62. The Wall -- Viet Nam Memorial
Commentary on the emotional effects people experience at the Vietnam memorial, and the possible reasons for them.
http://www.dbs2000ad.com/narayan/the-wall-viet-nam-memorial.htm
The Wall Viet Nam Memorial
Ever wonder why the Viet Nam Memorial evokes such strong feelings from people? After all, it's just another war memorial, and not particularly esthetically pleasing or heroic in its presentation at that. Yet people are deeply moved when they are in its presence, and it has become a symbol of the transformation of all of humankind. The reason is actually quite simple and extremely profound. For it is the Memorial for the War That Ended War. That war was the most grotesque, pointless, hideously horrendous, endless and dreadfully catastrophic war in its impact of all time. All who were involved whether by being there or by totally re-channeling their life by not being there were irrevocably transformed for life. And it all ended so ignominiously on that rooftop with the escape helicopter and the dumping of war equipment overboard at sea. And for what? The war started shortly after World War II ended and it took some 25 years and untold human, ecological and economic disaster to find out that the whole thing was a ridiculous undertaking in the first place. It was an attempt to impose a patriarchal and Western way of life on a most unwilling Eastern culture, with cold war paranoia thrown in to really heat it up. Furthermore, it was happening in a "baby soul" area of the world read that as primitive psychology, unrestrained fear, and the willingness to use the most extreme of tactics without hesitation. On top of which, it was a terrain and culture most unsuited to western style warfare. But we persisted all the way to the bitter end with totally predictable results.

About 'R K Narayan : RK Narayan'

R K Narayan was an Indian novelist. His novels are characterised by chekhovian simplicity and gentle humour. Characters in his novels tend to be very down-to-earth. His novels are all set in an imaginary place called Malgudi which is a typical South Indian town.
His writing career began with Swami and His Friends[?] . At first, he could not get the novel published. He then sent a draft to Graham Greene , who liked it so much that he arranged for its publication. Greene was to remain a close friend of his. After that, he published a continuous stream of novels, all set in Malgudi and each dealing with different characters in that fictional place. Autobiographical content forms a significant part of some of his novels, for example, The English Teacher[?]
Most of his novels deal with the humdrum of everyday life. In fact, his work has sometimes been criticised for being excessively simplistic and for sometimes being cliched.

THIS SITE IS FOR NARAYANA GURU ABOUT GURUDEVAN GURU'S TEACHINGS RELATION WITH SNDPY NEW CONCEPT OF GURUDEVA DERSHNAS ABOUT GURUDEVAN Born as an ordinary child to near Trivandrum, Kerala, India. He lead a simple life. In his childhood he searched for God. During his teenage he left his house and went to Aruvipuram Hills. He met Chattampi Swamikal there. They together lead a saint life and one day he got "Darshana" and he came out from the forest. During this time the cast problems are in its utmost in India and in Kerala. Brahmins treated the others as bad as a dog. One Sivarathri day (day for Ancestors), he took a stone from the Aruvipuram river after a long prayer and placed on a stand near to the river and declared this was an idol of Siva, the ancient God in Hindu mythology. This was a revolutionary act because during those days only Brahmins are allowed to install the iodls of God. Again Guru delivered a revolutionary speech, "This temple is for all the human beings, irrespective of his Cast or Religion". During those days only Brahmins are allowed inside the temples. Slowly he became a central figure in Kerala. His popularity spread because of his famous words "One Cast, One Religion, One God". Even Gandhi and Tagore came to see Guru and talk with him. He spent his last time in Sivagiri, near Trivandrum, Kerala. He started an institution for Saints to spread the message of harmony among human beings. He started an organisation known as Sree Narayana Darma Paripalana Yogam (SNDPY)

R.K.Narayan's Association with Purswalkam Reminiscences The M.Ct.M.Muthiah Chettiar Higher Secondary School, which has a long history, is still functioning in the Purswalkam area. If I am not mistaken for talking about caste and community, I would like to put forth a view at this juncture. The Purswalkam area housed a number of Chettiar and Mudaliar families who did yeomen services to the Tamil community. R.M.Azhagappa Chettiar's residence can be seen even today. The Tamil magazine 'Kumudam' started by him is a major Tamil weekly today. Like any other place the Purswalkam area is a 'Cosmopolitan' locality. Talking about educational institutions there is yet another great educational institution in this area. About 151 years have rolled ever since the school was started. A printing press that was started along with it is still existing there. But the names that these institutions bear are not Tamil names. On the contrary they have very close links with modern Tamil. The educational institution is the Fabricious School. The printing press is the Jeegan Bald Printing Press. The history of Tamil printing commences from Jeegan Bald Viviliam. Copies of Tamil Dictionary, which was published in the 19th century, are available even today. An octogenarian slowly walks into the room of the Principal with the help of a walking stick.

75. Myth, Reality, And Characterization The Fiction Of R.K. Narayan
narayan, RK The Financial Expert. Mysore Indian Thought Publications, 1958. narayan, RKGods, Demons, And Others.Mysore Indian Thought Publications, 1967.
http://www.postcolonialweb.org/india/literature/rao2.html
Myth, Reality, and Characterization in the Fiction of R.K. Narayan
Dr. (Mrs) Jaya Lakshmi Rao V., Reader in English, Mrs. A.V.N. College, Visakhapatnam
R. K. Narayan often creates characters with whom one can identify spontaneously. Swami, Krishna and Chandran and Ramani or Suseela and Savitri or the unassuming Sastri and the innumerable minor characters are easily recognizable, because they are based on real life models. However, there are some of Narayan's characters who are quite different. For example, Margayya, the ambitious financier in The Financial Expert , Raju, the ostentatious guide in The Guide or Vasu , the rogue taxidermist in The Man-Eater of Malgudi , are extraordinary characters and yet convincing. One reason that these extraordinary characters appear convincing relates to the prominent element of the esoteric in these novels. The use of tales from the Hindu mythology, the teachings of the Bhagavadgita , and the austere religious practices and beliefs there ordained add strength to the fictional art of R.K. Narayan. Further more, these kinds of mythic allusion help the reader with a better understanding of that particular character and a deeper insight into human nature. It is in this context that Narayan's skilful use of myth makes reality more easily comprehensible. As Ian Milligan rightly says, novelists like Narayan "continually add to the richness of our human experience; they bring before us new topics, new characters, new attitudes" (2). The Financial Expert narrates the story of Margayya, a financier. As his name indicates he 'shows the way' for illiterate, poor peasants to draw loans from the bank and from each other. He conducts his business in front of the Central Cooperative Bank, under the shade of a banyan tree with his "tin box, a gray, discoloured, knobby affair", in which he carried his entire equipment consisting of an ink bottle, a pen, a blotter, a small red covered register and the most important of all, loan application forms. Despite warnings from the bank's secretary not to indulge in illegal possession of the application forms, Margayya continues with his financing. To him, "money alone is important in this world. Everything else will come to us naturally if we have money in our purse" (21). In his view "If money was absent men came near being beasts" (27).

New York: Viking, 1982. 8vo., pp. ix, 246; cream boards over cloth, lettered in green on spine; a fine copy in like dust jacket, inscribed by the author on the half-title: 'For Jim Rubin / in thanks for his presence / in Madras (without music) / Best wishes / R. K. Narayan / 16th March '82'. First American edition. Narayan's first collection of stories to be published in America, drawing upon several earlier volumes, as well as including nine new fictions - all centred around the microcosmic village of Malgudi. This, from the author's introduction: 'I have named this volume Malgudi Days in order to give it plausibly geographical status. I am often asked, "Where is Malgudi?" All I can say is that it is imaginary and not to be found on any map ... If I explain that Malgudi is a small town in South India I shall only be expressing a half-truth, for the characteristics of Malgudi seem to me universal.'
Jim Rubin, a Harvard-based musicologist, was a long-time friend of the author.

T.S. SATYAN

WHEN I was in college in the early 1940s, I used to spend my leisure hours in the reading room of the College Union, enthusiastically lapping up Indian and foreign newspapers and periodicals. I had already started contributing to The Illustrated Weekly of India. My father, a government doctor, often advised me to read The Hindu regularly. Like many others of his time he believed that it was the best way to improve one's English. But its editorials put me off. The part of the paper that interested me most was the Sunday column by R.K. Narayan. He would write an essay or story which made delightful reading. An obliging librarian let me cut Narayan's writings from old papers. I pasted them in my scrapbook and read them again and again. I was attracted to his writing because of the ease and simplicity of his style.
