Marilyn Nelson and an honorary doctorate from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. Her poetry books, all of which were published by the Louisiana State University Press, include: The Fields of Praise: New and Selected Poems The Homeplace (1985); and For the Body Marilyn was named Poet Laureate of Connecticut in June, 2001. Other honors include two Pushcart prizes, two creative writing fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Fulbright Teaching Fellowship,the 1990 Connecticut Arts Award, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Marilyn Carlson Nelson Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Carlson Companies, Inc. In her role as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Marilyn is responsible for the day-to-day operations of one of the largest privately held companies in the world. Marilyn Nelson
March 1999 Marilyn Nelson graduated from the University of California, Davis and holds postgraduate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania (M.A.) and the University of Minnesota (Ph.D.). Her books are For the Body The Homeplace Magnificat (1994), and The Fields of Praise: New and Selected Poems The Homeplace was a finalist for the 1991 National Book Award and won the 1992 Annisfield Wolf Award. The Fields of Praise was a finalist for the 1997 National Book Award, the PEN/Winship Award, and the 1998 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize, and won the 1998 Poets Prize. Her most recent work, a rendition of Euripides’ play, "Hecuba," appears in Euripides I , the first volume of the Penn Greek Drama Series, and was produced in November, 1998, by the African Continuum Theatre of Washington, D.C., directed by Jennifer Nelson. Marilyn Nelson's Labyrinth
The Internet strikes me as the realization of Jorge Luis Borges' vision : a garden of forking paths, an infinitely expanding library, a world-sized map of the world, a labyrinth . I hope you enjoy wandering around in my little section of it. (I hope the tiger doesn't get you!) I teach in the English Department at the University of Connecticut . My regular courses are creative writing (poetry), a poetry genre course, Aframerican and American Ethnic Literature. In Spring, 2000, I taught a course on Poetry and Meditation at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. I write poems. My third book won the Annisfield-Wolf Award and was a finalist for the National Book Award; my fifth book was a finalist for the National Book Award, the PEN/Winship Award, and the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize, and won the 1999 Poets' Prize; my sixth book, Carver: A Life in Poems (click on my name), publis hed by Front Street Books, won the Boston Globe/Hornbook Award, was a finalist for the National Book Award, was a Newbery Honor Book, a Coretta Scott King Honor book, and won the Flora Stieglitz Straus Award. In 2002 I became the Poet Laureate of the State of Connecticut.

Connecticut State Poet Laureate
The Connecticut Commission on the Arts announced that it has named Marilyn Nelson, of Storrs, as Poet Laureate for the State of Connecticut. Nelson was recommended to the Commission by a panel of five distinguished literary professionals who considered several dozen nominations of poets submitted by the public. She will serve a five-year term in the honorary position, which was created by the General Assembly to recognize a Connecticut poet of the highest distinction. She succeeds Leo Connellan, who passed away in February, two months shy of completing his term, and his predecessor, James Merrill.
The Homeplace , was a finalist for the 1991 National Book Award and won the 1992 Annisfield-Wolf Award. The Fields of Praise: New and Selected Poems Carver: A Life in Poems,
The selection panel that recommended Nelson to the Commission on the Arts was comprised of Kevin Carey, a poet, member of the Board of the Connecticut Poetry Society, and editor of the Connecticut River Review; Kristin Nord, a freelance writer and poetry instructor at Western Connecticut State University; Tom Radko, Director of Wesleyan University Press; Bessy Reyna, a poet, columnist for the Hartford Courant and arts editor of El Extra News; and Steve Straight, Director of the Connecticut Poetry Circuit and professor of English at Manchester Community College.
