We bought Amish quilts
in Kalona. Or, I bought two.
You hung back, approving, but disinclined by nature to purchase cotton and twill oddments, stars and hexagons. Yet you did. And paid with a rare optimism: a love poem. It turns out I was the one who did not believe. When an ecstatic life is taken apart then re-stitched in increments, it comes to resemble bad faith, a set of troubled assumptions. My daughter sleeps under mine. And you, who are nowhere now but in the charged air, you saw it first, pointed out to me in love the one bright yellow square, uncanny, unfaded in the dim one hundred-year-old field. Carol Muske (Carol Muske Dukes in fiction) has two new books appearing this year Women and Poetry: Truth, Autobiography, and the Shape of the Self ; and An Octave Above Thunder: New and Selected Poems , due in October.

MiPo esias Staff Reviewer I n the myth of Orpheus, the archetypal Greek poet-hero voyages to the underworld to retrieve his dead wife, Eurydice. The guardians of the underworld allow him to return her to earth only so long as she walks behind him the whole way up and he does not look back at her. At the threshold of Hades and Terra, however, he forgets this injunction, glances behind, and she is gone. Orpheus can only return to earth with this image of his beloved. It is tinted with guilt since it was purchased at the price of her not returning. But he has gone under, and he has come back up, with something real, if only an image, from the liminal space between life and death. Likewise, Carol Muske-Dukes returns from her journey into the trying and dangerous psychological terrain of grief with the images which fill Sparrow a set of elegies dedicated to her husband, David Dukes, who died on October 9, 2000.

Life After Death by Carol Muske-Dukes "Why don't you just die?" Boyd Schaeffer asks her husband, Russell, one night during a fight.
The next day, he does just that. Russell was rich, sensitive, charming, but always unreliable and it is not clear to Boyd what emotional legacy his untimely death has bequeathed her.

    Parochial punks, trimmers, nice people,
    joiners true-blue,
Get the hell out of the way of the laurel. It is deathless
    And it isn't for you.
Louise Bogan, "Several Voices Out of a Cloud" Harold Bloom's complaints about widespread aesthetic impoverishment are familiar and unlike Louise Bogan's observations, reiterative. We listened to a similar jeremiad when he opened his heaven's gates to his canonical elect-in the introduction to The Western Canon . He reproduces much of that sermon here as he ostensibly reviews the last ten years of The Best American Poetry and its sins. Without pointing a finger directly at her, he indicts the editor of the 1996 volume, Adrienne Rich. He heaps coals on her head for sins against Aesthetic Purity, namely for choosing poems that he says reflect "the race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origin and political purpose of the would-be poet." The faithful grow weary of this thundering from the pulpit. For there are still "faithful," those of us who believe in progressive politics and aesthetics. Who are moved by Bloom's passionate and poetry-loving persona, his pained and occasionally profound cries about what has been lost, yet think Adrienne Rich has the right to experiment, to "open up" our notions of what a poem might be-as she says, against some "apartheid of the imagination."

Boyd was just a step away from becoming an obstetrician-gynecologist when her career was derailed by two people: the charming, wealthy, and mercurial Russell and a mother of three who died while intern Boyd performed an abortion. Her death is not Boyd’s fault, but it prompts her to abandon her career and marry Russell, with whom she has a daughter, Freddy. Her life would be idyllic, except for the regret and the anger. One night Russell so enrages Boyd that she tells him to die, and he does. Boyd goes into shock: more guilt, another ghost. Meanwhile her elegant mother-in-law has her own transgressions to cope with, and four-year-old Freddy convinces herself that she can liberate her daddy from his underground abode. Boyd finds herself drawn to Will, who gave up his dream of being an architect to run his family’s St. Paul mortuary and who is also haunted by his dead. These are the parameters within which Muske-Dukes, an astute and poetic novelist, works her magic. As in Saving St. Germ

38. Ace Boggess Reviews SPARROW By Carol Muske-Dukes

Sparrow by Carol Muske-Dukes Random House, 2003 (ISBN 0375509267)
The death of a loved one can be a hard part of any person's life, but for someone with a poet's temperament it can stir up much beyond mere memory. Poets sometimes have the most wonderful melancholy, digging in the muck of their sadness to uncover seeds, lost trinkets, buried treasure. They find beautiful language in the ugliness of death. They discover a few surprising insights into the human condition, while forcing themselves to seek a sense of hope. That is to say, poets craft elegies like monuments for their loved/lost. In a sense, that is what Carol Muske-Dukes achieves with her newest book, Sparrow . One might easily view the entire volume of poems as one gargantuan elegy for her late husband. The poems here touch on his sickness and passing, but also on his life, and her life with him. They revel in what was important, moving, powerful. But at the same time, they pause to pay attention to the trivial, not allowing anything to slip away unnoticed.
On my study floor, the books were piled high.

Though for years an admirer of her tough-minded, elegant lyricism, I admit that when I first picked up Carol Muske-Dukes' newest collection of poems Sparrow , a book-length elegy for her late husband, the actor David DukesI was wary. The title seemed, well, slight for such weighty subject matter, and I didn't relish the prospect of page after page of personal grief for a man whose life I knew of incidentally at best. My initial skepticism, however, was quickly and irrevocably disarmedno small measure of the book's carefully staged, quietly devastating effect. While it is deeply personal, Sparrow is also an intricate marriage of dramatic and lyric voices, grief so acutely rendered it prefigures centuries of love and loss. Strangely enough, "prefigures" is the word of choice, though David Dukesstar of stage and screen (notably, Dawson's Creek ) and widely known for having played the man who raped Edith Bunkerdied in October 2000 while filming the TV movie Rose Red just down the highway in Lakewood, Washington. He was playing tennis, and suffered a heart attack. Carol Muske-Dukes, who is also a novelist, was in Los Angeles working on her third novel
