Updated February 14, 2004
Samuel Casteel was Martha's father. His pension file says he was born in Pittsburgh in 1741. History shows us that this area of Pennsylvania was under French control at that time. If he was born there, he most likely was the son of a Trapper. In 1776 he enlisted at the "Forks of the Yough". On September 11, 1777 he was at the battle of Brandywine with George Washington's troops. He was at the defeat at Paoli (Poole) and the battle at Germantown October 4, 1777. He may have been wounded at this time because he doesn't mention being at Valley Forge. In 1779 he was at Fort Pitt where he fought against the Indians up the Alleghney River and received his discharge there after the war.
Other Surnames on my maternal line: Adkins, Cox, Graves, Henderson, Madison, McClain, Piggott, Roberts, Smith, Wheeler and many Quaker lines
Amos "Crandall" Hopkins one of the first settlers of Antelope Co., Nebraska, was the great-grandson of Jonah Hopkins of Rhode Island. Jonah's emigrant ancestor, Thomas Hopkins, came to America in 1636. Thomas had two sons whose descendants are well researched. William the oldest son was the ancestor of Stephen Hopkins, who signed the Declaration of Independence, and his brother Esek Hopkins, who was the first commander of the American Navy. The younger son Thomas is the ancestor of our line.
Jonah married Abigail Whitman, daughter of John and Sarah Sprague Whitman, who was descended from Richard Warren who came to America on the Mayflower. Jonah was a minute Man from Rhode Island, where he was listed in the 1777 Military census of Rhode Island. Jonah's son Oliver's pension file mentions he served in 1779 for his father Jonah.

Chief Executive, The
August-Sept, 2003 by David Saltman
At her first annual meeting as CEO and chair of the largest company in the world run by a woman, Marilyn Carlson Nelson glided up to the podium on Rollerblades. In place of the usual, "Good day, ladies and gentlemen," her entrance line was, "Here we go, go, go, go! Here we go, go, go, go!" Leader of the privately held Carlson Companies, the world's largest travel services business, Carlson Nelson calls herself a "mission-driven CEO." "I have labored to make our company culture an inclusive culture," she says. "The mission-driven CEO has to serve all stakeholders: the shareholders, of course, but also the employees, the customers, the community and the na tion." Pausing, she adds: "And, in my case, the family."

Nelson, who became President and CEO in March 1998, now assumes additional responsibilities as Chair of the Board of Directors, the position which company Founder Curtis L. Carlson held until his death in February. Since assuming the CEO role, Nelson has overseen the growth of the Carlson enterprises to a record $22 billion in systemwide revenues under the company’s brands. The company now has business operations in more than 140 countries. Nelson has been instrumental in forging international partnerships which have fueled the company’s growth: she helped guide a successful 1997 merger of Carlson’s business travel interest with those of the French company ACCOR; and in 1999 directed the formation of a partnership with German companies Westdeutsche Landesbank and Preussag, which merged Carlson’s United Kingdom travel operations with the German-owned Thomas Cook Group, creating one of the largest leisure travel companies in the world. In addition, she helped direct partnerships with foreign governments, such as that which resulted in the

A conversation with poet laurete Marilyn Nelson
By Sarah Kasok/Staff Writer Published: Thursday, March 7, 2002 "To say something true and say it in a beautiful way" is the goal of Marilyn Nelson. Nelson is a professor of English at the University of Connecticut and was recently named Poet Laureate of the State of Connecticut. She took the time to sit and discuss her poetry, life and thoughts with students at the Honors House on Tuesday night.
Nelson started to write poetry at the age of 12 when her father gave her an old anthology of poems. Her dream at this time was to have her own work be published in an anthology one day. Goals have changed somewhat for Nelson since then.
Nelson wrote poetry throughout high school and college, but then stopped for ten years. When she began to write again, she "started to make a commitment." She realized that to be an artist, she had to change her life.
She discussed challenges that artists face. Whether it may be poetry, painting or any other form, the art must consume the creator. She explained that the artist must look at their life, values and goals in a different way. She talked of the sometimes frustrating nature of her work in trying to find the truth she searches for. Sometimes in writing poetry she finds that it is a combination of "agony and joy in trying to put words together."

Marilyn Nelson: A profile
By Layla Schlack Published: Wednesday, April 30, 2003 Marilyn Nelson, Poet Laureate of Connecticut and UConn professor emeritus, does not fit the stereotypical description of a flighty, wishy-washy poet. She is down to earth, hard-working and passionate about what she does. Her ideas about poetry's place in the world and the responsibility of education are clearly defined. She also incorporates knowledge of science and current events into her work.
"Many people believe that poets are just inspired, that it comes from nowhere," she said.
Nelson said this image is just not true. She was often frustrated by UConn faculty when applying for grants, because many of them had this image and felt that a grant to a poet might be wasted if she failed to become inspired.
So far that has not been a problem for Nelson. Whether it is inspiration, research, just plain talent or some combination of the three, she is prolific and widely acclaimed in her work. She has written six books of poetry, two children's books and several books of prose. Awards she has won include the Annisfield-Wolf Award, the 1999 Poets' Prize, Boston Globe/Hornbook Award, the Flora Stieglitz Straus Award, Newbery Honor Book award and a Coretta Scott King Honor. She has been a finalist for the National Book Award twice, the PEN/Winship Award and the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize.

Marilyn Nelson Waniek Finalist for the National Book Award
In The Homeplace, the stories of a family become the history of a people as Marilyn Nelson Waniek sketches the lives descended from her great-great-grandmother Diverne. Diverne wanted to die, that August night
his face hung over hers, a sweating moon.
She wished so hard, she killed part of her heart.
If she had died, her one begotten son,
Pomp Atwood might have been another man: born with a single race, another name. Diverne might not have known the starburst joy her son would give her. And the man who came out of a twelve-room house and ran to her close shack across three yards that night, to leap onto her cornshuck pallet. Pomp was their
