen. I am humble in my country's pain and I am furious. My Palestinian father became a refugee in 1948. He came to the United States as a college student. He is 74 years old now and still homesick. He has planted fig trees. He has invited all the Ethiopians in his neighborhood to fill their little paper sacks with his figs. He has written columns and stories saying the Arabs are not terrorists, he has worked all his life to defy that word. Arabs are businessmen and students and kind neighbors. There is no one like him and there are thousands like him - gentle Arab daddies who make everyone laugh around the dinner table, who have a hard time with headlines, who stand outside in the evenings with their hands in their pockets staring toward the far horizon.

Interview with Naomi Shihab Nye
interviewed by Rachel Barenblat
Naomi Shihab Nye has been one of my favorite poets for as long as I can remember. My first acquaintance with her came when I was a child, enrolled in a poetry class that she was teaching; she was exciting, invigorating, encouraging. My second acquaintance with her came through her poems, once I reached adulthood and started reading and writing poetry myself. If you read my review of FUEL Pif - January, 1999) , her most recent book of poems, you know how fabulous I think she is; if not, I can recap it in one sentence: FUEL is an amazing, strong, surprising, fantastic book of poems – and Nye is an amazing, strong, surprising, fantastic poet.

Echoes Main Biography Sample Poetry Inspired Poems ... Bibliography The Poetic World of Naomi Shihab Nye Descending from a half-Palestinian and half-American family tree, Naomi Shihab Nye is an appealing figure paving the way for ethnic poets and young poets alike. Although she was born in Missouri, she is well traveled. She lived in Jerusalem but currently resides in Texas with her son, Madison, and husband, Michael, who is a photographer. The fact that Nye originated from such a transient and ethnic family acted as a springboard for her future career as an author. She is known for her essays and anthologies of the Middle East, which includes, perhaps her most famous Middle Eastern based anthology, Different Ways to Pray , published in 1980. Howe ver, despite her wide range of exposures to other cultures, Naomi Shihab Nye often chooses to write about the little details of life that we often take for granted. She says that she wanted to remember all of the details in her eventful and fruitful life. Consequentially, she keeps a journal. She has had a hunger to write poetry since seven years of age, when she composed her first poem. Since then she received an education from Trinity University located in Texas, along with many awards. Her works Different Ways to Pray and Hugging the Jukebox won the Voertman Poetry Prize. She has also earned three Pushcart Prizes. Her books
