Thomas Nashe, a Cambridge graduate, was a versatile writer of controversial pamphlets, satires, plays, a novel, and lyric verse. He was one of the so-called University Wits who in the late 1580's came to London and wrote for the stage and the press. They lived short and precarious lives: Nashe was about thirty-three when he died, his friend Christopher Marlow did at twenty-nine; George Peele, at thirty, and Robert Greene, at thirty-two. Nashe's polemical enemy was an older man, Gabriel Harvey, Spencer's friend; Nashe exchanged a series of vituperative and slanderous pamphlets with Harvey in which Nashe's talent for invective and mockery was exploited to the fullest. In june 1599, the ecclesiastical authorities ordered that "all Nashe's books and Doctor Harvey's books be taken wheresoever they may be found and that non of their books be ever printed hereafter".

    Thomas Nashe
Thomas Nashe (November ) was an English Elizabethan pamphleteer, poet and satirist. Son of William Nash a minister and Margaret his wife. Baptized in Lowestoft Suffolk . The family moved to West Harling, near Thetford in . Around Thomas went up to St John's College, Cambridge gaining his bachelor's degree in . Then he moved to London and started his literary career. It does not appear that Nash ever proceeded Master of Arts at Cambridge, and most of his biographers agree that he left his college about 1587. It is evident, however, that he had got into disgrace, and probably was expelled; for the author of "England to her three Daughters" in "Polimanteia," 1595, speaking of Harvey and Nash, and the pending quarrel between them, uses these terms: "Cambridge make thy two children friends: thou hast been unkind to the one to wean him before his time , and too fond upon the other to keep him so long without preferment: the one is ancient and of much reading; the other is young, but full of wit." The cause of his disgrace is reported to have been the share he took in a piece called "Terminus et non Terminus," not now extant; and it is not denied that his partner in this offence was expelled. Most likely, therefore, Nash suffered the same punishment. If Nash be the author of "An Almond for a Parrot," of which there is little doubt, although his name is not affixed to it, he travelled in Italy; and we find from another of his pieces that he had been in Ireland. Perhaps he went abroad soon after he abandoned Cambridge, and before he settled in London and became an author. His first appearance in this character seems to have been in

    The Unfortunate Traveller
Doohyun Park, Doctoral Candidate, English The Unfortunate Traveller qualities Nashe's ideological responses to contemporary authority and epistemology and his ideological discourses are presented in the first part. The first part of the book mainly highlights the sharp ideological conflict between Jack and Surrey. The difference between Surrey's idealistic Petrarchanism and Jack's realistically chameleonic narrative shows how the text reveals the breakdown of the old order and its participation in the resulting heterogeneous ideological turomoil of the Elizabethan age. The breakdown of the social order and ideals leads to linguistic instability, which means that Nashe's language calls social stability and a well-ordered world into question. Just as Althusser said that it is in ideology that human beings become conscious of their place in the world, so Surrey is placed and positioned in the society through such ideology as an idealistic humanist as seen by his Platonic love for Geraldine and his Petrarchan sonnet; on the contrary, Jack becomes conscious of himself as a radical realist as seen in his practical critique of the Anabaptists. In other words, ideology enables them to identify their beings as idealist (Surrey) and radical (Jack). Their expressions expose, in the Althusserian term, the imaginary relation, a relation that expresses a will (idealist or radical) rather than describing a reality.

His ardent anti-Puritanism involved him in the Martin Marprelate controversy , resulting in a scurrilous pamphlet battle with Richard and Gabriel Harvey in which Nashe produced some of his liveliest writing. The "University Wits"
A scholar writing. "Silentium" from Geoffrey Whitney, A Choice of Emblems The decade of the 1590s, just before Shakespeare started his career, saw a radical transformation in popular drama. A group of six feisty, well- educated men chose to write for the public stage, taking over native traditions. They brought new coherence in structure, and real wit and poetic power to the language. As the title of this page suggests, they are known collectively as the "University Wits," though they did not always work as a group, and indeed wrangled with each other at times. Click on the names below to read about each of the "university wits": [Notes]
    John Lyly (1554-1606)
Always on the fringe of the Court, Lyly never achieved the fame he sought. He is best known for his elaborate prose style, named after his moral prose romance, Euphues, the Anatomy of Wit, but he wrote several original comedies for the Court. His plays were performed by the child actors , the Children of the Chapel Royal, and the Paul's Boys.
