Next poet laureate
Previous poet laureate The position doesn't come with a job title. But I'm trying to find creative and unique ways of getting people involved in poetry and making it more available to them. One unique situation involved auctioning off my services to write poems as part of a poetry reading service. My service was auctioned off to a couple in Boston who wanted a wedding poem written for their daughter as a surprise to read at her upcoming wedding. It's been a very rewarding experience. I'm also working on creating some kind of program for middle school children, and the possibility of placing poetry in doctors' and dentists' waiting rooms across the state.

The Fields of Praise
by Marilyn Nelson
A Review by Joyce S. Brown
The poetry in  Marilyn Nelson's 1997 National Book Award Finalist collection of new and selected poems, The Fields of Praise (Louisiana State Press, $16.95) varies richly in both subject matter and technique. In section I, "Mama and Daddy," Nelson recounts in conversational poems, poignant, engaging stories of her parents and what they gave her. Her father "was a navigator on B-52s. His crew was a lot like the crew of the bomber in Dr. Strangelove (1964) in which James Earl Jones plays the part of the navigator." she writes in the notes on the poems. The Tuskegee Airmen poems, she says, are true: "These men,/these proud black men;/our first to touch/their fingers to the sky." Except for their short lines, many of the poems in this section read like prose. The riveting stories contain racial tensions of WWII - harsh, blatant prejudices to be confronted.
The movement of the book from informal to formal poems, and from homey to rather sublime subject matter gives a sense of the progress of an individual life as it matures.
By the third section of the book, Nelson's poems are "inspired by Giotto's frescoes about the life of St. Francis," Mary's "Magnificat," "the Book of Jonah," and Saint John of the Cross. In her notes detailing these poems, she adds, "No, I am not Catholic."

Sixty-five years after Curt Carlson's Gold Bond Stamp Co. began building ongoing relationships with consumers, his daughter and heir at Carlson Companies Inc. says the most successful marketers are those who realize the value of establishing a connection with customers. Marilyn Carlson Nelson, CEO of Carlson Cos., told an audience of about 400 attending a Carlson School of Management's First Tuesday luncheon that the rise of marketing and consumer research has had made it more possible than ever to know customers' preferences. The most savvy businesses are those using that information to boost their "customer share" the value of goods and services they sell to each consumer.

BLESSING THE BOATS
By Marilyn Nelson Waniek
Abba Jacob said:
Did I ever tell you about the time
I was asked to bless the fishing boats?
I got to the appointed beach at the appointed time,
in my long white tunic, of course, and discovered
the beach had been taken over by a crowd
of Italian tourists, most of them women, and topless.
Luckilyor unluckily for me,
considering the circumstancesthey were all beautiful. One or two of them... Well, what could I do? I just walked through them. They parted before me like the waves of the Red Sea, silent and watching. It was almost all I could do to keep a straight face and look straight ahead. I thought such a fancy-dressed audience deserved a grand gesture, so I walked right in, shoes and all, to my chest in the sea. Inwardly bursting with laughter, I stroked the nearest prow and blessed the boats with the sign of the Cross. Then I turned and blessed the beach. I didn't laugh until I got home. They're probably still talking about it.

These prints reveal memories from childhood of growing up within the culture of the Navy. These memories are not only personal, but are shared by many of the millions of children who grew up within service-families. The military constitutes a separate and distinctly different subculture from civilian America. It exercises a powerful shaping influence on the children of its personnel requiring a lifestyle that is unique, intense, demanding, and dominated by rules and values. Navy signalmen transmit messages by hoisting an alphabet flag or a series of flags on a halyard. Each flag when hoisted singly communicates an individual message unique to that flag.

Marilyn Carlson Nelson: Travel Titan
When MARILYN CARLSON NELSON, CEO of Carlson Cos., took over the family business last March, she inherited an empire that had been ruled by her demanding and domineering father for six decades. Curtis Carlson, who still has 100% voting control of the company, hasn't always agreed with her point of view, but this year Nelson has used a mixture of brains and charm to keep dad satisfied and make the corner office her own. Under Nelson, 58, Minneapolis-based Carlson has launched a series of acquisitions and joint ventures, increasing the company's worldwide travel-agency business by 200%. And Nelson, who has overseen corporate expansion since 1996, has built a remarkably loyal employee base at the privately owned $7 billion company. A dynamic and inspirational speaker, she has liberalized benefits, instituted day-care and profit-sharing plans, sometimes over her father's objections, and brought in important managers from outside the company. Nelson's biggest coup this year was merging with Britian's Thomas Cook Group, and combining with its 450 travel offices in the United Kingdom and its small British airline. A French speaker who studied at the Sorbonne, in Paris, Nelson has easily expanded operations in Europe. But her empire-building hasn't stopped there. She's commissioning luxury cruise ships and expanding the company's hotel franchises, including its Radisson Hotels. She's also trying to prepare son Curtis Nelson to take over the company someday.

These men, these proud black men:

Die Schwarzen Vogelmenschen.
They called themselves The Spookwaffe.
Sitting at attention for lectures about ailerons, airspeed, altimeters
Oh, there were parties, cadet-dances, guest appearances by the Count and the lovely Lena. There was the embarrassing adulation of Negro civilians. A woman approached my father in a bar where he was drinking with his buddies. Hello, Airman. She held out her palm. Will you tell me my future? There was that, like a breath of pure oxygen. But first they had to earn wings. There was this one instructor who was pretty nice. I mean, we just sat around and talked when a flight had gone well.

In 1896, he was invited by Booker T. Washington to head the agricultural department at the all-black-staffed Tuskegee Institute. There he conducted innovative research to find uses for crops such as cowpeas, sweet potatoes, and peanuts, while seeking solutions to the plight of landless black farmers.

Five daughters, in the slant light on the porch,
are bickering. The eldest has come home
with new truths she can hardly wait to teach.
She lectures them: the younger daughters search
the sky, elbow each others' ribs, and groan.

    Travel industry shedding excess baggage
The nation's travel industry has reacted to a drop in corporate and leisure travel by aggressively cutting costs, the chief executive of one of the world's largest hotel operators said Boston College's Chief Executives Club. The privately held Carlson Companiess operates hotels, resorts and restaurants under the Radisson, Regent, Park Plaza and T.G.I Friday's flags in 140 countries. Its units employ about 190,000 people, including about 10,000 in Massachusetts, and boast sales totaling $ 19 billion. She said Carlson Cos. and the travel industry have reacted to big drops in both leisure and corporate travel by slashing costs. "We are just intensely focusing on this as a matter of short-term survival," she said. "We have to get costs down. We're taking very dramatic costs out." She said if travel stops in the event of war, the industry should look at it as a "hiatus" - a time to reinvest and implement more efficient operations. "We have to get through that, and not everyone will," she said. Nelson said some travel units within her company are being called on by travelers to find safer destinations and make travel easier.
