Pixel Juice from Corgi Price: Customer Review: Pixel Juice is a collection of 50 short stories, all pulled screaming from the swirling psychadelicatessen that is Jeff Noon's brain. And this fellow Vurtuans is what you can do too. I first encountered Jeff through 'Vurt', I was sucked into 'Pollen', his second book, and after tettering on the edge of 'Automated Alice' for a while, have succumbed to Nymphomation. I thoroughly recommend everyone to get into this guy. He has a bizarre style of writing, but it so easily takes over your subconscious. For any Mancunians out there it is a must, as Vurt and Pollen are both based in futuristic Manchester. Scary, scary thought! Check these links, then go and beg, borrow, or buy his stories and let me know what you think.....

Vurt play - via Jeremy Nicholson: From reading the discussion group list, there appears to be a play of 'Vurt' being put on in London starting on the 25th May. New book: Amazon.com has announced details of a new book , "Needle In The Groove," due for release on 4th May 2000 in the U.K. (info provided by Jeremy Nicholson ) From New Insight magazine May 2000: "Noon's sixth book continues the extraordinary trance fiction he started in 1993 with first novel Vurt. Like his other work, Needle is deeply psychedelic in the real sense. It is exquisitely crafted - Noon makes you really feel the music which informs this powerful fictional history of Manchester sounds from skiffle through electronica.
The mystery unravels through the story of Elliot, a bassist who stumbles across shocking secrets when he auditions for dance outfit Glam Damage. Success beckons, their single hits the charts - then the main man does a Richie James and completely, chillingly disappears.

Definitely not the sort of place to grow up artistic and I led a classic writer's childhood, in the sense that I created my own inner world. I studied Painting and Drama at Manchester University, but only after a few years working at various things, trying to find a way to break through. I took a job at Waterstone's in Manchester and ended up working there for five years - surrounded by books but I didn't think that much about writing one myself. Until the Assistant Manager (who was starting his own publishing company) asked me to have a go at writing a novel. So I went home that night and starting writing: 'Mandy came out of the all-night Vurt-U-Want, clutching a bag of goodies.' The company became Ringpull Press, the book became Vurt, and the next thing I knew it had won the Arthur C. Clarke Award. I guess all those years of living inside my own head finally paid off. FALLING OUT OF CARS A brilliant exploration of a country and a psyche falling off the edge of reality.

W hat's really nice about Jeff Noon is that, firstly, I can use a word like "nice" about him (not, I expect, a word most cyberpunks would be comfortable with), and secondly, beyond the street-level-city-techno-punkiness that precedes him in the form of his novels Vurt and Pollen lurks a sense of humour. It's such a relief to find the macho/computer-nerd expertise sometimes seen in cyberpunk is apparently not for him. Reader, I want you to know that Jeff Noon has admitted to me that he just makes it up. He's no "method" author, relentlessly seeking out the truth that must lie within years of research. In fact, he's rather proud of the fact that "I know nothing at all about science or technology, and I'm bored by descriptions of how spaceships and computers work..." Labelling works of fiction is often bloody annoying for authors who, for the most part, would like to think there's a difference between writing and production. Predictably, Noon is keen to reject the cyberpunk label, even though he has been named its "foremost British exponent", and this must have had its uses. He insists that "writers don't choose the labels, we just live them". However, "for want of a better word" he does call his new book

A brief 1996 interview from Urban Desires talking about the evolution of concepts in Vurt.
    http://www.desires.com/2.1/Word/Reviews/Docs/noon-int.html
interview by Ron Hogan Chronicle hovers around our table, snapping pictures. "I was a playwright for a long time, and I used to do a lot of other things, like play in bands, did stand-up comedy, and I ended up working at this bookstore. One day, a friend of mine who owned a small publishing company came up to me while I was working and suggested I write a novel. So I went home that evening and started writing Vurt . And I didn't plan a single thing. I just started out...Mandy came out of the all-night Vurt-U-Want, clutching a bag of goodies. ...and let it go from there." Ringpull Press released Vurt in England in 1993. Six months later, a vacationing American literary agent found one copy of the book in an English-language bookshop in Berne. He bought it on a chance, and after reading the book, was so impressed that he immediately contacted Ringpull Press, bought and sold the American rights to Crown Publishers in five days. Noon quit his job at the bookstore as soon as he heard about the sale. Just a little over two years later, Vurt is out in paperback from St. Martin's Press, Crown has released its sequel
