Durham Diocese Last updated - 23rd March 2003 Welcome To St. John's Parish Homepage St. John's Parish incorporates Castleside, Moorside, The Grove and Rowley and is located to the west of Consett in County Durham. Newcastle is 16 miles to the east, Hexham 15 miles to the North, Darlington 25 miles to the South, and the lovely North Pennines and the Derwent Valley to the West. The church itself sits at the A68 crossroads in the village of Castleside with the very welcoming watering hole 'The Smelters Arms' on the opposite corner. A break here in your journey and a visit to both, will refresh you in Body and Soul! The church built of local stone, was designed by Mr. Ewan Christian of London and is a reproduction of a church he had seen and admired while on holiday in Switzerland. It is a small church, holding at a squeeze, about 130 people and has a peaceful and welcoming feel about it. St John's was consecrated by the Right Reverend Dr. Baring, Bishop of Durham on 7th March 1867. The bishop had problems getting home that day due to heavy snow and after getting stuck at High Stoop, had to complete his journey on a snow plough! The first vicar of St. John The Evangelist, Castleside was the Rev. Wesley Farrar M.A. who had at one time been a curate at the nearby parish of Lanchester and had had the responsibility of looking after Castleside. He was vicar until 1892.

M any people are too young to remember the impact the feature The Beatles' Yellow Submarine had on the animation industry and American society when it was released in 1968. At the time it was produced, Disney dominated the animated feature market with traditional-looking products that were released once every three or four years ( Jungle Book , 1967). With the release of Yellow Submarine the world actually changed. The film contained music, a spirit and an amazing look that delighted and charmed the Western world. This simple fable helped people regain a more positive attitude about life and reminded them it was okay to smile and have fun. Some people who had dressed conservatively before they saw it were suddenly wearing bright colors, costumes and the latest in mod fashions. Hippies painted Yellow Submarines on their vans and in San Francisco a Beatles fan painted a scene from the film on the front of her house. More importantly, the direction by George Dunning and the brilliant design work by Heinz Edelmann influenced the look of advertising art. Suddenly 7 Up, General Electric and other corporations were promoting themselves with animated TV commercials and print campaigns inspired by the feature. Conroi du Burm Conroi du Burm are a UK based 12th Century (early medieval) re-enactment Society depicting a group of professional Anglo-Norman soldiers, upholding the rule of good King John and the laws of the church around the year 1200. So what do the Conroi do? We take part in shows all over the country, from heritage events to carnivals. We have a "living history" exhibit - an encampment of period tents and equipment that we live, cook and eat in. We have soldiers, squires, knights and their womenfolk, and can arrange cooks, leatherworkers, armourers, and even lepers (no, not real ones!) - all living as they would have done in their period, and answering questions from the public, demonstrating their skills. As the Conroi are a professional group of soldiers a lot of our time is taken up with demonstrating combat techniques, training with weapons, archery practice and acquiring the skills of battle (plus drinking, gaming, and other "soldierly pursuits"). Baynes [For introduction to the whole volume see The Life of Daniel the Stylite THE first half of the seventh century was marked in the Eastern provinces of the Empire by great literary activity in hagiography and four outstanding figures in the writing of lives of the saints were intimately associated. Leontius bishop of Neapolis in Cyprus wrote a biography of St. John the Almsgiver, Patriarch of Alexandria. Both Leontius and the Patriarch were, it would seem, natives of Cyprus and the former probably lived in contact with St. John during his patriarchate. John Moschus, a Palestinian monk, was the author of the Pratum Spirituale - In A.D. 602 the Emperor Maurice had been dethroned and together with his family put to death by the rude soldier Phocas whose reign was a bloody tyranny. The cities of the Empire were thrown into confusion by the fights of the circus parties, the Blues and the Greens, while Jews seized the opportunity of these conflicts to kill off some of the hated Christians. There was no effective opposition to the armed forces of Sassanid Persia which had invaded East Roman territory.
