Ngugi wa Thiong'o
Penpoints, Gunpoints, and Dreams:
An Interview by Charles Cantalupo
No African writer has as many major, lasting creative achievements in such a wide range of genre as Ngugi wa Thiong'o. His books include novels, plays, short stories, essays and scholarship, criticism and children's literature. His fiction, non fiction and drama, from the early 1960's to the present are frequently reprinted. He is the founder and editor of the groundbreaking, Gikuyu-language journal, Mutiiri. Political exile from Kenya, Ngugi - as he is known worldwide - is currently the Erich Remarque Professor of Languages at New York University, with a dual professorship in Comparative Literature and Performance Studies. Baudelaire writes, "De la vaporisation et de la concentration du moi. Tout est la." ("The dispersion and the reconstitution of the self. That's the whole story.") It's not. This is a primary message of African literature and art today. Ngugi wa Thiong'o is one of its primary exemplars. This interview focuses on Ngugi wa Thiong'o's book of essays

Ngugi wa Thiong'o lecture moved to accommodate larger audience The October 7 lecture by distinguished African novelist and playwright Ngugi wa Thiong'o (bio follows this page) will be moved from Hemenway Hall Theater to the Campus Center Ballroom at UH Manoa. The lecture, "Native Languages and the Politics of De-Colonization," is still set for noon Tuesday. "When we started hearing how many students and faculty were planning to come, we realized the Hemenway Theater would not be big enough," says Haunani-Kay Trask, director of the UH Center for Hawaiian Studies. The Center is hosting Ngugi and presenting two free public lectures by the celebrated African writer. "At Campus Center, we can accommodate a larger audience, and we even have the flexibility to enlarge the space somewhat if we need to." Trask says there will be signs posted at Hemenway Theater directing the audience to the new location, in the nearby Campus Center. Ngugi will also speak Thursday, October 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Center for Hawaiian Studies at UH Manoa. His topic that evening will be "Native Resistance in Contemporary Africa."

That Ngugi wa Thiong'o now makes his home in Irvine is a testimony to the growing cosmopolitan nature of Orange County and the turmoil of the modern world. It's rare when a single person is both an acclaimed artist (in this case a novelist and playwright) and a leading scholar. But when you listen to Ngugi's life story it is all one piece.
Born in Kenya just before the Second World War, Ngugi (the n is silent) came of age during the last days of the British Empire. In Kenya, the Mau Mau rebellion paved the way for independence in the early '60s and the presidency of Jomo Kenyatta. Born in a large peasant family, Ngugi grew up speaking Gikuyu - the local tribal tongue - before excelling at English in secondary school. After finishing his education in England at Leeds University, Ngugi began writing plays and novels - often with a political message.
His 1977 novel, "Petals of Blood," was a searing portrait of life in neo-colonial Kenya. The Sunday Times of London described the novel as exploring all the shapes, forms and colors power could take. Enjoying critical acclaim and a teaching career at the University of Nairobi, Ngugi's life suddenly plunged down a dark alley when his play "Ngaahika Ndeenda" ("I Will Marry When I Want") was performed in Gikuyu in an open air theater in Limuru, west of Niarobi. Like his other work this play was sharply critical of the inequalities in Kenya but "the powers that be" decided that this drama cut too close to the bone because Ngugi was now communicating with average Kenyans in the local language of the most powerful tribe - the Kikuyu.

Ngugi wa Thiong'o
Kenyan teacher, novelist, essayist, and playwright, whose works function as an important link between the pioneers of African writing and the younger generation of postcolonial writers. After imprisonment in 1978, Ngugi abandoned using English as the primary language of his work in favor of Gikuyu, his native tongue. The transition from colonialism to postcoloniality and the crisis of modernity has been a central issues in a great deal of Ngugi's writings. Again the owl cried. Twice!
'A warning to her,' Njorege thought. And again his whole soul rose in anger - anger against all those with a white skin, all those foreign elements that had displaced the true sons of the land from their God-given place. Had God not promised Gekoyo that he would give all the land to the father of the tribe - he and his posterity? Now all the land had been taken away."

(from 'The Martyr' in African Literature Ngugi wa Thiong'o was born in Kamiriithu, near Limuru, Kiambu District, as the fifth child of the third of his father's four wives. At that time Kenya was under British rule, which ended in 1963. Ngugi's family belonged to the Kenya's largest ethnic group, the Gikuyu. His father, Thiong'o wa Nducu, was a peasant farmer, who was forced to become a squatter after the British Imperial Act of 1915. Ngugi attended the mission-run school at Kamaandura in Limuru, Karinga school in Maanguu, and Alliance High School in Kikuyu. During these years Ngugi became a devout Christian. Later he rejected Christianity, and changed his original name in 1976 from James Ngugi, which he saw as a sign of colonialism, to Ngugi wa Thiong'o.

Like many of the dispossessed peasants in Petals of Blood , his father worked as a laborer on the estate of an African landowner. Ngugi's mother was one of his father's four wives, and Ngugi was one of about twenty-eight children in the family. After his primary school education at independent Kenyan schools, Ngugi attended Alliance High School, an institution that had many similarities to his fictional Siriana, with its western-biased curriculum and Christian teaching. During his high school years, many of his family members were involved in the Mau Mau uprising and the resistance movement. During the struggle, Ngugi's parents were arrested and his...
