Marilyn Nelson Named State Poet Laureate
The Connecticut Commission on the Arts announced that it has named Marilyn Nelson, of Storrs, as Poet Laureate for the State of Connecticut.
Nelson was recommended to the Commission by a panel of five distinguished literary professionals who considered several dozen nominations of poets submitted by the public. She will serve a five-year term in the honorary position, which was created by the General Assembly to recognize a Connecticut poet of the highest distinction. She succeeds Leo Connellan, who passed away in February, two months shy of completing his term, and his predecessor, James Merrill. Marilyn Nelson is the author of six books of poetry, two children's collections, and several chapbooks. Her work has also appeared in numerous anthologies and literary collections. She has been described as "a poet of stunning power, able to bring alive the most rarified and subtle of experiences." "Marilyn Nelson's presence in Connecticut has greatly enriched the state," said Susan Holmes, Artistic Programs Director at the University of Connecticut, who nominated Nelson for Poet Laureate. "She is a vital American voice speaking of our past and present from her multiple perspectives of daughter, mother, wife, artist, teacher, friend and African-American. Her teaching and support of young writers has been exceptional, and her readings of her work are not only wonderfully entertaining, but memorable and inspiring."

Juran Center for Leadership in Quality
Concluding Remarks, Marilyn Carlson Nelson
Question and Answer Session with Dr. Joseph M. Juran Is that okay? Yes.
Almost in answer, Dr. Wood and Dr. Rupp stood up and reminded us once again that even in the smallest, simplest application in a single hospital, it was a matter of life and death, saving lives by applying these principles. Next, Jim McNerney, who is reinventing a corporation and moving 3M back into its quality leadership role by implication, reminded us that perhaps quality has to do with the life, death and viability, long-term viability, of corporations. Dr. Beer challenged us to think of leadership responsibility in managing the interaction between the parts and a broader view of the system, and, of course, in the training of the individuals who are going to manage the individual units. Dr. Juran, will you take some questions from the audience, please?

Intellektuelle Opposition

Learning the art of leading people
    Marilyn Carlson Nelson
True leadership is not about prestige, power or status, says Marilyn Carlson Nelson. It is about personal responsibility and personal engagement. Leading people in a fast-changing business world is no longer about command and control. It is about collaboration and community
The ancients, gazing at the stars, often saw very different things. Some looked skywards and saw only random points of light. Others detected in the firmament faint but recognizable outlines of objects, animals and heroes.
Then, as now, gifted leaders need to discern patterns and shapes amidst the chaos, and interpret them in a way that illuminates and inspires others. This ability is at the heart of the concept of integrated leadership.
We are living in the most information-rich, instantaneous, borderless time in the world’s history. And it is predicted that the rate of change over the next 25 years will be four times what it is today.
The world – its peoples, its governments, its markets – and its problems are becoming increasingly complex and interactive. Effective leadership requires a more integrated approach than ever before.
Robert Joss, dean of Stanford Graduate School of Business, says: “Leadership is taking complete responsibility for an organization’s wellbeing and growth, and changing it for the better. Real leadership is not about prestige, power or status. It’s about responsibility.”
