Many of Murdoch's twenty-six novels present the horrors of modern egomania, so given the chance she may not have enjoyed all the attention that her life has received since her death in 1999: her husband, John Bayley's, Elegy for Iris and Iris and her Friends ; Peter Conradi's authorized biography, Iris Murdoch ; and the Oscar-nominated movie

IRIS MURDOCH ON THE GOOD, GOD AND RELIGION
Joseph Malikail
1. INTRODUCTION Among the philosophers and novelists of the last half-century, Iris Murdoch is remarkable for her preoccupation with the conception of morality or the vision of the Platonic Form of the Good; her novels depict characters in different versions and degrees of moral goodness, plausible in a contemporary setting. That preoccupation is the subject of this paper. Murdoch is a moral realist. Moral realists, whatever their differences, hold in common that there are moral truths which we are capable of recognizing and which are there for us to recognize; their existence does not depend upon our recognition of them. In a 1956 paper, "Dreams and Self- Knowledge" (ie. "Vision and Choice in Morality", Conradi 1997, 92, 95-96), she discussed the ontology of moral Goodness. How should the idea of moral Good be conceived? She stood on the side of Vision against Choice. Juxtaposition of the terms was intended to clarify her Platonic (Evans 1993, 35) perspective of post-Kantian moral philosophy, and focus a critique, positive and negative, of positions held by G.E. Moore, and of the various blends of Kantianism, utilitarianism, behaviourism and existentialism prevalent among her language-analyst contemporaries. According to Murdoch, G.E. Moore has had a major impact on ethical discourse in the century. He was one of the "Cambridge Apostles", of a generation previous to hers. The members were consistently

My First Experience and a Word of Introduction
How can you trust the prefaces nowadays? If you have heard this or that about Murdoch, there are a few ways to enquire about the author. One of them is by experience . Namely: having read the short descriptions at the back covers, having browsed long enough to read random passages and an occasional preface, you decide to buy one or two volumes to check for yourself, given that the books seemed to be interesting per se , and also given that the prefaces were encouraging. Yet still you may fail into the trap and waste your money and time. A. S. Byatt provided a glorifying preface to The Bell , where she also praised A Fairly Honourable Defeat Be warned ! This is hardcore stuff. Read at your own risk. Or, even better, do not read at all.

  • Existentialists and Mystics: Writings on Philosophy and Literature 1919- ), British writer and philosopher, born in Dublin, Ireland. Murdoch's first published book, Sartre, Romantic Rationalist (1953), is a study of French existentialism. She began a career as a writer of fiction with Under the Net (1954). With her adaptation of her novel A Severed Head (1961; play, written with J.B. Priestley, 1963), she also became a dramatist. Her style is complex, combining naturalism and the macabre, the familiar and the magical. Regarded as a master stylist, she presents in her fiction a cast of characters who struggle with the discovery that they are not truly free but are fettered by themselves, society, and natural forces. Perhaps when distant people on other planets pick up some wave-length of ours all they hear is a continuous scream. I daresay anything can be made holy by being sincerely worshipped.

I never wanted to be a writer. I loved words, but I was not a word-user, rather a word-watcher, in the way that some people are bird-watchers. I loved languages but I knew by now that I would never speak the languages that I read. I was one for whom the spoken and the written word are themselves different languages.

    "The Philosopher's Pupil"
(Reviewed by Judi Clark FEB 10 1998) This book was passed on to me by a British couple (on a beautiful catamaran) whom we met while moored in Ft. Lauderdale. As they put it, I couldn't consider myself a well read individual if I'd never even heard of Iris Murdoch, never mind, read any of her work. Those Brits sure have a way with words.

Although marred by some irritating quirks, including a bizarre series of extraneous hostile references to Oxford classicist Maurice Bowra, Conradi’s narrative retains interest throughout. Unfortunately, Murdoch’s apparently inexhaustible capacity to inspire passionate attachment combines with Conradi’s penchant for piling on marginally relevant detail to leave us in hopeless confusion by the time the budding author graduates from Oxford. A moment of unintentional hilarity is achieved when Conradi interrupts his Homeric catalogue of those who fell under Murdoch’s spell to announce that “in the interests of clarity, this biography presents a few strands only” of its subject’s Byzantine entanglements. Conradi industriously shines his professorial light into some hitherto ill-illuminated corners of Murdoch’s life. Particularly revelatory is his account of her scarring liaison with future Nobel laureate Elias Canetti, who, Conradi persuasively argues, is the model for the charismatically tyrannical “enchanter” figures that dominate many of her novels. Conradi bristles with indignation at the “Svengali-like” manner in which Canetti treated Murdoch and is often unable to keep himself from descending into
