82. Hooks, Nets & Time - A Novelette By Linda Nagata
But he soon finds out that the owner has other uses for the shark station An SF novelette by linda nagata. Hooks, Nets and Time a novelette by linda nagata

Hooks, Nets and Time
a novelette by Linda Nagata T he ocean ran through his dreams. The panting breath of the wavelets as they rose and fell against the pylons became his own breath, a slow, deep rhythm in his lungs that forced him to run. His footfalls reverberated against the black plastic photovoltaic field that doubled as a deck: a square track five kilometers long, encompassing the perimeter of the shark pen. Starlight glinted off the water; glistened in the film of sweat that coated his pumping arms. The rubber soles of his running shoes beat out an ancient cursorial rhythm, a telling vibration transmitted through the deck to the perforated steel walls of the shark pen and then to the coral foundations of the station some twelve fathoms below. Crippled Tiburon would be lurking there near the bottom, listening, measuring the vibrations in his ancient, clever mind, waiting for the hour when his fins had fully regrown and his strength was at once new...and old. A thin wail twisted through the humid night. Tiburon heard it in the depths and thrashed his powerful tail. The wail grew into a distant howl of terror. A faint splash.

Review by Eve Gordon
Linda Nagata presents a future Earth where nano technology is being perfected. These breakthroughs cause huge sociological waves when the cost of implementation collides with health care cost containment suporters and religious groups. The characters are well-developed and the world incredibly well thought out.

Instead of fleeing however, they intend travelling into the heart of Chenzeme territory in order to discover the why and who of their persecution. Their journey is a very long one, centuries in fact, but they are able to survive due to the use of cold sleep or ghosting. Most of the crew is able to download copies of themselves, ghosts, which can be left as free floating 'consciences' or made into new flesh if required. This book interested me so much at the start that I had made my mind up to read the first few books leading up to this one (The Bohr Maker, Tech-Heaven and Deception Well). By books end I thought differently. Not that the story wasn't enjoyable, it just took a little too long to deliver.

Memory Linda Nagata
Wonderful heroic fantasy, in a thin veil of 'hard SF'. I do not mean insult, although I know some people would take it so. I don't care, in speculative fiction, whether the unlikely powers are coherent with modern science or not: I care whether they're internally consistent. It helps if they don't provide too many deus ex machina or machina ex deus That brings us back to Memory ; there are divinities and avatars, illimitable wealth, insidious dangers, a wounded world and a mad goddess - a quest across lifetime and chasms - really, heroic fantasy. Slghtly Jack Vance , and as in much Vance, the world runs on something like science - in this case, nanotech sufficiently advanced to be indistinguishable from magic. Which is in its extravagances delightful, like the swoonier descriptive scenes from Yeats or Keats or Swineburne , but as with Vance's novels, the heroic quest is the better part. I liked lots of techniques in the writing. They probably have names I don't know: the reuse of terms common now for clever futuristic devices, in ways that only slowly become clear; in fact, the uses of the items themselves only slowly become clear. But, however nifty, the supertech doesn't suddenly appear to get over difficulties we had been led to think insuperable challenges to our heroine. On the contrary, the most impressive capabilities are usually described in the heat of the action as the devices finally prove insufficient to the adventure. And this, of course, is how we experience most real technology: by the time we're running it flat out we usually need more than it can do.
