This context proves important in his early novels, which deal with the dilemmas of growing up in two worlds: as a Kikuyu/African and a Westerner/Christian. He was educated at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, and the University of Leeds. His early works, Weep Not Child The River Between , and A Grain of Wheat , depict the conflict of cultures and the role of Christianity, English education, and the increasingly oppressive treatment of the Kikuyu and other Africans, whose land had been taken by the colonists. Ngugi taught at Makerere University, University of Nairobi, and Northwestern University. While at the University of Nairobi, he chose to write in his native Kikuyu to help revitalize indigenous languages. His subsequent writing is critical of the corrupt politicians and other personalities of post-independence Kenya. Such politically charged writing led to his 1977 arrest and detention. After his release he went into exile, and was never reinstated as professor at the University of Nairobi. Ngugi remains in self-imposed exile, and taught at Yale University for several years before joining the faculty of NYU in 1993.

In order to shed his colonial Christian namesake, Ngugi dropped "James" from his name in favor of his traditional name. As a result of his eventual international recognition as a novelist, short-story writer, playwright, and essayist, he is often referred to simply as Ngugi. Ngugi was one of twenty-eight children; his father, a peasant farmer who could not own his own land, had four wives, and Ngugi was the fifth child of the third wife. Ngugi first received primary education beginning in 1946, in a school established by colonialist missionaries. Two years later, he was transferred to a school run by members of his... Bibliography Download the PDF Introduction Petals of Blood is the fourth novel written by Ngugi wa Thiong'o, who is more commonly known simply as Ngugi. The novel describes the inequality, hypocrisy, and betrayal of peasants and workers in post-independence Kenya. As with Ngugi's other works, many of the events depicted in the novel have their basis in historical and social fact. The work is a damning indictment of the corruption and greed of Kenya's political, economic, and social elite who, after the struggle for freedom from British rule, have not returned the wealth of the land to its people but rather perpetuate the social injustice and economic inequality that were a feature of colonial oppression. In addition to criticizing this neocolonialism, the novel is also a bitter critique of the economic system of capitalism and its destructive, alienating effects on traditional Kenyan society. The deeply political novel takes the form of a detective story. Three prominent industrialists in the town of Ilmorog in north-central Kenya have been murdered, and four suspects are questioned by the police. These four are the protagonists of the novel, whose interrelated stories are recounted against the background of Kenya's past and present. The shifting perspectives and timeline of the novel reinforce the sense of dislocation and disorientation of the once proud community of villagers who now struggle against the indignities of the neocolonial world.

The Martyr by Ngugi wa Thiong'o
Jump to: Introduction Author Biography Summary and Analysis Characters Themes Style Historical Context Critical Overview Criticism Compare and Contrast Topics for Further Study What Do I Read Next? Bibliography Download the PDF Introduction The short story "The Martyr" by Kenyan novelist Ngugi wa Thiong'o, East Africa's leading writer, was first published in 1974, in his collection Secret Lives and Other Stories "The Martyr" addresses several concerns central to Ngugi's fiction and nonfiction writing. It takes place at a time of social and political upheaval in Kenyan history. The oppressive nature of the European colonial presence in Kenya is portrayed from the perspective of a native Kenyan. The typical colonial attitude in Africa—that the African people are "savages" who benefit from the "civilization" of the white colonists—is expressed through the opinions of the white characters in the story. The Christian imagery of the "martyr" draws on Ngugi' s Christian upbringing and his later renunciation of Christianity as a tool of colonialism. Finally, Ngugi explores the complexity of African and European relations in the colonial era, thus "humanizing" both sides of the conflict.

    Ngugi wa Thiong'o
    Ngugi wa Thiong'o
, the dominant figure of modern Kenyan literature, currently lives in the USA: although his books in English are not banned in Kenya, his political sympathies are not welcome. Ngugi's work is art serving the revolution - didactic, brusque, graphic and unsentimental. His novels, especially the later ones, are unforgiving: the touch of humour that would leaven the polemic rarely comes to the rescue. Powerful themes - exploitation, betrayal, cultural oppression, the imposition of Christianity, loss of and search for identity - drive the stories along urgently. Characters deal with real events and the changes of their time, struggling to come to terms with the influences at work on their lives. Ngugi's style is heady, idealistic and undaunted, never teasing or capricious. Disillusioned with English, his first work in Kikuyu, in collaboration with Ngugi wa Mirii, was the play

He had considerable success, but eventually turned to writing in his mother tongue, Gikuyu (though he did translate and publish these later works in English too). Ngugi is among a handful of authors who have written successfully in more than one language Samuel Beckett and Vladimir Nabokov are among the few others but his reasons for doing so differ somewhat from those of other bilingual authors. Decolonising the Mind is both an explanation of how he came to write in Gikuyu, as well as an exhortation for African writers to embrace their native tongues in their art.

Africa In Exile The following article is the first in a series about African writers in exile. We will look both backwards and forwards, as the state of exile is hardly a new event in the lives of writers of African descent. But that, dear reader, is jumping the gun. We begin: Ngugi Wa Thiong'o: Exile And Resistance
    Bronwyn Mills
Since 1982, Kenyan writer Ngugi wa Thiong'o has lived in exile in the United States. Probably best known for his novels about Kenya's struggle to throw off British colonial rule and to disgorge the bitter pill of neocolonialism his countrymen have subsequently had to swallow, he has had his own struggle with these forces. Beginning with his first novel, Weep Not Child (1964), through his fourth, Petals of Blood (1977) — which very clearly challenges "independent" Kenya's neocolonial regime — Ngugi wrote in English. However, in December of 1977, following the publication of Petals of Blood , Ngugi was arrested on vague, Kafkaesque charges and held without trial in Kenya's Kamiti Maximum Security Prison. At that point he began to write in his native Gikuyu, the language of the Mau Mau resistance movement. As he has said many times, this is one way to resist the cultural dominion of the West.
