Pier 21: The Place Where We Became Canadians
Macleans's Magazine - July 22, 1996 We build and preserve too few monuments to our past, but in Nova Scotia a group of historically-minded citizens is organizing a national fund-raising drive to resurrect a derelict pier on the Halifax waterfront. Led by the doughty and energetic Ruth Goldbloom, the project will cost $9 million, with half the funds already pledged by Ottawa, the province and the city. Rebuilding a rickety harbor shed doesn't sound all that exciting. But it's an eminently worthwhile project because Pier 21 was for 43 years (1928-1971) the main gateway to Canada. For more than 1.5 million immigrants, including wartime refugees, children evacuated from the British blitz, 50,000 war brides, and the thousands of postwar arrivals, the oblong structure symbolized the start of a new life. We have virtually no monuments to the multicultural nature of Canada, to salute those who came here seeking a fresh and better future-which, when you think about it, includes just about all Canadians. We're a nation of boat people. Because the newcomers spent only a morning or afternoon being processed inside the building, before being loaded aboard trains that distributed them across the country, most memories of Pier 21 are vague. But the experience of arriving in Canada-which then, and now, is a land that most of the world's refugees and immigrants dream of-remains unforgettable.

Peter C. Newman "Catching Up With The Future:
Magazines in the Age of Internet"
Luncheon Keynote Address Sponsored by CBP, CMPA and CCAB
Technology has moved from hardware to software to content. The 21st Century will be the age of the storytellers the only way to involve the emotions of our subscribers. The future of magazines will depend squarely on our ability to make it worthwhile for readers to invest their time in what we write and publish. That will require a revolution in our thinking and planning. The nature and extent of that revolution will be the text of my presentation. Shift happens. Speaker's Biography The author of 20 books that have sold 2 million copies, I have spent most of my time and energy with magazines, mainly Maclean's, where I have worked for 40 years, as a writer, political commentator, and editor. During my 11 years as editor in chief, I converted Maclean's from a general interest monthly to a weekly newsmagazine, and continue to contribute a regular column to its pages. A co-founder of the Committee for an Independent Canada and Friends of Public Broadcasting, I am a Canadian nationalist and remain completely neutral in my politics: I am against everybody. DEFINING MOMENTS: DISPATCHES FROM AN UNFINISHED REVOLUTION
Peter C. Newman
(Viking)
I know Peter C. Newman is a giant of Canadian Journalism, but Defining Moments has got to be the most blatant piece of vanity publishing I've seen in a very long time. Newman was recently the subject of a sycophantic profile in another Toronto newspaper, which ran under the headline "Newman retains competitive edge." It should have included a sub-head: "With as little effort as possible."
A rather windy introduction is Newman's sole original contribution to Defining Moments. I still can't believe someone of his stature would be this lazy. Trumpeting a bunch of old Maclean's columns and recycled magazine articles as "defining moments," or "dispatches" from a revolution declared in his last book, without any context or analysis, borders on megalomania.
As I read this, I kept returning to the thought that the money Viking blew on this doorstop could have been spent on somebody who had something new to say.
