The Mahabharata
The Ramayana
(Various Publishers) A book review by Danny Yee Indian novelist Narayan has produced accessible English translations of the Mahabharata and the Ramayana , the great Sanskrit epics. Drastic abridgment limits their scholarly use the entire Bhagavid Gita section of the Mahabharata , for example, is condensed into a couple of paragraphs but they preserve the central stories and characters. In the Mahabharata the five Pandava brothers (Yudhistira, Arjuna, Bhima, Nakula, and Sahadeva) struggle to obtain their inheritance, culminating in the great battle of Kurukshetra. The Ramayana centres on Rama, avatar of Vishnu, covering his marriage, the theft of his wife Sita by the demon-king Ravana, and the search and struggle to recover her. Both epics have a plethora of side stories, covering the adventures of the heroes in exile and the deeds of their supporters and opponents. The epics have been retold and reworked many times (Narayan's Ramayana is itself based on an eleventh century Tamil version by Kamban), but simple accessible versions have an important place. The

R. K. Narayan: The Guide: A Study Guide (1958)
Using this Guide List of other study guides R[asipuram] K[rishnaswamy] Narayan (b. 1906) is unusual among Indian authors writing in English in that he has stayed contentedly in his home country, venturing abroad only rarely. He rarely addresses political issues or tries to explore the cutting edge of fiction. He is a traditional teller of tales, a creator of realist fiction which is often gentle, humorous, and warm rather than hard-hitting or profound. Almost all of his writings are set in the fictional city of Malgudi, and are narrowly focused on the lives of relatively humble individuals, neither extremely poor nor very rich. The Guide is one of his most interesting books, which begins as a comic look at the life of a rogue, but evolves into something quite different. It should be noted that Narayan is not a devout Hindu, and has accused Westerners of wrongly supposing that all Indians are deeply spiritual beings; but it is also true that he was deeply impressed by some experiences he had with a medium after the sudden death of his young wife (described movingly in The English Teacher Narayan has stated that the incident of the reluctant holy man was based on a real event which he read about in the newspaper.

R. K. Narayan: a Profile
R. K. Narayan was born in Madras in 1906 and educated there and at Maharajah's College in Mysore . He has lived in India ever since, apart from his travels. Most of his work, starting from his first novel Swami and friends (1935) is set in the fictional town of Malgudi which at the same time captures everything Indian while having a unique identity of its own. After having read only a few of his books it is difficult to shake off the feeling that you have vicariously lived in this town. Malgudi is perhaps the single most endearing "character" R. K. Narayan has ever created. He has published numerous novels, five collections of short stories (A Horse and Two Goats, An Astrologer's Day Lawley Road Malgudi Days , and The Grandmother's Tale ), two travel books ( My Dateless Diary and The Emerald Route), four collections of essays (Next Sunday, Reluctant Guru, A Writer's Nightmare , and A Story-Teller's World ), a memoir ( My Days ), and some translations of Indian epics and myths (The Ramayana, The Mahabharata, and Gods, Demons and Others). In 1980

Malgudi Days
Malgudi Days is a collection of short stories involving incidents and experiences in the life of the people of this fictional city named Malguidi that remains central to all of Narayan's works. Once again, the stories are not meant to convey something overly profound or insightful but a mere narration of short-lived experiences that in themselves contribute to the realisation of the subtleties of Indian life. Malgudi, a small South Indian town provides the setting for almost all of Narayan's novels and short stories. Malgudi, of course, does not exist. It is for Narayan, just as Wessex is for Thomas Hardy or Yoknapatawpha for William Faulkner, an imaginary landscape inhabited by the unique characters of his stories. In Narayan's words himself: "Malgudi was an earth-shaking discovery for me, because I had no mind for facts and things like that, which would be necessary in writing about Malgudi or any real place. I first pictured not my town but just the railway station, which was a small platform with a Banyan tree, a station master, and two trains a day, one coming and one going. On Vijayadasami I sat down and wrote the first sentence about my town: The train had just arrived in Malgudi Station. " In the words of A. Hariprasanna: "Narayan creates his fictional world of Malgudi as an essentially Indian society or town. The Indian-ness and Indian sensibility pervaded the whole place. Narayan's Malgudi is also a microcosm of India. It grows and develops and expands and changes, and is full of humanity, drawing its sustenance from the human drama and is enacted in it."

Narayan, R. K. (Rasipuram Krishnaswami) An Astrologer's Day
Genre Short Story Keywords Alternative Medicine Asian Experience Homicide Narrative as Method ... Suffering Summary An astrologer and palm-reader is about to close up shop for the day. He tries to induce one last client to buy his services. The man initially resists, but then gives in. The astrologer then reads in the man's past that he had once been stabbed and left for dead in his village. The man had all this time been searching for his assailant. The astrologer reveals that the assailant had "died four months ago in a far-off town." The client is relieved and goes home. When the astrologer returns to his home, he tells his wife that once he had tried to kill a man. Commentary In this short story Narayan deals with the healing of memories. Magically, the astrologer himself was the man who once tried to kill the client. For both client and healer, "a great load is gone" after the mysterious encounter.

    R K Narayan
The Malgudi Man "I'd be quite happy if no more is claimed from me than being just a story-teller. Only the story matters, that is all." R.K. Narayan was famous the world over for his humourous and realistic novels. Remember the Malgudi Days, and that music Ta-na-na-na-na…starts playing in our head. Every one of Narayan's readers knows what Narayan-land is called: Malgudi described as small-town India like any other town with ordinary people, ordinary needs and simple life. Most of his works, starting from his first novel, 'Swami and His Friends' (1935) is set in the fictional town of Malgudi. Once the readers are in this village-town, our guide, the storyteller, awaits them and gets the reader so engrossed through his simple yet vivid description, that a few pages flipped, and one actually feels that one has been to Malgudi.
Born in Madras in 1906, R. K. Narayan had his initial education in Madras (Chennai) and later at the Maharaja's College in Mysore. He lived in Mysore, the place that had maximum influence on him and reflected in his novels till recently, before moving to Chennai where he took his last breath. R.K. Narayan died at a private hospital at Chennai in the early hours of Sunday 13th of May at the age of 95 and is survived by his brother, Mr. R.K. Laxman, the famous cartoonist of the 'common man' fame from the daily - Times of India, son-in-law C S Chandrasekharan and two grandchildren.
