She won the Nebula award The Nebula is an award given each year by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA), for the best science fiction stories published in the United States during the two previous years. (See rolling eligibility below.) There is no cash prize associated with the award, the award itself being a transparent block with an embedded glitter spiral nebula; however, publishers seldom fail to mention that a novel won the award, and as a mark of acclaim by other science fiction writers, it seems reasonable that the Nebula, like the Hugo award, leads to increased sales.

Bantam Spectra paperback - 403 pages
    From the back cover:
    Voyage into Night
Aboard Null Boundary, a giant starship thousands of years old, four survivors of an ancient alien war are making a desperate journey: Lot, son of a fiery prophet and carrier of an insidious virus that spreads a cult like religious mania among those it infects; Urban, Lot's boyhood friend from the city of Silk, and a man in search of challenge and adventure; Clemantine, cast adrift when her world was destroyed, and yearning for revenge; and Nikko, sometimes a living man, but always the ship's disembodied mind.
They are bound for unknown territory. Ahead of them loom vast, lightless clouds of dust and gas where stars are born, and where the alien Chenzeme are believed to live. The Chenzeme are an enigmatic race whose automated warships have ravaged the living worlds of the Galaxy's Orion arm for millions of years. But why? Null Boundary's crew is driven to find out - though in their quest to discover the source of the Chenzeme, they must also explore the terrible truth of their own past, the meaning of revenge, and the price each one of them is willing to pay for survival.

    357 pages, 1995, Bantam Spectra
Review score: *** out of ***** Science fiction is sometimes described as speculative fiction, since it allows the author and reader to explore ideas about the future. I read Linda Nagata's book Tech Heaven because it explores cryonics. Cryonics, as defined by the CryoCare Foundation is [...] an experimental procedure in which dying patients are preserved at ultra-low temperature for possible treatment in the distant future. Human cryopreservation is not reversible today. The practice of cryonics is thus based on the speculative possibility that advanced future technologies, such as nanotechnology, may be able to revive today's cryonics patients in a future era of rejuvenation and unlimited lifespans. For a hefty fee (ranging from around $50,000 for a "neuro patient", where just the head is frozen, to $120,000 for a "whole body patient"), CryoCare or another company, Alcor , will freeze a "patient" in liquid nitrogen when they are declared legally dead. The idea of cryogenically preserving a recently dead person until some time in the future when they can be resurrected has been around since 1964, when it was proposed by

    Limit of Vision
    by Linda Nagata
(Tor Books, $6.99, paperback, 352 pages, first published 2001, this edition, 1 July 2002; ISBN: 0765342111.)
Linda Nagata is possessed of a wild speculative imagination. She sees beyond cutting-edge science to the social and personal implications of its possible applications. Her prose successfully combines understated elegance and neologistic flair. Nevertheless, Limit of Vision , her fifth novel, fails to fulfill the promise of these qualities. Sadly, this promising tale collapses under the weight of too many unanswered questions. How did Ky Xuan Nguyen succeed in negotiating the LOV protectorate? How did the three scientists smuggle the LOVs to Earth? And what inspired them to do so? What are the details of the event that first caused world authorities to be so strict and paranoid about artificial life? While Limit of Vision is, at first, an exciting read, by the end, the vagueness of such important plot points nags to irritating distraction.

Vast by Linda Nagata (Bantam Spectra, $5.99, 403 pages, paperback; published August 1998.) There's one big problem with writing about space travel. Either you ask your readers to buy into all those convenient wormholes just waiting to take the characters where they need to go, like some intergalactic underground. Or else you and the readers have to accept that travelling from A-B is going to take a mind-numbing number of years, never mind travelling from A-Z which is going to take more centuries than anyone wants to read about. With Vast , Linda Nagata goes the long-haul route that says, Hey, travel is mind-numbing and my characters are all stuck in a spaceship that's long, thin and none too pleasant - and they'd better learn to live with it because the alternative is they go mad, if they haven't already. In fact, Vast is like nothing so much as Das Boot in space. The author also assumes a certain amount of previous knowledge of the characters; with the action continuing on from where Deception Well ended... 'Ex-human' Lot - still infected by the Cult virus - is travelling aboard a thousands-of-years-old organic space ship the Null Boundary. Lot and those with him are in search of the truth about the Chenzeme, an ancient, maybe already dead, mutated or evolved alien race who - millions of years back - fashioned hunter/killer spaceships programmed to destroy any sentient race they meet.
